1 Fun for classes/camps/birthdays and more. We all know the more we incorporate fun into any workout, class, conditioning or birthday the better the results! Here s a video of some ideas to incorporate it s great for all groups even if you don t do birthday parties. Some ideas that came from congress in this and other presentations At birthday parties start with exciting fun music and get them moving quickly. Tire them out a bit so they ll listen when the safety items come up in a bit. After going to a few stations and areas in the gym gather them all bring them back for a group game. Here are some examples: - musical hula hoops: - Mr wolf what time is it? 3 o clock = 3 steps, 5 o clock 5 steps if it s dinner time try to run and catch them - Bulldozers and Builders with foam or cubes knock them down on one team build them other- other team. - Hot potato game can use wiggles hot potato song - Shark attack - Ship game Don t ever do elimination games when someone s out make them go do 5 jumping jacks in a certain spot - when teaching skipping have them hold a hula hoop so knees have to touch it - stretching clinic says warm ups don t make kids flexible don t do extra flexibility at the beginning of class do it at the end- stretching actually hinders jumping ability so you want to stretch just enough to make kids warm but do flexibility a the end of class or even as homework at home. - How staff should interact clinic make sure everyone acts like they care about each other, no one is ALLOWED to walk around with a chip on their shoulder. No negativity, if there s an issue with another staff member, get to the root of the problem and address it. Conditioning games Airplane Tag Equipment 2 folding mats opened up, one at each end of the floor. Safety 5 feet from any other piece of equipment or permanent structure! Have the students hold a correct push-up position on the first folding mat (Belly Button UP, No Bootylious sticking up in the air) These students are safe if they are on the mat in the correct position! The instructor/coach or another student is in the middle to try to tag them after they say ready for take-off GO. The tagger is the bad weather. If caught they student can become a tagger or go to an specified area and do jumping jacks to fix their plane and re-join! Flat tire game Equipment Matted Area Conditioning FUN Push-Ups

2 Have all the students in a Push-Up position and demonstrate the 3 kinds of pumps and the 3 types of flat tires. Slow Leak Lower very slow Medium Leak Lower Medium Speed Blow Out Crash to the Floor as Fast as you can Slow Pump Raise back up very slow Medium Pump Raise up regular speed Super Pump Raise up SUPER FAST Weather game Equipment Matted Area and 1 Foam Pit Block per Child Conditioning FUN Push-Ups Have all the students in a Push-Up Position (It s their Dog House) and put the pit block under them it s their Puppy Dog ) Ask them: When there is bad weather what does it do outside? If they say rain close up the dog house by lowering down and laying on the foam block! Then ask them if it s sunny yet? When they say yes, that s when you push back up! Examples: Snow, Thunder, Lightning, Hale, Tornado or Hurricane (On these: We grab the block and roll around holding onto the block doing log rolls and going crazy) I ve never had a preschooler say Nor'easter - Here's my layman's try at a Nor'easter definition: Similar to a hurricane a nor'easter is counter-clock wise turning cyclone (a storm system circulating around a center). Nor'easters are spawned by a very curvy Jet Stream that dips far south allowing cold arctic air to meet warm air. SEE YOU LEARNED SOMETHING NEW TODAY NEVER STOP LEARNING! MR. Wolf Equipment White Line on Floor Ex and Open Space for Running Back to that White Line or Folding Mat. Have the students line-up on the white line. The students say What Time is it Mr. Wolf? The Instructor says 5 o clock the students count out loud as they take 5 steps toward the Instructor (Mr. Wolf I prefer Mr. Fox ) When the instructor says Dinner Time then Mr. Wolf chases the students back to the white line! Some small children are sometimes afraid of the WOLF, so explain its pretend and FUN! Fake them out by saying Ding Dong Time or Day Time Red Light Green Light Equipment White Line on Floor Ex and Open Space for Running. This is the classic STOP LIGHT running game! Green - move fast Yellow - move slow Red Freeze (If you are caught moving send them to exercise and get their spot back ) Variations - Use different locomotor movements: skipping, galloping, tip toes, backwards, sideways, etc. Let the students call out the colors Sailor s Game Equipment 4 folding mats opened up, one at each side of the floor. Safety 5 feet from any other piece of equipment or permanent structure! The Sailors pick any mat to stand on. Pick a student to be the shark or the instructor can be the first shark! The shark says Sailors Swim the sailors run, skip, gallop, etc. to a different BOAT (Folding Mat) If the Sailor is tagged they turn into a Shark. Clean up the Backyard Equipment Center line on the Floor Ex and 20+ Pit Blocks.

3 Place half the blocks on one side of the floor and half on the opposite side! When you say go then each team throws the trash to the other side for 2 minutes. The team that throws the most blocks to the other side wins! The losing team gets to pick a player from the winning team and a new 2 minute game begins. Human Bowling Equipment All your small wedges and octagons Set-up the wedges and octagons like bowling pins (1, 2, 3 configuration will be enough = 6 octagons or small wedges total) Each Player does forward rolls across the Floor Ex until they get close to the PINS (wedges and Octagons) At that time they open up and try to knock down as many pins as possible as they are laying on their back in an open straddle! Bday games Color Hoop Game Equipment Enough Hula Hoops for each child in your class! Make a Circle with the hoops Music means GREEN LIGHT or GO No Music means STOP Students Walk around Hoops when the music STARTS around the Outside. When the music STOPS they STOP and pick their favorite COLOR. Pick a color and those students are caught. Have them go to a specific area and do Jumping Jacks and they come right back in. Or the group that is caught can pick the next color and then go right back in Safe Obstacle Course (Spacing and Equipment) What kind of Background Music? Radio Disney - Techno Disney Kid Friendly Crazy Frog Small Area then Expand into Larger Area PROMOTE PROMOTE PROMOTE Gladiator Games Slam Dunk, Score a GOAL, Pit Races, Relays, Etc. Shark Attack Game Equipment 3 different color Folding Mats Divide into three Groups Red Fish, Blue Fish, Gold Fish or Nemo, Dori, Turtles Say Blue Fish Skip out and play. They can go anywhere in the ocean (Floor Ex), then call out the other two groups the same. When you say SHARK ATTACK all the fish have to get back to their homes before the SHARK TAGS THEM! Hot Potato Game Equipment Nine Foam Blocks (4- Blue, 4- White, 1 Pink) Form a Circle Shoulder to Shoulder Pass the block to your right when the music STARTS. Hold the block in the air above your head when the music STOPS 1st turn White blocks do 5 Jumping Jacks, Blue Blocks give to a friend to do your Jumping Jacks, Pink Block do 10 Jumping Jacks Variation All who have a block do Jumping Jacks, those who don t have a block do Jumping Jacks. Use Push-ups for Older Students Ship Wreck Game There are many versions of this game. Below is a description of a basic game as well as many add-on type activities: Us the floor exercise area or open space free of obstacles. The students/gymnasts pretend to be on a ship. The lines on the floor ex, gym, etc. help establish the borders!

4 If someone does the wrong movement or is the last one to arrive to an area they walk the plank to a specific area and do 10 Jumping Jacks and return right back to the game! Bow Line designated as the front of the ship Stern Line designated as the back of the ship Pirates are Boarding Huddle in the middle of the area Hit the deck Lay in the prone position or Pushup Position Shark While laying in the prone position (Clap your hands behind your back) Cock Roach Lay on your back and kick you arms and legs Sea Sick Do crunches and make loud barfing noises Captains Coming Stand at attention and they students/gymnasts can t move until you say at ease (This is the only part of the game that is like simon says) Shooting Star Jumping Jacks Cabin Boy Run in Place like you are getting the captain his coffee Dolphin Jump up and down like you are leaving the water Mermaid Superman s in the prone position Ship Wreck Put your hands over your face and knock your knees together Anchor Hold a Scale Lifeboats Any line/mats/certain color line or specified area Overboard Get toe to toe with a partner Three Women/Men Eating Once you have three people sit with pretzel legs facing each other and pretend you are eating 4 Men/Women Rowing or Pile of LUMBAR Four people sitting in a straddle one behind the other pretending like they are rowing a boat 5 People Pointing North Five people stand and make one point straight up in the area right next to each other S.O.S. Get into a split Prep or Splits and wave in the air with both arms Beach Whale Do the Worm or flop around while you are doing supermans Add-ons after you shout out Overboard: Once everyone is paired up with a partner you can add the following partner type stunts: Bunk Beds, Field Goal, Chicken on the Hen House, The Letter A, Table and Chairs, Backpack, Basketball, and many more! Once you have four people together have them make a letter or a word (Hi, YMCA, It, LOFT, etc. Make sure to stress PG type words) Bunk Beds Chicken on the Hen House Monkey in a Tree Basketball Field Goal Letter A Back Pack Lover s Leap Four People make a WORD How to do the best Birthday Party Ever by Randy Parrish How to use music and games to offer the best Birthday Parties!!!!!!!!! Be there early and set-up! (Professionalism) Introduce yourself and greet the party goers! (Create a Friendly environment) Run them and wear them out with music or games! (Channel their EXCITEMENT)

5 Talk about the gym safety rules (Safety First, Second, Always) FUN, FUN, FUN Deliver twice the value of what the parents paid for the party! (Parties create more business ) Always focus on the Birthday Girl or Boy! (Know their name, Make them feel SPECIAL) You make the difference as to where they have their next party or if they sign up for classes! PARTY FORMAT Meet & Greet Fast Moving Music or Game Safety Rules (Very Important) Obstacle Course/Specific Area/VARIETY a. Close Equipment by covering it with Mats or Signs b. Mark areas to line up c. Offer non-gymnastics activities d. Play Appropriate Background Music e. Bring the Party to the Floor Exercise Area every minutes for a Game or when it gets stagnate
