Industry China Telecom, Nokia Marked Major Milestone in FDD-TDD Carrier Aggregation 3 September 2014, China Telecom and Nokia Networks announced the world-first FDD- TDD carrier aggregation including a user device chipset. In the demonstration by China Telecom, Nokia s LTE base station achieved interoperability with a commercial user chipset developed by Marvell. This successful interoperability is a milestone toward commercial adoption of the carrier aggregation to significantly improve the LTE network speed and coverage for LTE users in areas where both variants of LTE are deployed. A stable peak download speed of 260 Mbps was achieved in the carrier aggregation demonstration with FDD 20 MHz in 1.8 GHz and TDD 20 MHz in 2.6 GHz spectrum. For the total speed, FDD spectrum contributed to 150 Mbps while TDD spectrum contributed to 110 Mbps. The successful interoperability of Nokia s LTE base station with a user device chipset means the FDD-TDD carrier aggregation is rapidly getting closer to real deployment for the benefits of LTE users. This accomplishment is very significant for China Telecom as it can utilize its FDD band 3 for improving LTE coverage, and TDD band 41 for improving throughput and capacity for the best possible LTE service experience. Carrier aggregation will allow the operator to optimally use the scarce spectrum resources while providing the best LTE service experience. It s highly satisfying to achieve yet another world-first toward commercialization and globalization of FDD-TDD carrier aggregation, said Zhang Qi, Vice President of TD-LTE, Nokia Networks. This achievement with our partner China Telecom will also encourage other operators globally to look at further spectrum combination for FDD-TDD carrier aggregation into advanced 3GPP Rel-12. We are already working with many major operators globally to deliver FDD- TDD convergence for commercial use. Nokia s Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Station, a Single RAN Advanced platform, was used for the carrier aggregation interoperability with user device chipset. 8

Industry Singtel, Ericsson and Qualcomm Realized FDD-TDD Carrier Aggregation SingTel, Ericsson and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. have realized the live demonstration of FDD-TDD Carrier Aggregation using commercial track hardware and software. The demonstration achieved 260 Mbps downlink speeds. Leading FDD/TDD convergence Tay Yeow Lian, Managing Director for Networks, SingTel says: "We are already using dual-layers of LTE FDD with LTE- Advanced Carrier Aggregation, and we know the performance of our mobile network is critical to ensuring that our customers have a great experience on their smartphones and tablets. Therefore, we will continue to explore the future option of bundling even TDD spectrum into the LTE carrier aggregation to expand network capacity, allowing our customers to enjoy consistent high data speed download even at high traffic areas. The technical demonstration took place at the SingTel office in Singapore on October 3, 2014, utilizing a Qualcomm Snapdragon(TM) 810 processor, a product of Qualcomm Technologies, and Ericsson high-performance LTE software designed to support the company's multistandard RBS6000 family of base stations for macro and small-cell networks. In the demonstration, Ericsson aggregated 20 MHz of LTE FDD spectrum with 20 MHz of LTE TDD spectrum, supporting peak data rates up to 260 Mbps. FDD / TDD Carrier Aggregation enables operators to deploy their FDD and TDD network together, combine TDD and FDD spectrum to deliver higher peak data speeds and improve the network performance. It also ensures efficient utilization of spectrum, increasing both the combined FDD-TDD coverage area and capacity of the network. Ericsson is working with mobile eco-system partners to support the full commercialization of the LTE FDD- TDD Carrier Aggregation capability. Commercial devices supporting FDD-TDD Carrier Aggregation are expected in Leading FDD-TDD convergence 9

Industry Nokia Released New Solution to Enrich Flexi Zone Nokia released new innovations a double-capacity small cell base station Flexi Zone G2 Pico, and an indoor planning service enhanced by 3-D geolocation. The launches, which expand the Nokia Networks small cell portfolio, enable operators to costeffectively build even higher performance HetNets in dense urban areas, sustaining high quality mobile broadband for more subscribers and higher data traffic. 11 The new Pico solution will be based on the Nokia Flexi Zone G2 Micro/Pico base station platform that features a 4-pipe radio and twice the processing capability of the Flexi Zone Micro/Pico base station. This provides scope for other future variants in support of very high performance HetNets. Similar to other Flexi Zone base stations, Flexi Zone G2 Pico BTS offers full software and feature parity of Nokia Networks macro base stations and packs the same Smart Scheduler and HetNet interference management features for best-in-class performance. Likewise, Flexi Zone G2 Pico BTS can also be used as a stand alone unit or paired with Nokia s Flexi Zone Controller to create large small cell clusters that act as one enodeb. This unique architecture allows operators to scale up to ultra-dense networks for even higher capacity and reduced total cost of ownership. With the continuous growth in data usage, many operators are choosing this innovative high capacity small cell solution to boost performance in hot spots and hot zones. Vodafone Group has selected Nokia Networks as a global supplier of its LTE and Wi-Fi outdoor small cells products, to provide additional capacity where it is needed most. More effective network planning and optimization is enabled by a further portfolio innovation: 3-D geolocationbased HetNet planning for in-building solutions. Nokia Networks is applying newly acquired 3-D geolocation technology to pinpoint precise locations in high-rise buildings that have high demand or are suffering poor service, such as dropped calls or slow connectivity. Extending the Nokia Services for HetNets portfolio, the service overcomes the limitations of conventional twodimensional planning that cannot distinguish between the different floors of buildings with different needs, such as a corporate offices and residential spaces. This will help operators deliver the best mobile broadband experience indoors.

Industry Samsung and Alpha Wireless Cooperated on Next Generation Antenna Solution Building a 4G network to service the increasing demands of users and applications needs close attention to all aspects of network design. An often neglected component is the antenna, and it is sometimes thought that any antennas will do! However careful antenna design and selection can greatly improve the quality and speed of a network. In 2013, when Samsung was designing a new network for a major US operator using Band 41 (2.5GHz), a beamforming antenna was a key requirement, and Samsung worked closely with Alpha Wireless to develop this need. A beamforming antenna has the characteristics of a regular sector antenna with a 65 or 90 beamwidth. This implementation uses a 4 column array and an internal calibration network which enables the beamforming capabilities of the Samsung radio. In addition to the main beam, multiple narrow service beams can be generated and can be directed to individual users within the sector, therefore focussing coverage on areas of high demand. The radio uses channel information to calculate weights to form the beam and direct it towards the subscriber equipment thus improving the Signal-Interference-Noise-Ratio (SINR). Using this approach network speeds of greater than 1Gbps are achievable. The antenna utilises 8T8R and as well as improving network speeds, Beamforming also offers the following benefits: Higher SINR giving greater range and indoor penetration. Interference avoidance and rejection through the use of a nulling technique on the service beam. Less antennas are required which greatly reduces tower leasing costs. Coupled with the Samsung Radio, 1000 s of these antennas are now deployed throughout the USA. 12

Industry Nokia Uniquely Developed Smart Scheduler Mechanism to Approach Better Cell Edge Data Rate and Capacity We all engage in time domain based scheduling blocking parcels of time between family, work, leisure, travel, etc. Similarly, an LTE base station also has to schedule its precious radio frequency resources between its hundreds of users. Scheduler software is thus installed in the base station and utilizes time and frequency domain scheduling, allotting both between its users. The radio frequency resources are needed for setting up calls or data sessions, ending calls, downloading and uploading data, and so on. The best part of it all? Nokia s Smart Scheduler is known to deliver up to 100% better cell edge data rate and up to 20% more capacity compared to standard industry-compliant LTE Schedulers. Nokia Smart Scheduler s proven, real-world performances include many mass events, where it has been tested to the extreme. One such recent event was in Shanghai at a world-class motor race event with close to 200,000 spectators taking part in the 3-day spectacle. China Mobile and Nokia Networks provided the reliable TD-LTE coverage, which required call setup requests from thousands of users, as well as high data download and upload. Nokia s Smart Scheduler has evolved to provide coordinated scheduling, whereby our Flexi Multiradio 10 Base Stations coordinate with neighboring base stations especially with regards to users at the cell edge. This way, operators can save radio frequency resources, reduce interference, and improve customer experience. As stated, Nokia s coordinated scheduling approach for multiple cells is unique in the industry. It is proven to deliver great results for the entire network, doesn t require a change in architecture or additional hardware, and can be implemented with a simple software update.
