FROM THE PRESIDENT S OFFICE LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT S OFFICE As stewards of Marshall University, an important part of our job is to ensure our university is represented in a professional and consistent manner. Visual materials create a lasting impression that lives on in publications and videos creating both an opportunity and an obligation to further and protect the Marshall brand. We have developed this style guide to assist everyone in maintaining the Marshall brand according to the established guidelines. The guide details all of the university approved logos and the manner in which they are to be reproduced. In 2006, we held a number of Marketing & Branding meetings with MU officials. One of the main goals of these meetings was to promote consistent usage of the Marshall brand so that university publications and products were professional and easily identified. We are reissuing this guide as a follow-up to those meetings. All materials need to follow the enclosed style guidelines and, if not printed by Marshall University Printing Services, must be approved by the university before they are produced. Publications that do not follow the style guidelines and are not a professional representation of the university may not be distributed. For more information on this process, I ask that you contact Mallory Jarrell at (304) or haye1@marshall.edu. She serves as our Marketing and Branding Coordinator and will work with you to achieve your goals. We are all caretakers of the Marshall University brand. By utilizing these guidelines, you are doing your part to strengthen our brand and unify the Marshall image well into the future. On behalf of President Stephen J. Kopp, thank you for your continued support of Marshall University. Sincerely, Matt Turner, M.A.J. Chief of Staff/Senior Vice President for Communications MARSHALL UNIVERSITY GRAPHIC STANDARDS MANUAL 5
THE PURPOSE OF THIS MANUAL The purpose of this manual is to acquaint the various offices, divisions, departments and colleges at Marshall with the Marshall logo policies and procedures. Please refer to this guide to answer questions that may arise regarding the use of any Marshall logos. If you still have questions, contact Printing Services, or They can assist you in deciding whether your publication abides by the university s graphic standards. Materials and publications produced by various academic units often have a look unto themselves that may or may not be consistent with that of the rest of Marshall. Because publications are one of the key marketing tools of the university, they should represent the university in a consistent and professional way. MANDATORY GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW Any publications in violation of any of these guidelines may not be distributed. Regardless of how the project is funded, any use of the Marshall University name or trademarks must follow established guidelines. If providing a file for printing, please make sure to review the procedures provided in our brochure online at: No alterations to existing Marshall University trademarks are allowed. Unit logos must follow approved template, shown on the next page of this publication. 6 MARSHALL UNIVERSITY GRAPHIC STANDARDS MANUAL
ABOUT THE MARSHALL UNIVERSITY LOGO WHO GOVERNS THE LOGO USE? The Marshall University logo is a registered trademark, may only be used for approved purposes, and cannot be modified in any way without approval. Printing Services and the Licensing Program work together to oversee the proper use of Marshall logos and to maintain the Marshall brand. SAMPLE INSTITUTIONAL LOGO The Institutional version of the Marshall logo is used on institutional identity materials, as well as other publications. The President s Office is responsible for publications produced at the university level. If publications are found not to conform to the guidelines outlined in this manual, the department or program producing the piece will be expected to take corrective action. This includes ceasing distribution and producing a corrected version of the publication. SAMPLE BAR M VERSION This is primarily for university wide use on printed materials and merchandise. TM You can get electronic files of the logos from the official Marshall University web site, or by contacting Printing Services. WHAT LOGOS MAY I USE? The Marshall institutional identity was designed to achieve a standardized graphic identity for administrative and academic units throughout the university. It is to be used according to the specific guidelines outlined in this manual. SAMPLE UNIT VERSION OF THE LOGO This version of the Marshall logo provides each unit a consistent element to standardize all the units that make up the university. TM For institutional letterhead, business cards and envelopes, the logo with the stylized M letter with the words MARSHALL UNIVERSITY to its right is used. For most printed publications, the Institutional or Bar M logo should be used, depending on the layout and other aspects of the publication. Unit logos consist of the primary University logo with the unit s name centered beneath the symbol. The purpose of this logo is to present a unified, consistent image for the university, while recognizing the individual department. Contact Printing Services for specific details. MARSHALL UNIVERSITY GRAPHIC STANDARDS MANUAL 7
ABOUT THE MARSHALL UNIVERSITY LOGO TYPOGRAPHY A stylized M, and the words MARSHALL UNIVERSITY set in Octavian, make the Marshall logo.. The stylized M and the words MARSHALL UNIVERSITY cannot be separated. The stylized M should never be used as a stand-alone element, without the words Marshall University. The word MARSHALL in the Bar M should never be substituted with another unit name unless approved. INSTITUTIONAL TYPEFACES Octavian Minion Myriad TM The typeface used to form the M and the words MARSHALL UNIVERSITY is based on Octavian. Octavian should be used in conjunction with the Marshall logo when possible in order to build a strong, consistent visual identity for the University. The serif typefaces Goudy or Minion are also approved typefaces when Octavian is not available. Myriad is a complementary sans serif typeface. TWO-COLOR MU LOGO OFFICIAL COLORS OF THE TWO-COLOR LOGO Pantone 356 Pantone Process Black The preferred Marshall logo is the two-color version using the specified Marshall Green and Black. No other colors may be used for the two-color logo. Different interpretations of the logo would be: CMYK equivalents, allowing the logo to be printed in process color. World Wide Web and other electronic applications that require RGB equivalents. If and when an additional color is used on communications material, it should complement the university s official green PMS 356. ONE-COLOR MU LOGO The official ink color of the one-color logo is PMS 356. This should be used whenever possible. In instances where budgetary constraints are a factor the one-color logo version may be printed in black. The one-color logo may be reversed (white) when a project dictates that you need to place the logo on a dark background. ACCEPTABLE ONE-COLOR LOGOS IN BLACK AND WHITE 8 MARSHALL UNIVERSITY GRAPHIC STANDARDS MANUAL
THE UNIVERSITY SEAL THE UNIVERSITY SEAL The Latin version of the seal is reserved for the use of the President s Office only. The university seal and Marshall University logo should never be combined. The English version of the university seal may not be substituted for the Marshall logo. This version may be used for merchandising and certain documents, such as commencement, diplomas and certificates. It may not be used on letterheads, or general publications, either printed or online. UNIVERSITY SEAL - LATIN VERSION This version is to be used ONLY by the president s office. The seal should be used at a size no smaller than 1 1/4 in diameter to prevent the details from filling in. The university seal should never be positioned at an angle. A clear zone of 1/4 must always be maintained around the seal. No text or graphics may appear in the clear zone. In general, the seal can appear in black or green PMS 356. The seal should never appear in two colors. When a black and white application of the seal is used, it must be printed as a solid black on a white field. At no time should it have other graphic devices, color and/or shapes added to it. UNIVERSITY SEAL - ENGLISH VERSION This version is to be used on official university materials and certain merchandise items. If the seal is to be foiled, embossed or reversed on a dark background, a reversed version of the seal is available, contact Printing Services or printing@marshall.edu. 10 ABOUT THE MARSHALL UNIVERSITY LOGO TRADEMARK LICENSING PROGRAM Marshall has a trademark licensing program in place that allows logos to be used in products made by licensed vendors. For specific information regarding the trademark licensing program, including obtaining a license, visit ATHLETIC LOGOS ATHLETIC LOGO 4-COLOR VERSION ATHLETIC LOGO 1-COLOR VERSION The official athletic brand identity is consistent with the institutional brand identity program. In addition to the stylized M, a graphic buffalo has been added representing the Thundering Herd. Separate athletic units are represented with the stylized M with the unit name set in the bar. The athletic units and the Alumni Department are only allowed to utilize this version of the Bar M. The Marshall athletic identity system was designed to achieve a standardized graphic identity with the University. The official athletic Marshall logos are shown here. Additional athletic word marks are also available, see the official logo sheet (Pages 15-18) for samples. These logos should be used in sports-related publications in which it is deemed appropriate. The word mark cannot be altered in any way. The phrase may only be used in the logo format unless it is written in a body of text. 10 MARSHALL UNIVERSITY GRAPHIC STANDARDS MANUAL
