The offer includes 3D visualisation and design of ship equipment and other various structures with the use of well recognised computer programmes. CTO specialists undertake the engineering supervision during the construction stage of merchant ships and warships. The design of research facilities, such as: subsonic wind tunnels, cavitation tunnels, towing carriages for model basins and facilities for off-shore structures testing is an important field of CTO's design team activity. The mentioned equipment is of significant importance for research centres serving various sectors, both waterborne and land industries. The platform for model tests of the off-shore structures The design of a wind tunnel 5

STRUCTURE MECHANICS Vibration and noise Vibration is sometimes introduced intentionally in technique, but much more often it appears undesirable in operation of various machines and devices. CTO specialists measure construction vibrations and determine their causes. Then the most appropriate course of actions to reduce or eliminate vibrations is recommended. When vibration exceeds an acceptable level, or its character affects construction safety and user comfort certain modifications regarding construction itself or its operation are proposed. The knowledge accumulated throughout the years of experience is stored in the databases containing results of computational analyses as well as vibration measurement carried out during the ship sea trials. This enabled CTO to develop an original and verified method of reducing the ship hull vibration. MSC PATRAN/NASTRAN based analysis of ship hull vibration CTO also solves problems related to the acoustic protection of crew cabins and general purpose rooms on ships and other various vessels. On the basis of noise level and vibration predictions, the solutions are developed which guarantee that both the obligatory noise regulations and the client's special requests are fulfilled, ensuring that the construction and equipment costs remain reasonable. Evaluation of H.T. disconnector's seismic resistance the real object, calculation model and free vibration form 6

Structure strength The structure strength numerical models CTO specialists perform loads measurements of both waterborne and land structures as well as other mechanical devices applying advanced measuring equipment and specialized software. The expertises and recommendations related to the structure safety and optimisation are elaborated on the basis of the conducted measurements supplemented with thorough analyses. Field measurements CTO specialists perform different measuring services in every environmental condition for both waterborne and civil engineering by using advanced measuring equipment. The services provided cover the measurements of ship speed and manoeuvrability, shaft power, bollard pull, noise level, local and global vibration of the structures as well as accommodations illumination. Moreover, the monitoring and expertises related to shaft line torsional vibration are provided. The measurement of the noise level on the ship The vibration measurement of the shaking screen The free vibration of the shaking screen structure 7

HYDROMECHANICS The seakeeping model tests The optimal ship CTO is commonly recognised as a research centre conducting experimental model tests of ships, yachts, off-shore structures and other floating or hydro-engineering objects in towing tanks, as well as in cavitation and wind tunnels. Thanks to the experiments combined with hydrodynamic numerical computations, a tested vessel gains the optimal shape in terms of resistance, propulsion, seakeeping and manoeuvring qualities. The ship manoeuvrability is predicted on the basis of the experimental model tests carried out with free running models in the CTO shore station at the Lake Wdzydze. The Ro-Pax ship resistance model tests The model tests of a rescue boat 8

CTO specialists design ship propellers taking into consideration all their real operation aspects. Particular attention is paid to eliminate the unwanted cavitation effects, e.g. noise or erosion and to reduce pressure pulses on the ship hull as well as forces and bearing moments acting upon the propeller shaft. The stern of the ship model prepared for propulsion tests CTO also carries out the experimental aerodynamic tests of sailing and motor yachts or other floating objects. Aerodynamics is believed to be a key factor in the performance of racing yachts, but it is also of significant meaning for any vessels, since the wind loads either when running at speed or stationary influence propulsion system parameters. The model tests of passenger ferry in the wind tunnel The adequate hydrodynamic properties of any ship are vital for her operation safety, economy and efficiency. There is little doubt as to the importance of paying attention to the properties of a ship from the early design stage onwards, as this yields considerable advantages during her operation. The experimental and numerical model of ASD vehicle launching www Information on the programme supporting the sailing and motor yacht designing can be found at 6

NUMERICAL SIMULATIONS The numerical analysis of the flow around a ship with operating propeller CTO performs a wide range of numerical analyses, among which the most vital to ship design are local and global stress-strength analyses with fatigue calculations, as well as vibration predictions of hull structure and propulsion system. Apart from ships, other various technically advanced civil engineering constructions and offshore structures can be analysed to determine their operation safety. The MSC PATRAN/NASTRAN, MAESTRO and in-house software developed by CTO are employed for numerical analyses and computations. The deformation of the ship hull obtained thanks to MAESTRO based strength analysis CTO offers services related to the strength computations based on the Finite Element Method (FEM), thermal stress predictions, fatigue strength computations and vibration analyses in order to develop the optimal solution from a technical point of view, as well as from economic and operational safety perspectives. The pressure distribution in the flow around the ship with operating propeller 10

The velocity distribution in the wind tunnel The hydrodynamic analysis of open water propeller in the homogeneous velocity field CTO specialists perform CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamic) simulations, principally using the professional calculation package STAR-CCM+ CD-Adapco, which can be used to analyse the flow around ships, simulate heavy winds loading upon constructions (i.e. windmills, the above-water parts of ship hulls, buildings, etc.), analyse flow through various fluid-flow machines, heat exchangers and many others. A significant scope of the hydromechanics computations at CTO are conducted using own software, developed and verified through years of experience. 12 RESEARCH FACILITIES CTO owns unique facilities at a national level, which have been the pride of the company since its beginnings, as well as a number of new laboratories which provide services to both waterborne and civil industries. Deep-water towing tank It serves as a basic research facility used in the experimental ship hydromechanics. Its main purpose is to enable the model tests of a ship hull resistance and power demand of a ship propulsor. The results of model tests form the basis to prepare the ship's propulsion prediction which determines the key decisions in her design process. The deep-water towing tank is equipped with a wave generator, which enables seakeeping model tests of vessels. The results of these tests are vital for safety and economics of navigation. The deep-water towing tank The application of the deep-water towing tank is not only limited for the ship oriented purposes. It is the convenient environment to conduct model tests of devices which convert renewable energy acquired from the sea, investigate how moving objects interfere with free water surface (e.g. a simulation of emergency plane landing on water), tests of coatings which are supposed to reduce friction drag, and tests of basic flows. The CTO deep-water towing tank is equipped with a towing carriage, planar motion mechanism (PMM) and wave generator of regular and irregular waves that corresponds to the sea state up to 8-9 on a 1:25 scale. The model test of motor yacht in deep-water towing tank 12

Auxiliary towing tank The model tests of off-shore platform The auxiliary towing tank is a research facility used mainly for model tests of ships and other vessels operated at low speed, including grounded or anchored structures. It enables also to simulate the sea area of the limited depth. The results of these tests contribute to the design of off-shore structures, inland navigation vessels, and sea going vessels within the scope of shallow-water operation conditions, e.g. approaches to ports, straits and river mouths. The auxiliary towing tank is equipped with a towing carriage and a wave maker, which generates irregular waves that correspond to the sea state up to 8 on a 1:50 scale, and regular waves of up to 0.5 m height or irregular ones of up to 0.18 m height. The auxiliary towing tank 13

RESEARCH FACILITIES Shore station for manoeuvrability model tests With shore station for manoeuvrability model tests located in Joniny at Lake Wdzydze, CTO is capable to carry out manoeuvrability tests using exactly the same hull models as used in the towing tanks. The tests are performed using self-propelled models with a radio-controlled steering system. The facility is equipped with an automatic system, which identifies the model's trajectory. The principal aim of the model tests at the shore station is to develop predictions on the manoeuvrability of the real vessel, and to determine whether these predictions comply with IMO requirements. The model tests at Lake Wdzydze Cavitation tunnel This particular research facility is used in experimental ship hydromechanics, mainly for cavitation model tests of propellers, as well as rudders in a simulated behind velocity field. The tunnel is equipped with hydro-acoustic chamber, which enables to perform tests necessary to predict the level of noise generated by the ship's propeller. The equipment of the cavitation tunnel consist of the high speed video system for the observation and recording of cavitation phenomena, dedicated dynamometers, system for measurement of pressure pulses on the hull surface and laser anemometer (LDA) for the velocity field measurements e.g. at propeller disc. The cavitation model test 14

Wind tunnel The characteristic of the research facilities Deep-water towing tank The wind tunnel enables to learn more about the aerodynamics of sea vessels, land objects, both stationary and movable, as well as flying ones thanks to the information obtained during the experiments on the model or prototype. The following aerodynamic tests are conducted: ź the influence of the wind on exposed parts of ships and other floating vessels, offshore structures, as well as other hydro-engineering objects, ź aerodynamics and flow around road and rail vehicles, ź aerodynamics of wings, planes, helicopters and other flying objects, ź aerodynamics of wind turbines, ź influence of wind on buildings, communication infrastructure objects and other large civil engineering objects, ź transport of air masses and air pollution. 16 ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH Facing harsh environment In case of fire in a building, ship, land vehicle or other human-operated object, it is of utmost importance that key construction components such as doors, windows, walls, and various partitions should have appropriate fireproof qualities, which guarantee both life protection and the time necessary to evacuate. Safes and fireproof cabinets are required to have a confirmed capacity to protect the goods inside them. The fire resistance test of door fire tests The fire test of double-leafs door The main subjects of the fire resistance tests are as follows: ź civil engineering construction and ship components such as: doors, windows, non-bearing walls, firewalls, ceilings, roofs, floors, sealing of installation through building partitions, fire protection hatches as well as canals, ventilation shafts and ducts, lift doors, ź rail and road vehicles' construction components, ź soundproof barriers, ź safes, strongboxes and fireproof cabinets for data storage. The smoke-proof properties of doors and shutters as well as materials intended for smoke curtains are tested in the fire testing laboratory. In the thoroughly controlled conditions, the rate at which fire spreads on a surface, the flammability of plastics and other materials are determined. CTO's Fire Testing Laboratory offers research tests according to the EU standards. The safe after the fire test The fire resistance test of acoustic panel Smoke-proof chamber 16
