3 CP2102 Serial to USB Converter Board Introduction: It is the smallest USB - serial module. This module is designed according to Users' convenience. It helps User to interface the UART (Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter) supporting devices/modules with the PCs or laptops through serial or USB port. This module has standard USB type-b connector to minimize the size of the module. It is ideal for new development purposes as well as a platform for adding a USB or serial interface to existing product designs. MAX232 IC acts as transition stage between RS232 (Recommended Standard 232) and TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic) voltage levels. One of the pin of MAX232 called receivers (Rx) convert from RS-232 to TTL voltage levels and driver pin (Tx) converts from TTL logic to RS-232 voltage levels. The MAX232 supports RTS/CTS hardware handshaking. Similarly, CP2102 acts as transition stage between USB and TTL voltage levels thus allowing data to be read/write through USB port. 4 Hardware Description: CP2102 Expansion pins for external use CP2102 IC USB type-b Connector Serial Port (DB9 Connector) GND VCC RxD TxD MAX232 IC CP2102 IC: CP2102 IC is the one which converts TTL logic to USB logic so that devices works on TTL logic can share the data with devices connected through USB cables. MAX232 IC: The MAX232 is an integrated circuit that converts signals from an RS-232 serial port to signals suitable for use in TTL compatible digital logic circuits, so that devices works on TTL logic can share the data with devices connected through Serial port (DB9 Connector). USB type-b connector: USB connector provides connection between CP2102 Serial to USB converter board and USB port of Computer System. This USB is type-b Female connector, its pinout is as shown in figure. Serial port / DB9 connector: User just needs to attach RS232 cable here so that it can be connected to devices which has Serial port / DB9 Connector.

5 Indicator LEDs: Indicator LEDs just used to indicate status accordingly. These are four LED represents Power Status, Suspend Status, RxD and TxD respectively. Power LED will keep on until the power supply is enable to CP2102 IC. Suspend LED will show whether data/communication is suspended or not. When data is received by this module RxD LED will blink. When data is transmitted by this module TxD LED will blink. VCC, GND, RXD and TXD pins: These pins will be used connect external connections to devices. VCC pin should be connected to regulated +5V DC only from any of source, if USB cable is connected to device then no need to give external +5V DC supply to this pin. GND should be connected to 0V DC supply of device so that both devices has same ground. RXD pin should be connected to TXD pin of connected device whereas TXD pin should be connected to RXD pin of connected device. CP2102 Expansion Pins: These pins lets User to have ease access of CP2102 IC s pins externally. These pins are expanded by using Straight Single Berg Strip Connector. User can directly connect these pins for external use through Single Berg Wire or Relimate connector. To know more details about these pins please go through Datasheets.

6 CP2102 Driver Installation: This guide will help user step by step installation of CP2102 Serial to USB converter Driver. Following are illustrated steps for installation of CP2102 driver in Windows 7 operating System. Step 1: Double Click on installer.exe file of CP2102 Driver. Step 2: Welcome window will appear, click on Next > button.

7 Step 3: Read License Agreement carefully. Select I accept, then click on Next. Step 4: Setup will ask User about destination location for installation folder, if user wants to change then click on Browse... else keep it default. Click on Next >.

8 Step 5: Click on Install button. Let the installation be completed.

9 Step 6: make sure that if Launch the CP210x VCP Driver Installer check ed or not, if not then make it checked. click on Finish. Step 7: Setup will ask User to install driver software, click on Install button.

10 Wait until installation will finished. Step 8: Click on OK if User gets message Installation completed successfully.

11 Step 9: To check which COM port is assigned to this module, Go to Start Menu > Right click on Computer option > Click on Manage option. Step 10: Now connect USB cable s one end to Desktop or Laptop computer system s any of the one USB port, then connect another end to CP2102 module s USB port as shown in picture.

12 Step 11: Computer Management window will appear, select Device Manager from left side list. Step 12: Expand Ports (COM & LPT) option and then check COM port assigned to Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge. In this way User has successfully installed device driver.
