Admission requirements The statuty minimum requirements f degree studies is a National Seni Certificate (NSC), with a minimum achievement level of 4 (50 59%) in four recognised NSC 20-credit subjects from the designated subject list below: Accounting Agricultural Science Business Studies (previously Business Economics) Consumer Studies (previously Home Economics) Dramatic Arts Economics Engineering Graphics and Design (previously Technical Drawing) Geography Histy Infmation Technology Languages* Life Sciences (previously Biology) Mathematical Literacy Mathematics Music Physical Science (previously Natural Sciences) Religion Studies (previously Biblical Studies) Visual Arts Prospective students in Grade 12 (final school-year) must use their final Grade 11 year mark (promotion mark) to apply. No Grade 12 marks will be considered f provisional admission. Please note that prospective students who have already left school should use their NSC/IEB* Certificate to apply (also refer to Higher Education South Africa on page 9). Additional selection criteria are applicable in applications f selection programmes (see faculty tables from page 11 in this brochure refer to Provisional admission is granted on the results obtained in the final Grade 11 year mark (promotion mark). Please note that the final Grade 12 results remain the determining fact with regard to admission. Also note that the achievement of the minimum requirements does not necessarily guarantee admission to any study programme. The calculation of an Admission Point Sce () is based on a candidate s achievement in any SIX recognised NSC 20-credit subjects (not only designated subjects), by using the NSC seven-point rating scale in the table below. Life Orientation is a 10-credit subject and may not be used f calculating the. Neither can Mathematics Paper 3 be used f this purpose. 5 3. Application f admission Applications open on 1 March of the year preceding the year of study. Owing to the large number of applications received every year, prospective students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible from 1 March. We recommend that you apply online at Once your application fm has been processed, you will receive an eight-digit UP student number. You are also welcome to download an application fm from the website. You may follow the progress of your application online via the UP Ptal (Student Centre). Visit However, if you do not have access to the internet you are still welcome to submit an application on paper. Just make sure that you do not use the previous year s application fm f this purpose. Application fms are distributed to schools may be requested by calling +27 (0) A nonrefundable application levy of R300 must accompany every application. The University will only accept iginal application fms. Faxed, scanned, ed application fms will not be accepted. Each student must complete only one application fm. The application fm provides f a first and second choice of study programme. It is strongly recommended that you also indicate a second choice study programme on your application fm. Refer to It is not advisable to apply f two selection programmes as your first and second choice. Selection programmes are study programmes with early closing dates and limited space and must preferably be indicated as first choice on your application fm. It is particularly imptant to note that applications f admission to any of the study programmes in the Faculty of Health Sciences and to the selection programmes BScArch Bachel of Science Architecture BScInt Bachel of Science Interi Architecture in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Infmation Technology, will only be considered if the relevant study programme is indicated as a first choice on your application fm. The following documents must accompany your application: A certified copy of your final Grade 11 examination rept indicating your promotion mark A certified copy of your ID your birth certificate Your completed application fm together with the prescribed, non-refundable application levy of R300, must reach the CSC befe the closing date. Application f admission to undergraduate academic study programmes f both South African and non-south African citizens close on the dates (specified in the faculty tables from page 11) in the year preceding the year of study. Restriction on student numbers Owing to constraints on the facilities of the University, the intake of students in all the study programmes is limited. It may even be the case that quotas are reached long befe the closing dates. Please note that meeting the minimum requirements of a study programme, as specified in this brochure, does not guarantee your admission. 4. Language policy and medium of instruction In conducting its business, the University uses two official languages: English and Afrikaans. In fmal education, the medium of instruction is either English Afrikaans, both of these languages, provided that there is a demand and that it is academically and economically justifiable. However, it remains the student s responsibility to ascertain on an annual basis in which language a module and any further level of that module is presented. In respect of administrative and other services, a student has the right to choose whether the University should communicate with him her in English Afrikaans. 5. Bursaries, awards and loans (financial aid) Students who are interested in the suppt bursaries and loans administered by the University should submit an application via the University s website This is, however, not applicable to achievement awards as a different process is followed in this regard. 6 Criteria and conditions Guaranteed undergraduate achievement awards are based on the average percentage obtained (not on the number of distinctions) in the end examination of the final school-year subject to the following conditions: Undergraduate achievement awards are made automatically to newly registered undergraduate students who meet the award criteria. Students do NOT apply f these awards. First-year students who register f studies at UP directly after Grade 12 (final school-year) who took a gap year(s) after their final school-year, who meet the award criteria, will be considered. Students who have previously registered at a tertiary educational institution pri to registration at UP will not be considered f an achievement award. Students who registered at UP in previous years, are also not considered. Qualifying students must be South African citizens permanent residents in South Africa, they must be citizens of a Southern African Development Community (SADC) country. The average percentage f award purposes is the average of the actual percentages obtained f all recognised NSC/IEB/Cambridge subjects taken, in their final schoolyear end examinations, based on the calculations done by the University of Pretia. The average percentage is not rounded off. The awards are finalised on the basis of the final marks that the University receives from the Department of Basic Education f the final school-year. Results obtained f papers that have been re-marked are not taken into account f award purposes. Awards are fully repayable if students discontinue terminate their studies in the relevant study programme f whatever reason during the year in which the award is made. If students change their study programmes during the year in which the award is made, the award value allocated f the study programme enrolled f initially will remain unchanged. That is to say, the award will not be cancelled adjusted upward/downward to align it with consecutive study programmes enrolled f. Certain subjects are excluded in the calculation of average percentages: Life Orientation Additional Mathematics Practical Music Grades 4 and 5 (Note: Practical Music Grades 6, 7 and 8 are considered f inclusion in the calculation of the average percentage if your music rept f this subject is not part of your NSC rept, please submit your official music rept to the Client Service Centre, Bursaries, Awards and Loans section, befe 28 January f consideration.) Other achievement awards Learners do not apply f the following two awards. These awards are awarded based on academic achievement. Only students with South African citizenship permanent residency in South Africa are considered f these awards. 7 Edu-loan Edu-Loan is a registered credit provider, allowing access to study loans f employees as well as full-time students. A student loan can include a whole range of student-related necessities such as books, accessies, laptops, university and private accommodation, as well as study tuition with a fixed monthly instalment. Anyone can apply f a loan (students, parents guardians), provided that the applicant is in full-time employment has a registered business. Special offer to top academic achievers The special offer to top achievers is based on average percentages obtained in the end examination of the final school year. This special offer may include guaranteed awards, placement in study programmes and/ residence placement. F me infmation on the University s special offer to new first-year students, visit Guaranteed admission to a non-selection study programme of a student s first second choice Conditions Applications must be received on befe 1 May of the year preceding commencement of studies. Payment should be done as required, f example books, food, travel, stationery, printing and internet. Payment of these fees are determined by the official date the University was notified in writing of the discontinuation. This rebate is only applicable on tuition fees. Students must apply annually. When modules are repeated, the full tuition fee will be charged again. Students must submit written proof from the sponss of the bursary awarded to them pri to registration, otherwise the registration fee will be payable by the student. Students should manage these costs themselves. In cases where discontinuation is due to the hospitalisation death of a student, cancellation fees may be waived if sufficient proof is provided. However, during the January and February registration period, the queues at the UP cashiers are excessively long, and may delay your progress f hours. This will reflect UP s bank account number when making a payment and will allow you to use your student number as reference. Financial need If you are not at all able to pay university fees due to financial need APPLY ONLINE at in 2014 f financial aid f study in 2015, and submit the required suppting documents as evidence of this financial need, which will be requested on the application system. The online financial aid application fm will be active annually from 1 August, and you require an eight-digit UP student number to complete the fm. No loan bursary is however guaranteed by NSFAS the University of Pretia. The closing date f applications is 30 September Tuition fees Tuition fees f 2015 depend on the study programme and modules selected by a student. F this reason actual costs can only reflect on a student s account once registration has been completed. These fees represent a combination of costs, which include fmal services rendered (ie lectures, practicals, computer labaty access and consumables used in labaties), as well as indirect overheads such as the provision of library and recreation facilities, security and cleaning services and electricity and water supply. Fees do not include the cost of prescribed books, study material other study-related expenses. The rate of inflation during 2014 can be used as a guideline to estimate the increase in tuition fees f Accommodation Only a limited number of places are available in the University s residences. Placement in residences is based on academic achievement () in Grade 11 and the date of your application. Consequently, you are strongly advised to apply f placement in a residence in March of the year preceding your studies. Please note that the demand f residence accommodation exceeds the availability and admission to a study programme can thus not guarantee placement in a residence. Guaranteed placement in residence only applies to students who meet the minimum requirements of the UP special offer to top academic achievers. Please visit Application f placement in a residence is made on the application fm f a study programme. Placement in a residence then takes place AFTER a prospective student has been provisionally admitted to a study programme. A bus service operates between Katjiepiering, the men s residences and the Hatfield Campus. The service is free of charge to residents. All students studying Education and applying f accommodation are automatically considered f residence placement at the Groenkloof Campus. Students, who study other programmes and attend classes at the Hatfield Campus, are also considered f residences at the Groenkloof Campus. A free bus service between the Hatfield and Groenkloof Campus is available f these students. If you have applied f any of the study programmes in Health Sciences as well as placement in a residence, you will first be considered temparily f residences situated on the Hatfield Campus. Students who are then selected f Health Sciences will be accommodated on the Prinshof Campus with compliance to the availability of places. During holiday periods residences are used f guest accommodation. Maintenance and upgrades are done during the April, July and December holiday periods. Students are therefe expected to vacate residences during these periods. TuksSpt Spt represents a significant part of student life. The University of Pretia provides students with opptunities to participate at club, national and international levels in a variety of spting disciplines. The University also boasts excellent spts facilities, which are highly regarded both nationally and internationally. The LC de Villiers Spts Grounds is centrally located and is easily accessible to students. TuksSpt has a large number of spts clubs and is currently the largest source of athletes f a variety of spts disciplines and national teams. Higher Education South Africa (HESA) A full feign conditional exemption certificate is a prerequisite and applicable to non-south African citizens and to students who do not have a South African National Seni Certificate (NSC) qualification Independent Examination Board (IEB) qualification and who want to enrol f undergraduate studies at the University of Pretia. This certificate can only be obtained from HESA.
