2 CPCTAS was a project financed under the 7th Framework Programme within Regions of knowledge Work Programme through the Coordination and Support Actions funding scheme GA The project coordinator was Faculty of Science, University of Kragujevac, Serbia (FSUKG) Project beneficiaries were: Faculty of Medicine, University of Kragujevac (FMUKG) Institute Curie Paris (ICSR) School of Medicine, Aristotle University Thessaloniki (SMT) Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Skopje (FNSMS)

3 OBJECTIVES University оf Kragujevac, Faculty of Science The broad objective of this project was to establish regional centre for pre-clinical testing of active substances that will cooperate with both hospitals and pharmaceutical industries from many countries of Western Balkans The first project objective - to bring together the existing laboratories at the University of Kragujevac currently working on some of the aspects of drug testing and establish formal centralized research CENTRE for preclinical testing of active substances The second project objective - to reinforce research potential of the CPCTAS through the networking and international cooperation of existing laboratories in Serbia with the members of the European Research Area. Reinforcement of the existing CPCTAS capacities will be made through training and re-training of the researchers, upgrade and renewal of equipment, and exchange of know-how and experience

4 The third project objective - to provide international reliability of the future research results. That would be provided through standardization of the testing methodology and accreditation of laboratory according to ISO standard and appropriate EU legislative The fourth project objective recognition of the Centre as a respectable The fourth project objective recognition of the Centre as a respectable and reliable partner in the field of testing of active substances would be realized through disseminative activities

5 Management of the project Consortium management tasks and achievements The kick-off meeting at ICSR was realized in June, 2008 and the project management structure was established. 6 RESULTS University оf Kragujevac, Faculty of Science The main activities necessary for the realization of this project were international cooperation through networking, exchange of know-how and experience and upgrading the research capacities to the highest quality Central laboratory for pre-clinical testing is organized at the Faculty of Science at University of Kragujevac, in coordination with Faculty of Medicine The dissemination of CPCTAS development was carried out through the website, contacting with Institutions of interest, and finally, accreditation of CPCTAS according to ISO standards, by respectable organization in Serbia and EU During the project CPCTAS was registered as a formal Centre in FSUKG Statute according to the internal regulations and with approval of the University of Kragujevac. New modern equipment was purchased Six young researchers and one technician were employed in CPCTAS Fifteen and a half months of scientific trainings for 10 young researchers was realized Over six months of re-training for experienced researchers was also realized

7 RESULTS University оf Kragujevac, Faculty of Science Five workshops and one international scientific conference were realized within the project in order to improve research potential of the CPCTAS through exchange of know-how and experience with eminent researchers from EU institutions Quality management system according to ISO/IEC standard was established in central CPCTAS laboratory Information system was integrated within the quality management system Dissemination of the project results was realized through organisation of six disseminative events, through CPCTAS website, through poster presentations and distribution of promotional materials at conferences WIRE 2010 and ESOF 2010, as well through media coverage of project activities

14 LCMB FIELD OF WORK The main activities of the Laboratory are aimed at testing of the importance of physiological, genetic, molecular and biological tumor markers in assessing the effects of active substances and the prediction of pathological conditions in humans. Defining the mechanism of action of active substances in biological systems, with clear feedback for the chemical synthesis of new varieties with improved properties of active substances, as well as, defined output and distribution, clinical testing and application of the tested active substances, represents the objectives of the activities of the Laboratory The subject of the analysis that are carried out at the Laboratory include monitoring of in vitro effects of active substances on the cell lines of different origin Tests include cytotoxic potential of active substances on human cancer cell lines, while monitoring the type of cell death, the mechanisms of apoptosis, migration and angiogenesis and prooxidant-antioxidant mechanisms which underlie the regulation of these processes

15 The Laboratory provides practice and production of graduate and specialist papers, master theses and PhD theses to undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students of biology, ecology, medicine and pharmacy. Licensing of practical knowledge is future goal Educational activities based on collaboration with leading laboratories in the country and abroad, transfer of knowledge and the possibility of our staff training in partner laboratories and vice versa Participation in University SPIN-OFF activities (transfer of know-how in private sector) as future objective

16 Our Laboratory performs analysis that are according to standard SRPS ISO/IEC 17025:2006, granted by Accreditation Body of Serbia, starting from 25 th April 2012, accreditation No Accredited analysis are: MTT cytotoxicity test AO/EtBr staining of cells for examination of the type of cell death (with special emphasis on examining the mechanisms of apoptosis) Muliplex PCR testing for gene expression Immunofluorescence of tagged proteins or parts of cells Redox status tests (NBT, Griess, GSH)

18 RESULTS University оf Kragujevac, Faculty of Science Laboratory engages 6 young researchers (students of doctoral studies) through PIBAS project Since its establishment, Laboratory has been performing scientific research and educational activities; currently elaboration of 6 PhD theses is in progress For two-year period ( ), the Laboratory performed the testing of biological activities of chemically synthesized substances and extracts, i.e. isolated pure substances from plant material (over 120 samples) Technical equipment and educated personnel allow the Laboratory to develop within scientific research and educational work, but also an exit to the market and cooperation with the clinic and pharmaceutical companies
