1 In an effort to improve the public s access to health care information, this webpage contains information about the licensing and inspection of Ambulatory Surgery Centers. Health care facilities are inspected regularly to assess how well the facilities comply with state licensing standards and/or with the federal regulations governing Ambulatory Surgery Centers. It is important to note that months typically pass between inspections and much can change for better or worse in a facility between inspections. Inspections are unannounced and typically last two days. Department staffs also conduct inspections of ambulatory surgery centers if concerns or complaints of regulatory violations arise, or to approve additional services. If the facility is found to be out of compliance with regulations during an inspection, a report of deficiencies is issued to the facility. In addition to the findings of inspections, the site also contains the facility s response, or Plan of Correction, for any deficient practices and copies of communications between the state inspectors and the facility. Facilities can appeal the deficiencies. (If a facility is inspected by a private accrediting agency, that inspection report and Plan of Correction will not be found on this site.) There are several kinds of Ambulatory Surgery Centers in New Jersey: Private Physician practices with only one operating room. These facilities must register with the Department, but are not inspected by Department. If, however, the facility wishes to accept federal Medicare or Medicaid funding, Department staff will survey on behalf of the federal government. Alternately, the facility may choose to be surveyed by a private accrediting agency that is approved by CMS. All other facilities must be licensed by the Department and are surveyed routinely for compliance with regulations.
