Movac mobile vacuum system The third generation mobile waste system from Envac
Quiet and efficient waste collection without Since the early 1960s, Envac has specialised in the development and installation of automated, underground waste collection systems based on vacuum technology. Envac installed its first system back in 1961 at Sollefteå hospital. The mobile vacuum system was developed during the late 1980s as a complement to Envac s stationary vacuum system. Since then, thousands of residential areas, particularly in the Nordic countries, have been enhanced with Envac s mobile vacuum systems. This third generation of mobile vacuum systems now takes the development of a sustainable waste collection service a huge step forward. Efficiency coupled with high collection capacity A key objective has been to improve collection efficiency and increase user and environmental performance. The system s capacity is vastly increased by connecting the VL-5, the third generation s vacuum vehicle, to the new screw tanks. In comparison with previous mobile collection systems, emptying time is cut in half and collection capacity is more than doubled. Two new features The new Movac system consists of two main components: The new, third generation s mobile vacuum vehicle, the VL-5 and the screw tank concept. These new features ensure a remarkably efficient and environmentally-friendly method of waste collection in urban and suburban areas compared with all other collection systems currently on the market. The screw conveyors in the storage tanks feeds the waste out into the pipe system. Not only is the emptying process faster, it is quieter too, thanks to reduced negative pressure in the vacuum vehicle. An improvement made possible by the new improved screw tanks. 2
physical strain The increased pipe diameter makes it possible for the system to handle larger waste bags. Reduced collection costs and an enhanced environment Faster collections and higher capacity plus reduced driving and labour requirements mean lower collection costs and a healthier environment. Waste from shops and restaurants too The system can cope with bags containing up to 60 litres of waste thanks to the increased pipe diameter (400 mm). Card reader systems can also be used to allow selective access to inlets and individual invoicing according to usage and the type of waste. Greater opportunities for source segregation It is possible to achieve a simple and practical system of source segregation by installing several inlets for different kinds of waste. Another option is to have just one inlet for several materials, which are separated later at a central facility. This technology is used on the continent and is called Material Recycling Facility. 3
This is how Envac s third generation mobile The third generation mobile waste system offers users and waste management staff a convenient and environmentally-friendly method of dealing with waste. Centrally-located chutes The rubbish bags are placed into an inlet, which has been installed either indoors or outdoors with easy access for users in mind. The bags are stored in sealed, underground tanks that are connected to docking points via an underground pipe network. The docking points are strategically located With the docking points located at a distance from residential areas, the vacuum vehicles do not need to enter narrow alleys or courtyards. Simple emptying process The underground tanks are emptied at regular intervals, according to the volume of waste and the storage capacity of the tanks. The vacuum vehicle that empties the tanks at the docking points creates a negative pressure in the Movac the process 1. The waste is thrown into a disposal inlet, one inlet per fraction. 2. The waste is stored below the inlet in a screw-feeder tank. 3. The tank is emptied when the screw at the bottom of the tank feeds the waste into the transportation pipe together with the airflow created by the vehicle. 4. The waste is transported from the tank to the vacuum vehicle at a rate of 90 km/hour. 5. A vacuum pump on the vehicle creates the requisite airflow. 6. Before the transportation air is expelled outdoors, it passes through a special filter to remove any impurities. 4
vacuum system works pipe system. The waste is effectively and sucked out of the tanks through the pipes into the container on the vehicle where it is compacted. The driver of the vehicle supervises the process and can control the order in which the tanks should be emptied. Weighing As the waste is emptied, the amount from each tank is weighed in the vehicle and recorded. Property owners and businesses can then be individually invoiced for the waste they produce on the basis of this information Docking points can be raised or at street level. 5
Yesterday s waste management Waste collection is one of the most important services carried out by local authorities. Not only does a badlyorganised system of waste collection lead to hygiene problems, it also creates a negative image for the area and town. Littering and traffic problems A well-organised system of waste collection should really be inconspicuous and available on demand, just like other infrastructures, and not governed by the accessibility of vehicles and storage bins. Conventional waste collection in towns and cities places a series of challenges on the housing, urban and working environments. Rubbish and items for recycling left exposed in bins and skips along streets and in public places easily lead to litter, unpleasant smells and hygiene concerns. Risk of accidents The dangers posed by refuse vehicles reversing in residential areas are a highly and frequently debated issue in many countries. Heavy and dirty The manual handling of bins, rubbish sacks and containers is heavy and strenuous. It also entails physical risks such as cuts, scratches and allergic reactions. 6
Tomorrow s solution: Releasing the cities of a growing waste problem Unlike a conventional waste collection system, the mobile system affords many advantages: No open storage The inlet is installed in an easily accessible location for users. The waste and recycling material is stored in a closed underground tank, directly beneath the inlet. This reduces smells and litter. Enhanced working environment Physical strain on waste collection employees is eliminated by the fact that waste bags are placed in the inlets gone are the days of dragging, lifting and pushing heavy bins up and down stairs, over doorsteps, through courtyards and along pavements. Injuries such as cuts and scratches are no longer a concern. Valuable space is left free for more useful purposes Waste is stored underground instead of taking up valuable ground-floor space. Housing, shops or play areas can be built in spaces that would otherwise have been occupied by refuse collection rooms. And since the need for heavy collection vehicles is drastically reduced, residential areas can be planned with a strong focus on efficiency and the environment. Better safety for residents The docking points are strategically located so that the tanks can be emptied without any disruptions to traffic. The need to drive heavy refuse vehicles into residential areas is greatly reduced, which naturally increases safety for those living there particularly for young children playing outside. 7
A sustainable waste solution As economic growth and volumes of waste continue their upward trend, society places increasingly higher demands on hygienic and environmentally-correct systems of waste management. We want to increase recycling rates without putting more strain on the environment or compromising the level of service for residents. Movac guarantees a better environment at a lower cost and with satisfied users. Enhanced living environment The need to drive heavy refuse vehicles into residential areas is reduced by 60 to 80 percent by planning collection routes along major thoroughfares. Less transportation means less risk of traffic jams, noise and air pollution. Biofuel The third generation vacuum vehicle, the VL-5, has been developed in collaboration with Scania and is designed to run on biofuel too. 8
Accessibility for residents Envac s system offers residents accessibility and convenience. The inlets are centrally located and linked via an underground system of pipes which means residents don t have to walk far to dispose of their rubbish and the whole area looks cleaner and tidier, with much less litter. It becomes easier to create natural and attractive areas where residents can socialise. This makes it possible to optimise the level of service, resulting in satisfied users and improved recycling. Separation of source The mobile waste system is able to handle several different waste fractions at one time. The residents and businesses who use the system are provided with special pass cards or transponders for registering the user, time and amount and type of waste. This can then be used to further improve separation of source. Separation of source and recycling Incinerable waste is sent for incineration and generates electricity and heat. Organic waste materials can be decomposed to produce compost and biogas. Mixed packages can at a later stage be separated for recycling. 9
The ideal system for small and large and new and old residential areas Small and medium-sized areas Envac s third generation mobile waste system offers a highly flexible solution for small and mediumsized areas. A flexibility that enables free-standing buildings, with a dozen or so apartments, and extensive areas, with hundreds or thousands of apartments, to be connected to the system. Number of households per inlet Envac s calculation software calculates the size of the tank and the number of chutes required in relation to the anticipated volumes of waste and scheduled collection rate. Older buildings The mobile waste system may also advantageously be installed in older buildings where there is often a cellar that can house one or more tanks. The pipe Commercial waste system is then connected to a docking point outside on the pavement or adjacent to the building. It is also possible in most cases to connect existing rubbish chutes to the mobile system. Terraced housing Because terraced housing areas are popular with young families, waste collection is often problematic and collection vehicles must be driven with extreme caution. Envac s mobile system radically reduces the need for collection vehicles and is therefore highly suitable for terraced housing areas. With its larger pipe diameter (400 mm), Envac s system is the ideal solution for small shops, restaurants and offices. It affords tangible benefits for commercial properties by increasing levels of hygiene at work and freeing up space that can be better utilised. Commercial users can be provided with special pass cards, keys or transponders for individual access to the chutes. This also allows commercial waste volumes to be registered separately from domestic waste. 10

Storage tanks and pipes Storage tanks The screw tanks have been designed to improve cost efficiency in the waste handling process and provide more reliable transportation of waste to the pipe network and vacuum vehicle. Tanks can be placed, either individually or in groups, in concrete rooms built in situ below ground level or in other free areas. Envac also has prefabricated, ready-built concrete rooms (SCT-PM) with a screw tank, motor and other accessories all pre- installed. The tanks are available in various sizes and optional number of inlets, which allows for greater customisation. Envac s solutions for active dimensioning create considerable potential for achieving an efficient and sustainable system. Pipes The tanks are connected to a system of 400 mm steel pipes that are laid underground at a depth of 50 cm or more. A screw tank installed in an existing cellar. On the left. 15 Vacuum vehicle VL-5 Our new vacuum vehicle, the VL-5, is designed to handle waste with more efficiency and environmental friendliness, and more quietly than previous waste vehicles. The driver manages the entire process single-handed and controls the emptying of the tanks from the vehicle. The waste is compressed in the vehicle and the air is filtered before being expelled. The emptying process is quieter because the negative pressure is lower. The increased capacity makes it possible to empty more tanks on each run, thereby reducing mileage and the amount of heavy traffic in the area. The vehicle is normally a triple-axle VL-5. The vehicle in the photo was ordered specially for Trondheim in Norway. L H OBS! DENNA RITNING ÄR VÅR EGENDOM OCH FÅR ICKE UTAN VÅRT MEDGIVANDE KOPIERAS, VISAS FÖR ELLER UTLÄMNAS TILL TREDJE PART.
