1 WHAT IS FIBER OPTICS TECHNOLOGY? Fiber Optics is a technology that uses glass threads (fibers) to transmit data. Fiber-optic communications is based on the principle that light carried through glass can carry more information over longer distances then copper wire. 200 Fiber strands each one smaller than a human hair, and a bundle the size of a pencil, could carry the entire worldwide Internet traffic. 2 FIBER OPTIC HISTORY 1880 Alexander Graham Bell patented an optical telephone system PhotoPhone Never materialized his original phone was more practical 1970 Corning Glass invented fiber optic wire 1977 GTE deployed the world s 1 st live telephone traffic thru a fiber optic system in Long Beach, CA Today about 90% of the world s long distance voice and data traffic is carried over fiber optic. Every Year about 180 million miles of fiber optic cable are laid worldwide
3 BANDWIDTH Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be carried from one point to another over a given period of time. So higher bandwidth means the system has more capability to carry data over a shorter period of time. Bandwidth is measured in bits per second (bps) 1 bit per second (bps) Low Bandwidth Megabit per second = 1 million bits per second (Mbps) Gigabit per second = 1 Billion bits per second (Gbps) High Bandwidth
4 BANDWIDTH COMPARISONS When making comparisons in bandwidth, relating it to the size of a transmission pipe is an easy way to visualize the differences Phone (DSL) 640 Kbps Wireless 20 Mbps Fiber Optics 1 2 Gbps Fiber Community 100Mbps Cable Modem 160Mbps
5 WHAT IS FIBER TO THE HOME? Fiber to the home (FTTH) is the delivery of a communications signal over optical fiber from the service provider to a home. Why are Fiber and FTTH important? Fiber optic cable connected to the home network enables enormous improvements in bandwidth, thereby enabling greater capability in video, internet and phone services. Current fiber optic technology can provide transmission speeds of up to 1Gbps in residential applications. Traditional Cable suppliers are reaching the limit of speed with their technology. However, bandwidth will continue to increase over time using the existing fiber network.
6 CURRENT HYBRID FIBER COAXIAL IMPLEMENTATION Broadcasting Centers Optical Converter/Node Central Office Fiber Ring Hub Homes Comcast Bonita Springs Outside the home the signal is carried from the providers central office to the neighborhood over Fiber Optic Cable At that point it is converted from optical to electrical signals and carried to each individual home over Coaxial Cables Inside of home the signal is split in the closet box and carried to each TV outlet and Modem/Router
7 FTTH IMPLEMENTATION Broadcasting Centers ONT Inside of home the signal is converted from light to electrical signals by the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) From that point it is carried to each device in the home Outside the home the signal is carried from the providers central office to the neighborhood. From that point it is split and carried to each individual home ONT
