3 The Student Employment Service International students looking for a temporary job during their studies in Leuven are welcome to visit the Student Employment Service. We can provide information about job opportunities and answer any questions you may have concerning student employment law and employment contracts. How to find a job? If you are a student at KU Leuven, KHLeuven, Groep T or LUCA - Campus Lemmensinstituut, you are welcome to register at KU Leuven s Student Employment Service. The first time you come to the office you should bring along your residence permit and student card or admission letter. New jobs are posted on the online Student Job Database. As a KU Leuven student, you can log in using your KU Leuven Internet ID and password. Most international students will have to stop by the office first in order to register. Non-KU Leuven students will receive a personal account and password. You can find jobs for non-dutch speaking students on: Which students can work in Belgium? EEA NATIONALS The European Economic Area (EEA) includes all member states of the European Union plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. If you are a national of one of the EEA member states or Switzerland, you can be employed in Belgium under the same conditions as Belgians. You do not need a work permit (see further Non EEA nationals ).

4 For students from Bulgaria and Romania there is a transition period during which a Type C work permit is required in order to work in Belgium. Anyone living in Belgium for more than 3 months must register with the local authority! If you want to work in Belgium, please request a national number at City Hall. If you are a student from a country bordering Belgium (Netherlands, Luxembourg and France), you should also register with the local authority. Should you be staying in Belgium with a Bijlage 33 (Appendix 33), you have not obtained a national number and will therefore have to pay at least 25% non-refundable tax on your income in Belgium. NON-EEA NATIONALS Non-European students and nationals of Bulgaria and Romania (during the transition period) must possess a Type C work permit in order to work in Belgium. During official vacation periods, you can work without a work permit under the same conditions as Belgian students. Please note that students who arrive in Belgium during or just prior to the summer vacation period and who intend to commence their studies the following September are not permitted to work during that summer vacation!

5 n TYPE C WORK PERMIT The work permit must be requested by the student. You can only start working after obtaining a permit! The work permit is: granted for a maximum of 12 months limited to your stay in Belgium as a student valid for all activities carried out in salaried employment in Belgium valid for any employer With a Type C work permit you are allowed to work a maximum of 20 hours per week during the academic year. You are not allowed to work during mandatory course time. Application procedure You can only start the procedure after obtaining a residence permit. Students wishing to renew their previous work permit can start the procedure after obtaining Appendix 15 ( Bijlage 15 ). The Application file contains: request form information sheet copy of your residence permit certificate of registration in the Foreigners register You should request application forms from the correct Immigration and Employment Services Office (Dienst Migratie en Arbeidsbemiddelingsbureaus), depending on your place of residence in Belgium. If you are living in Leuven, you can pick up the necessary documents at the Leuven Stadskantoor and send these, together with your residence permit, to the Immigration and Employment Services Office in Brussels. 6 Which students are not entitled to work in Belgium? Some students are not allowed to work in Belgium, e.g. because of their residence status, the scholarship they receive or for other reasons. The Student Employment Service can assist you in determining whether your residence status allows you to work and/or whether additional formalities must be completed. PhD students: Social security In principle, all employees, including students, must pay social security contributions (13.07 %) to the National Social Security Office (NSSO). As a student, you may be exempt from social-security contributions, paying a solidarity premium of 2.71% on your gross wage instead. The following conditions should be met: You should be employed on a student contract. You are entitled to a quota of 50 days per calendar year during which you can work at reduced contributions. Your student job should take place outside the periods of compulsory attendance at your educational institution. The online application Student@work - 50 days enables you to check the number of days remaining in your student employment quota. To log in to this application, you will first need to request a token. Taxes If you do not have to pay social security contributions, no income tax is withheld. If you do not meet these conditions (see above, Social security ), an income tax of 11% to 20% will be withheld from your wage. Students usually do not earn enough to pay tax and can reclaim this amount from the Tax Office.

7 Student employment contracts In principle, students must be employed on a student employment contract. This type of contract can be used during the academic year as well as the summer vacation period. Conditions for a student employment contract: It must be a temporary contract for a maximum of 12 months. It must be drawn up in one of the 3 national languages to comply with Belgian law (mostly Dutch or French). It must be drawn up in duplicate, with a copy for the student and one for the employer. It must be signed before the start of employment. Be careful about student jobs without a contract (which is often the case for teaching or translation jobs etc.).
