SIU Medical Library Department of Information & Communication Sciences POWERPOINT 2010: CREATING POSTERS BEFORE STARTING THE POSTER GUIDELINES SIU MEDICAL LIBRARY POSTER GUIDELINES THE LIBRARY ONLY USES 36 INCH PAPER ROLLS. Either the width or length of the poster must not exceed 36 inches. The opposite direction may be any size. If the poster is less than 36 inches, the requester will need to trim the edges. The printer does not print to the edge of the paper, so there will be a small white margin. POWERPOINT'S MAXIMUM LENGTH IS 56 INCHES. To get a larger poster make the poster dimensions half size, then use the scaling factor. For example, to make a poster 36 in. x 72 in., make the PowerPoint slide 18 in. x 36 in., then scale by 200% in the print set-up when sending to the large format printer. THE POSTER SERVICE IS FOR ACADEMIC, SCHOLARLY, RESEARCH AND CLINICAL WORK. Poster printing hours: 8:00 AM-4:30 PM, Monday through Friday POSTERS FOR MEETINGS Meeting websites usually publish poster guidelines Check the meeting website for poster size guidelines. SECTIONS OF A SCIENTIFIC POSTER Title and Authors, include department and university names Introduction Objectives Materials and Methods Results Discussion Conclusions References Acknowledgements There may be some variation in sections, depending on the subject.
CREATE A NEW POSTER PAGE SETUP Open a new PowerPoint file. CREATE ONE BLANK SLIDE: Choose the Home tab and click Layout. Choose the Blank layout. In the dialog box that appears, enter the dimensions for the poster. If you need a poster longer or taller than 56 inches, cut the dimensions in half. (ex. 18 x 30 ) When the poster sent to the printer, it can be scaled by 200% to print out at the full size. Although posters for most meetings in the United States are landscape, some European meetings ask for portrait orientation. INSERT TEXT 2
TO INSERT A TEXT BOX: 1. Choose the Insert tab 2. Click Shapes and choose the Text Box icon. 3. Click on the slide and drag to draw a box for the text. 4. Start typing in the box. 5. To change fonts and text size, select the Home tab. GUIDELINES FOR TEXT Type of Text Title Section Heading Text Size 96 point, Do not use all upper case. 44 point or larger 30 point or larger Use bullet point outlines. Best fonts: Ariel, Times New Roman, Calibri, Helvetica, Tahoma. Do not use more than two fonts in one poster INSERT IMAGES Choose the Insert tab Click the Picture icon to insert a picture from a file. TIPS FOR USING IMAGES Use high resolution pictures ppi,. For photographs: 5 x 8 is best. Do not try to use logos and pictures taken from the Web. They are low resolution and will not look good when enlarged on a poster. 3
INSERT TABLES AND CHARTS Use tables to present information in an easy to read format. TO INSERT A TABLE: 1. Choose the Insert tab 2. Click the Table button. 3. Select the number of rows and columns that you need. TO INSERT AN EXCEL SPREADSHEET INTO THE SLIDE: Choose the Insert tab Click the Table button. Choose Excel Spreadsheet at the bottom of the drop-down window. TO INSERT A CHART 1. Choose the Insert tab. 2. Click the Chart button. 3. Choose the type of chart. 4. An Excel spreadsheet will open with sample data which you can replace with your own. 4
ADD BACKGROUND DESIGN THEMES PowerPoint has built-in themes that you can apply to your poster. A theme includes the following: A set of colors that work well together. A set of fonts that looks good together. Each theme has a font used for headings and a font for regular text. A set of background styles, including background colors and effects such as patterns and gradients. A set of design effects such as line and fill styles. From the Design tab you can choose from a gallery of themes. Themes Background Styles BACKGROUND STYLES A background style is a combination of a background color and a background fill effect. From the Design tab, click the black triangle next to Background Styles to display and choose a background style. Use Format Background below the gallery of styles to make changes to color, fill, pattern, and gradient. 5
TO PRINT THE POSTER SIU MEDICAL LIBRARY POSTER PRINTING SERVICE Posters will be printed for faculty, staff, students and residents of departments that have paid the yearly $100 fee for this service. There is no charge to the individual, but posters must be related to academic, scholarly, research and clinical work. When the poster is ready to be printed you have several options: 1. Save onto a flash drive and bring to the Library 2. Send to reference@siumed.edu. Include your name and department. 3. Send to reference@siumed.edu, via the secure server, (recommended, especially for large files). Include your name and department. Allow 24 hour turnaround time for posters. SIUSM TEMPLATES Poster templates in commonly used sizes may be found at Note that 60 and 72 inch long posters are half-size (18 x 30 and 18 x 36 ) and need to be scaled to 200% when printing. The templates have a placeholder for the SIUSM logo that should be replaced with the official, high-quality version. Each department has a person authorized to provide you with the logo. Any questions regarding logo usage should be referred to Public Affairs in Springfield, or logo@siumed.edu. CG 2/17/2015 6
