1 VSO MEDIA ROOM Photos Bios Info Media Contact: Caroline Márkos x266 For Immediate Release February 23, 2015 MEDIA RELEASE The VSO s March Concert Listings Featuring piano superstar Lang Lang, the Pacific Rim Celebration, Ann Hampton Callaway singing Barbara Streisand, and a tribute to Frank Sinatra Vancouver BC February ends and March begins at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra with our twonight Pacific Rim Celebration. These two performances will celebrate the Lunar New Year and showcase some of the most renowned music and artists from Japan. The first concert celebrates the Chinese Lunar New Year the Year of the Sheep (also known as Goat or Ram). Join the VSO and the acclaimed young Chinese conductor Perry So for an exciting concert featuring Zheng Lu s Good News from Beijing, Xian s famous Yellow River Concerto, as well as performances by one of the world s most renowned Chinese Pipa players, Guilian Liu; and Li Bo playing the rare and exotic Mongolian Horse Headed Lute. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 7:30PM, Orpheum Theatre. The second of the two concerts in this Pacific Rim Celebration is a Japanese Celebration celebrating the 125th anniversary of the opening of the first Japanese Consulate in Canada, in Vancouver. In this concert, the VSO presents a special celebration of Japanese music and artists in an evening featuring sensational Japanese violinist Akiko Suwanai performing Beethoven s great Violin Concerto, acclaimed Koto player Yuriko Nariya, and the combined voices of the Cattleya Chorus, Sakura Singers, Winds Choir and NAV Chorus, conducted by Ruth Suzuki. SUNDAY, MARCH 1, 7:30PM, Orpheum Theatre. Following the Pacific Rim Festival we welcome the 2013 winner of the prestigious Sir George Solti Conducting competition, James Feddeck, leading a fascinating program that features Victoria-born violin prodigy Timothy Chooi, winner of the 2012 OSM Standard Life Competition, performing one of Bruch s greatest works, his wildly popular Violin Concerto No. 1. This exciting concert will celebrate the 150 th anniversary of the birth of great composer Jean Sibelius, with selections from many of his best-known works: Finlandia, Karelia Suite, The Swan of Tuonela, and the Violin Concerto. The VSO s sold out Chamber Players series returns mid-march with another concert of intimate and electric chamber music played by our esteemed VSO musicians. Our lively London Drugs VSO Pops series picks up again in March with multi-platinum singer, composer, and stage actor Ann Hampton Callaway singing the music of the legendary Barbra Streisand. Acclaimed pops conductor John Morris Russell leads the VSO and Ms. Callaway through a musical collage of one of the most celebrated singers of our time. Singing timeless classics from five decades of Barbra Streisand s multi-faceted career, Callaway crafts a loving musical portrait drawn from Barbra s Broadway years, films, pop albums, and new works written just for her, in a tribute to this musical icon that you will never forget. 3 Following Lang Lang, the VSO welcomes back to Vancouver another of the world s most electrifying young pianists, Yevgeny Sudbin. Hailed as one of the greatest pianists of the twenty-first century, superstar Yevgeny Sudbin performs one of the most famous and popular works in the classical repertoire, Tchaikovsky s exciting Piano Concerto No. 1.
