Configure Always On mode (ADSL routers)

1 Introduction The most likely cause of the internet light going red, or off, on an ADSL router, is that Always On is not configured on the router. This is not part of the router's default configuration. Symptom If you are not using the internet for 30 minutes (1800 seconds) or more, you may see the internet light go red, or off (depending on make/model of router). This can give the appearance that the internet has dropped, or disconnected. What has actually happened is that the virtual path from the exchange equipment (DSLAM) to the internet has disconnected. Opening a web browser, and typing in a web page, will usually wake up the router, but if using wireless devices, this can sometimes cause the wireless connection to time out and disconnect. You can set your router to Always on to solve this, or in some older routers this may be referred to as a nailed up connection. Router login To do this work, you will need to log in to your router. To do this browse to your router at:- At the prompt:- Enter your admin username & password. Unless you have changed this, the default is normally:- Username : admin password : admin The following pages cover details on how to enable this for the following series of routers:- Huawei & some D-Link DSL 3780, but not HG635 super router D-Link DSL (but not the DSL-3780) D-Link DSL-3780 HG633 & HG635 routers Netgear Page 1 of 6 Date : 19/05/2015

2 Enable Always On Huawei & some D-Link DSL-3780 routers (not HG635 Super Router) Login to the router, then go into Advanced from the tab of the left. Then go to:- Basic > Wan Highlight the nas_0_38 interface:- Change Connection Trigger from OnDemand to AlwaysOn. This will remove the Idle Time option. Then click Submit to save the setting. 3 D-Link DSL (but not the DSL 3780) routers Login to the router & go into Advanced mode. Click on the Setup tab at the top & ADSL Setup down the left hand side. In the PPOE/PPOA Internet Connection Type section, change the Idle Time Out option from probably 30 minutes to 0 minutes. Note: if the idle timeout feature you mentioned doesn't allow a '0' anymore Enter the maximum amount of " " which is the equivalent of 356 days Then click the Save Settings button at the bottom of the page. 4 D-Link DSL-3780 Login to the router first, then go to the Setup tab across the top & Internet Setup down the left. This is slightly different to the other DSL routers, as it has both Connect Mode Select & Maximum Idle Time options. However, setting the Connect Mode Select to Always-on greys out the Maximum Idle Time setting. Then click the Add/Apply button at the bottom of the page. Page 4 of 6 Date : 19/05/2015

5 HG633 & HG635 routers Note: this option is only available if these routers are connected to an ADSL line, it is not a valid option when the router is directly connected to a VDSL line. VDSL uses the WAN connection mode of PPPoE, so it is by definition, always on. Like any other Ethernet connection, doesn't have or need a trigger mode, if the router is powered on it will connect. Log on to the router, click on the Internet tab across the top & then Internet Connection down the left hand side. Then click on the link Click here to show ADSL Connection. In the next screen, expand either the Internet_DSL section, or the PTM section (depends on the current configuration of the router) & click the Edit button:- Scroll down to the PPP Information section and the PPP Trigger mode is probably set to Dial on demand. Change this to Always online. Note that the Idle time & Set idle time manually options will no longer be available. Click the Save button. Page 5 of 6 Date : 19/05/2015

6 Netgear Routers 1. The IP address to access Netgear routers is The default username is admin, and the default password is password (without the quotes). 3. Choose Setup from the top menu, then ADSL Setup from the left hand menu. 4. Set Idle time out to 0 then click Apply. Page 6 of 6 Date : 19/05/2015
