1 ENGL-3 Northern Lights [Exam ID:2DJNEJ] Scan Number:8586 Read the following passage and answer questions 1 through 25. Northern Lights 1 Granny parted the lace curtains at the living room window. She said, Lula, let s watch the night sky. Lula looked outside. She saw the pasture covered with snow. She saw the well-lit stars. Granny said, With luck, we may see the northern lights. 2 What are the northern lights? Lula asked. 3 They are flying colors, Granny said. Sudden colors that streak the air. 4 What causes them, Granny? 5 I m not certain, Granny replied. My mother, your great-grandmother, often told me that the northern lights were made by a pair of magical foxes. The foxes wagged and whisked their tails. Their tails swished sparks up into the atmosphere and created fox fires. 6 Fox fires, Lula said. 7 Yes, Granny confirmed. That is what my mother called the northern lights. Lula imagined a handsome fox with rusty fur. She peered hopefully at the sky, but the air looked dark and ordinary. 8 Granny went into the kitchen. On the stovetop, she heated a teakettle of water. She prepared a tray of teacups and shortbread cookies. She brought the tray to Lula. Lula was too excited to snack.
2 9 Granny nibbled at a cookie. She said, "Your great-grandmother grew up in the country of Finland. Finland has long winter nights. It has hills of snow and brightly painted buildings. The northern lights are common there." 10 Lula really wanted to see the lights. She asked Granny if they could go outside to look at the sky. Granny said, "Of course, but we must bundle up." 11 Lula put on her warm coat. She put on her mittens and wool scarf. She and Granny went outside. They walked a circle around the house. They heard the far-off hoot of a snowy owl. Lula saw deer hoof-marks in the snow. She looked for paw prints, the tracks of the foxes. Granny said, "We will watch for the northern lights tomorrow. The foxes are very unpredictable creatures." 12 Lula was cold and disappointed. She started to follow Granny back to the house, but a movement in the field caught her eye. "Look, Granny, look!" Lula said. She saw a red fox trotting in the distance. The sky filled with shifting light, magenta and green. The sky was beautiful. 1 Which sentence tells what is happening in the picture with the story? Your great-grandmother grew up in the country of A Finland.
