Welcome At Overland Park Regional Medical Center, we strive to provide you with the birth experience you want. We can assist you in a fully natural, un-medicated delivery, but we are equipped to handle the most complex deliveries when necessary. Discuss your preferences with your doctor or nurse midwife and he or she will be able to share with you what your options are based on your specific case. When you arrive we will all work together as a team to balance your preferences with a safe and comfortable delivery. We will customize your birth experience within the scope of safety and medical regulations. Our rooms offer flexible lighting and you are welcome to bring your favorite music with you. Four of our delivery rooms offer Jacuzzi tubs. Pain medications are available. Anesthesia staff are available 24 hours per day if you desire an epidural. We have portable monitoring technology so you will have the freedom to move around as you wish. Many patients enjoy walking the halls while being continuously monitored. Well newborns can stay with parents in their room, but a nursery is available if you need some time to rest. Our Level IIIb Neonatal Intensive Care Unit can provide care for babies with complications. Your visitors may be in the labor room with you or in the waiting room. If you must have a C-section you may have one support person with you, other visitors will be allowed to see you as soon as possible. Maternity Checklist Women s Center Tours If you would like to see our birthing facilities, Women s Center tours are available three times per week: Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. You do not need to schedule your tour in advance. Just come to the hospital at any of the scheduled times and have a seat in the patient waiting area, located next to main floor elevators. A tour guide will arrive and take you to the maternity floor where you will see a labor room, a motherbaby room and the nursery. If you choose to deliver at Overland Park Regional Medical Center, please complete and send in a pre-registration form (page seven), schedule a pre-admission appointment and choose an infant physician. Other options are available as you desire. Maternity Pre-Registration (page 7) Please complete the maternity pre-registration form, located on page 7, and send at your earliest convenience. This will help ensure accurate and timely submission to your insurance company and allow you to receive an estimate of your costs, based on your individual insurance carrier. A prepaid envelope is attached to the registration form. If your envelope is missing you may mail to: Maternity PreAdmission, Overland Park Regional Medical Center, Quivira Road, Overland Park, KS or if you prefer, it can be ed to oprm.babies@hcahealthcare.com. i
Please include a copy of the front and back of your insurance card, and a copy of your photo ID (driver s license, passport, etc.) Mothers will be registered using the name on your current photo ID. Babies are labeled with their mother s name during the hospital stay, however, the baby may be given whatever name you choose on the birth certificate. It can take several weeks for you to receive a new insurance card. Select a Physician to Care for Your Baby at OPRMC (See enclosed physician list for helpful instructions.) You must select a physician, with privileges at Overland Park Regional, to care for your baby in the hospital, well before your expected delivery date. A list of these doctors is provided in this booklet. This may be a pediatrician or a family practice physician. If you have selected a physician who does not have privileges at OPRMC, then you still need to select one from the list for temporary in-hospital care. Be certain that the physician is covered by your insurance. Additional help for physician selection is on the back of the list. Prenatal Education To enroll in childbirth, breastfeeding or sibling classes, call Healthy Arrivals at or log on to Log on today and register, for the best selection of date, time and location for your classes. The breastfeeding class is highly recommended for those planning to breastfeed. Schedule Your Pre-Admission Appointment at During this private meeting you will initiate your baby s birth certificate registration form (baby s name is not included at this time), discuss and sign consent/refusal for infant procedures, receive information about hospital routines and options, ask questions and share requests for your birthing experience. Then when you arrive at the hospital in labor, you will be able to concentrate on your childbirth experience. You should call for your appointment at about 30 weeks gestation. Appointments are required to ensure privacy and individual attention for all families. (Please have your baby s doctor chosen by your scheduled appointment time.) If your schedule may be a little busy toward the end of your pregnancy, please call before your 30 week date to schedule your appointment. Everyone needs a Preadmission appointment. Safety and privacy are top priorities for you, your infant and family The Women s Center at Overland Park Regional Medical Center is a secured unit. Additionally, other measures are in place to ensure safety and privacy. Visiting Hours in each unit have been established to allow you and your family time to rest and enjoy the birth of your child. Our employees wear picture identification badges with a pink stripe. Please feel free at anytime to ask the staff to show their picture I.D. Matching identification bracelets will be placed on you, your infant and Dad/significant other at the time of your infant s birth. You can rest peacefully knowing OPRMC also has a state-of-the-art, electronic infant security system in place. You will receive safety tips and information upon arrival at the hospital. one
10500 Quivira Road Overland Park, KS (913) Overland Park Regional Medical Center offers a wide range of women s health services in addition to maternity services. These include preventive services from state-of-the art diagnostics and screenings, to advanced services such as gynecological surgeries and cardiac catheterizations. The Women s Center Mission Together we touch life by providing high quality perinatal and neonatal services in an atmosphere of compassion, care and respect. Birthing Center and Women s Services Overland Park Regional Medical Center offers family-focused comprehensive care that will enhance your birthing experience from conception, throughout your pregnancy and after you deliver. Labor and delivery rooms have delivery equipment and baby warmers to serve you and your family during the entire event. When mom and baby are stable and rested, you will move to the quieter mother/baby unit for the remainder of your hospital stay. There, the staff, including lactation consultants, will continue to educate and care for you and your family until discharge. Our Pre-Admission Program helps to streamline the hospital admitting process with individual appointments, familiarizing you with the hospital surroundings and paperwork before you are admitted. FREE Valet Parking is available to our patients and their family members. Drive to the hospital s Main Entrance where a valet parking attendant will greet you and park your car. The service is available Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. If your visit extends beyond 8:00 p.m., call the Information Desk at extension 5535 and the volunteer will have hospital security give you your keys and drive you to your car. Web Babies. With parental permission, this free service posts newborns photo, height, weight, first and last initial onto our Web site at This is posted within three business days after discharge. High-Risk Pregnancies and Deliveries Our nursing staff is accustomed to handling obstetrical cases that require additional knowledge and specialized training. Perinatologists work with physicians throughout the Kansas City area, western Missouri and eastern Kansas to deliver specialized perinatal care for high-risk maternity patients. They provide 24-hour response to emergency situations for a 15-county area. two
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit In the event of unexpected difficulties, moms and families may remain in the convenient and familiar surroundings of our facility because we have a Level IIIb Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The NICU has state-of-the-art equipment designed to support newborns with respiratory difficulties or other high-risk complications. Our staff is specifically trained in neonatal care and consists of neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners and nurses. The team also includes a social worker, respiratory therapists and lactation specialists. Family-Focused Maternity Care At Overland Park Regional Medical Center we believe family-focused care encompasses the family s educational needs from conception through discharge of you and your baby. We recognize family individuality and promote interaction between the family and infant to provide a complete circle of care. We believe: Your new baby will involve your whole family in a time of change and growth. You, your physician or midwife, and our staff are partners in providing a friendly, comfortable, safe, and supportive atmosphere for your baby s birth and first days of life. You share the responsibility for making decisions and participating in your care and the care or your baby. You and all persons involved in your birth experience deserve to be treated with respect and integrity. 6 Before your baby arrives Find a pediatrician or family physician who has privileges to practice at the hospital where you will deliver your baby. This physician will check baby while he or she is in the hospital. Often, this doctor also will be baby s post-hospital doctor. If not, you ll want to retain another physician for vaccinations, well-baby checks and other needs. Financial Concerns: It is a good idea to check into your insurance coverage, so you are prepared for any out of pocket expenses. We do not want you to be surprised about financial issues, so here is a checklist for you to follow. First, check to make certain OPRMC is covered by your insurance. Next, check your insurance coverage. Often, you may be responsible for some portion of the hospital s bill. This varies widely depending upon your personal coverage. This bill is usually separate from your maternity care provider s bill. There may also be other physicians involved in your care here at the hospital who will have bills separate from the hospital. Physician groups who may be involved in your care and bill you separately include: anesthesiologist, pathologist, cardiologist, emergency department physician, radiologist. The anesthesiologists and pathologists are the ones who are most frequently involved in maternity care, but others may also provide care. We occasionally have patients who find their health insurance doesn t offer maternity coverage. If this is the case, we offer a discounted Prepayment Plan. If you need information about this, you may call our financial counselors Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For patients with last name A-L (913) or M-Z (913) Get a car seat: Kansas will not permit your baby to leave the hospital without a car seat. Baby stores and discount department stores carry them. Infant seats have a handle that lets you carry baby to and from the car. It is recommended that you visit your local police or fire department to assist with proper car seat installation. Seats are installed incorrectly about 85% of the time. To search for locations go to then enter your zip code. Be sure to call ahead to determine availability and times. Select baby names. If you have already chosen a name, you can complete baby s birth certificate and social security number application quickly and easily in the hospital. Birth certificate information MUST be completed before discharge. Lactation Services Taking a breastfeeding class is a good way to ensure breastfeeding success. For information about breastfeeding and other prenatal community classes, go to or call Healthy Arrivals at Even though breastfeeding is a natural process, some mothers find themselves facing challenges. Our lactation consultants are registered nurses who work with mothers to prevent and solve four
breastfeeding problems. They are certified by the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultants and have extensive educational and clinical expertise. Services offered include breastfeeding classes, inpatient counseling to mothers, routine follow-up calls after discharge and daytime phone assistance for problems. Breastfeeding support is available by calling (913) Breast Pumps and Breastfeeding Supplies We now offer all new breastfeeding mothers information on breastfeeding supplies, types of breastpumps, rental and purchase resources. If you prefer to rent a breast pump, you can do so by calling customer service at Medela ( ) or Engell ( ). They can help you locate the nearest rental office. If you have difficulty, please let us know and we ll help you. Prepare your home: Plan where your newborn will sleep during the first few days or weeks. Set up the bassinet or crib and diaper changing area (either a changing table or cleared and covered dresser with changing necessities nearby) with a diaper pail for soiled diapers, a hamper for your baby s laundry and a plastic-lined wastebasket for discarded wipes. Childproof your home by removing all hazardous materials from lower level cabinets and/or attach locks to cabinet doors. Place baby-safe plugs in electrical outlets throughout the house. Buy and test a baby gate that prevents falls down stairs. Pack it up! Getting ready for the hospital In the flurry of activity as you rush to the hospital, you might forget a few necessary items. Most birthing counselors suggest that you pack your hospital bags at least two weeks before baby is due. Some suggest packing two bags one for labor and delivery and a second for postpartum and your trip home. Either way, you will want a few essentials: For Labor Comfort (be sure to put your name on everything) Birth plan (if you prepared one) Pillows (if you want your own) Non-skid slippers or warm socks Warm or cold comfort items (if you desire) Massage tools that relax you Portable Music Device (if you d like) Snacks and beverages (for Dad) Chargers for cell phones, cameras Lip balm Postpartum Essentials Phone numbers of family members and friends you ll want to call (cell phones may be used) Nightgown or pajamas with easy access for nursing (if you want your own) Bathrobe Nursing bras (if needed) Toiletries Beauty products Loose-fitting outfit for your trip home Clothes/blanket for your baby to wear home Car seat five
