2 Name: Vanessa Flad, Karin Locher, Maria Mößlang, Teacher: Frau Willauer-Bohle School: Wolfegg Primary School Dozentin: Frau Prof. Dr. Massler Class 2 Topic: Carnival Costume Subject: Home Economics Subject Goals: - the pupils are supposed to use given material in the described way - to know why carnival is celebrated - to know the origin of the local traditional carnival figure ( Höllteufel ) Linguistic Goals: - the pupils are supposed to make use of the English language while talking about the topic -...learn new vocabulary: carnival, party time, costume, pirate, princess, prisoner, cowboy, Red Indian, belly dancer, witch, wizard, scare, (to) dress up Materials and Equipment: colored paper, wool, feathers, paper plates as masks, one traditional costume with mask, CD-Player, work sheet, colored pencils, story-book ( Maisy dresses up ), word cards, self-created costumes Time Scheduled progress Styles of learning Media ca. 25 min. ca. 20 min. ca. 30 min. ca. 10 min. The pupils form a circle. In the middle of the circle there are different carnival costumes. The pupils name the clothes and show the costumes while the teacher tells the names by using word cards. The teacher reads a part of the book Maisy dresses up to the class. After a short break all the teachers stand in front of the class and practice the new vocabulary. After this, the pupils have to draw themselves dressed up in a costume. After this, each pupil shows his/her drawing to the class and says: I am dressed up as a The teacher continues to read the book., individual work costumes, word cards book work sheet and colored pencils, drawings book ca. 5 min. ca. 20 min. ca. 15 min. The teacher encourages the pupils to stand up and dance in a short sequence with music. The teacher shows the traditional costume of a Höllteufel (hell devil) and tells the story about it. The pupils have to act it out. Now the teacher asks why carnival is celebrated. The pupils guess and the teacher gives the explanation by telling a story. CD-Player, role-play traditional costume and mask - ca. 10 min. The content of the story is discussed in German. - ca. 45 min. The pupils now create their own masks with the given materials At the end of the day, the pupils will dance and wear their masks. individual work colored paper, wool, feathers, paper plates as masks

3 Why do we celebrate Carnival? A long time ago, it was really cold in winter, people were freezing. They had no warm clothing. They had nothing to eat. They longed for spring. They longed for warm weather. At that time people believed in bad spirits. They believed that winter was a bad spirit, too. - A bad spirit that looked like an old and wild man in fur. Bad spirits had much power. Winter had much power, the power of snow, hail, frost and storms. The people wanted the winter to go away. They put on terrible masks. Behind the mask the people felt strong, as strong as winter. They put on masks of animals like birds, bucks and deer. They made a lot of noise to scare winter away and shouted: Go away winter! We celebrate carnival to scare winter away.

4 Story of the Höllteufel While the teacher tells the story, the pupils act out the story. Long, long ago, the people who lived here in Wolfegg (2 pupils come to the front) were very poor. They had no wood (teacher shows pieces of wood) and no money (shows money). In winter it was very cold and they were freezing because they had no wood to make a fire (picture of a fire). So they took a basket (shows the basket and gives it to the pupils) and went to the forest (picture of a forest hangs on the blackboard). In the forest there were many trees (2 pupils get green cloths to hang around their shoulders). In the forest they collected fir cones (puts cones on the floor) to make a fire. The pupils collect the fir cones. But in the forest there lived a devil. (shows the horns of the devil with his fingers)/ (another pupil comes to the front to act the devil ) this devil hid behind the trees (the teacher hides himself behind a tree/pupil and then the devil/pupils does the same) and waited for the people. When they were close enough (the teacher guides the pupils who collect the cones to the tree) the devil caught (gesture) them and took them deeper into the forest. (the pupils go to a certain corner of the classroom). The teacher asks another pupil to come to the front. The pupil gets a red cloth, because he is a fire. The devil dances around the fire and the people had to join him.( the 3 pupils dance around the fire). While dancing around the fire the people grew horns too. ( gesture) Now they were devils, too. And so there were more and more devils in the forest. Once a year only on carnival all these devils (point to the pupils) come to Wolfegg to have a big parade (shows a picture of a carnival parade).
