7 A1. Sound theoretical approach, exploiting emerging technologies I was the technical lead for the first devolved update to Part L1A in Wales. Analysis and reporting of field trials testing the in situ performance of small scale CHP for the Carbon Trust and Condensing Boilers for the Energy Saving Trust over a period of 5 years. Numerous feasibility assessments, from small exemplar infill sites of 8 homes and central London office blocks to masterplans of 2500 homes. Sizing of plant, taking account of load diversity, calculation of energy and carbon savings, review of maturity of technologies. Technologies reviewed: CHP, mchp, biomass boilers, biomass CHP, ground and air sourced heat pumps, building integrated wind turbines, photovoltaics, solar thermal, flue gas heat recovery, waste water heat recovery.

Creative and innovative development of engineering technology, continuous improvement of systems Technology Strategy Board (TSB) Design for Future Climate Residential New Build I was part of the team considering the impact of future climate on homes proposed for the regeneration of a London Housing Estate. I reviewed and agreed the input assumptions for gains to residential and communal spaces prior to modelling carried out in IES and then interpreted, iterated and reported the results. Key issues were overheating in communal spaces and delivering sufficient volume of of secure night time ventilation.

Identify potential projects and opportunities Housing Developer Consultant Framework I drew on relationships formed through participation in industry working groups to give a series of presentations to senior management a housing developer The outcome of this business development activity was a place on their energy strategy framework I took the lead in reviewing the framework contract, liaising with our legal team and negotiating agreed contract terms between AECOM and the Housing Developer.

10 B2 Research Design and Development Condensing Boiler Field Trials I carried out data analysis and reporting on 60 boilers monitored over ~3 years to assess in situ performance of domestic condensing boilers A follow on study (18 months) assessed the use of Time-Proportional Integral (TPI) controls in dwellings I developed an in depth understanding of the energy balance of boiler operation, factors influencing boiler performance, the operation of boiler controls and the benefits and drawbacks of hot water storage Outcome Findings incorporated into the 2009 revisions to SAP.

Implement design solutions and evaluate their effectiveness Investigating the Adequacy of Insulation in Homes in a London Borough Undertook comfort analysis Reviewed specification and SAPs, Interviewed residents, accessed loft to check insulation in ceiling and walls, Installed internal and external temperature monitoring. Risk assessments completed prior to each site visit Conclusions - Lack of comfort likely due to combinations of : perception of cold; large areas of glazing radiator sizing; expectation of quick heating response.

12 Estate Regeneration Masterplan Regeneration of London Housing Estate will ultimately deliver circa 2600 homes over 13 phases Competition energy and sustainability strategy and Phase 1 energy and sustainability strategy and MEP up to planning. Outline planning application for masterplan I won appointment for Energy, Sustainability, Infrastructure, Computer Modelling (daylight and microclimate), Air Quality, Geotechnical, Noise and Waste. Total contract value Our fee to support the planning application was Competition work commenced Outline Masterplan permission granted Completed in profit

13 C1. Plan for effective project implementation Estate Regeneration Masterplan After appointment I visited each discipline in their office. Establish face to face basis for relationship Agreed information required to commence, time to complete, contingency, delivery risk I fed our team requirements into the client s master programme.

14 C2. Plan, budget, organise, direct and control tasks, people and resources. Estate Regeneration Masterplan I circulated the agreed programme and requested confirmation of resource A week before the commencement I called the discipline leader to ensure they had resource in place and then later made contact to confirm that they had the information required I maintained regular contact with my team When some deadlines were missed by other members of the client team, I kept the client up to speed, advising on adjustments required to the programme and on the impact to our delivery dates. The job was completed in profit and to the client s satisfaction

15 C3 Staff management and technical development I have managed two consultants and one graduate within the Building Engineering Sustainability team. Monthly one to one meetings Feedback of high quality work, and of areas for improvement. Annual reviews and interim reviews, SMART goals and training. Look to develop people in the round both soft skills and technical skills. I mentor colleagues in SAP calculations and the associated building physics to develop their understanding of the cause and effect of services solutions on the energy consumption and carbon emissions of a dwelling developing a questioning mind.

Manage continuous quality improvement The core to AECOM s IMS is founded on our accreditation to: ISO 9001 Quality Management ISO14001 Environmental Management BS Safety Management I am given regular training to ensure competency in our IMS On a day to day basis I carry out regular project reviews and a final review, at project close, where profit, team and resource management and client and personal satisfaction are discussed.

Work with others and communicate Domestic Building Services Compliance guide 2010 Update Working with John Palmer I attended the working group meetings at took minutes and actions for AECOM and after checking circulated to the attendees. 19 D3. Demonstrate personal and social skills In my work I use a wide range of communication media including reports, presentations, briefing notes, face to face conversations, , and telephone. I am experienced in working and communicating with directors, partners, development managers, planners, architects, cost consultants, planning consultants, lawyers, local authorities, contractors and members of the public. I ve worked well within client teams - some very friendly, others with very demanding contractors I regularly present to a range of audiences from large conferences for Part L to smaller stakeholder groups such as residents associations (with examples of two such groups)

20 E1. Code and Rules of Conduct I have read and understood the CIBSE Code of Conduct My standard work processes and practises include health and safety checks and risk assessments. I am trained in business ethics and provided with regular refresher courses. Working on the Building Regulations I keep up to speed with relevant legislation from the UK and EU All calculations and reports are checked and approved by separate staff members prior to issue providing the necessary checks for quality and consistency of output.

Safe systems of work Investigating the Adequacy of Insulation in Homes in a London Borough As part of our IMS Risk assessments are required for any site visit Risk assessments completed prior to each site visit 2 members of staff always present, where possible council officer also present or in local area. I accompanied the thermography expert to ensure two personnel present and to gain learning

22 E3. Contribute to sustainable development The focus of my work is to integrate the principles of sustainability in materials and energy sources into engineering designs. I have worked on the development of regulations for energy efficiency for current and future buildings I am passionate about low energy design and enjoy the opportunities to influence design that involvement in pre planning concept design offers. When architectural designs are still fluid there is the potential to influence layout to improve the efficiency of services

23 E4. Continuing professional development Part of my annual review process includes the setting of annual SMART goals as well as longer term two year and five year goals. There is a 6 month interim review to check progress As an On Construction Domestic Energy Assessor (OCDEA) I maintain a continuous programme of CPD including attending conferences, reading regular technical updates, attending lunchtime CPDs arranged within our office. I share the position of committee member of the CIBSE Homes for the Future Group with a colleague. I regularly read: Building, CIBSE Journal, Green Building Magazine, Technical updates from National Energy Services

24 In Conclusion Why do I want to become a member? My Achievements I have had privilege to work for nine years for a truly multidisciplinary company. Working with and being mentored by some inspirational experts in their field - Steve Irving, Ant Wilson, Miles Attenborough. I am passionate about our early involvement in design work to integrate efficient services with architecture. My Goals To continue to play an active role in promoting low energy design and the application of innovative, new and existing technologies internally and with CIBSE Maintain expertise in low energy design To move forwards to the new challenge of taking forwards the sustainability and advanced design team in the north I wish to be a role model and mentor for my team supporting their goal of achieving chartership.
