14 Districtwise Agromet Advisories Chennai, Kancheepuram, Villupuram, Thiruvannamalai, Thiruvallur, Vellore & Cuddalore Livestock: 1. Light to moderate rainfall may be expected for next four day. 2. Farmers are advised to avoid stagnation of water nearby animal shed to prevent multiplication of vectors and to control spreading of disease. 3. Young calves, lambs and kids should be protected from rain.
15 4. Due to expected rainfall farmers are advised to protect their feed ingredients to avoid development of aflatoxin. 5. To control fluke infestation, animal should not be allowed to graze near ponds and lakes. 6. Farmers are advised to vaccinate their cattle, sheep and goats against anthrax disease in the endemic areas by consulting with local Veterinary Dispensary. 7. Sheep and goats should be dewormed by using suitable anthelminthic by consulting with local veterinary doctor. 8. Farmers are advised to wash and clean the udder before milking and not to provide dusty roughage immediately after milking to avoid mastitis. Agriculture (Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kattupakkam) Imp. Crops: Rice, Sugarcane and Groundnut 1. Due to expected rainfall farmers are advised to postpone the application of fertilizer and pesticide to their crops. 2. The root zone of horticulture crops are covered with coir pith to conserve moisture. Karaikal & Puducherry Weather based Agro-Advisories Apply one tonne of well decomposed FYM or compost for 20 cents of nursery. Treat the seeds with Carbendazim or Pyroquilon or 2 g/ kg of seed. Soak the seeds in water for 10 hrs and drain the excess water. Treat the seeds with three packets (600 g/ha) of Azospirillum and 3 packets (600g/ha) of Phosphobacteria or 6 packets (1200g/ha) of Azophos and then taken up sowing. To manage weeds in nursery apply Prtilachlor g/ha at 3 DAS; keeping thin film of water and later allows it to disappear. Dindigul Weather Based Agro-Advisories Imp. Crops: Cotton, Maize, Onion, Vegetables, Banana and Sugarcane Stage: Cotton, Maize: Land preparation. Keeping weather condition in view, farmers are advised for sowing of cotton and maize crops in prepared fields on raised bed.! In the sugarcane crops spray potash and urea each at 2.5% level during moisture stress (water shortage) period at 15days interval.! Brown spot incidence was found in paddy crop. Hence farmers are advised to spray mancozeb 2g/lit and 2 to3 times at days intervals. In the sugarcane crops spray potash and urea each at 2.5% level during moisture stress (water shortage) period at 15days interval. Since the Relative Humidity is anticipated to be high along with rainfall, feed animals with dried concentrates. Ramanathapuram Weather Based Agro-Advisories Imp. Crops: Paddy, Cotton and Sugarcane Stage: Cotton: Land preparation Keeping weather condition in view, farmers are advised for sowing of cotton crops in prepared fields on raised bed. Nammakal,Dharmapuri,Salem & Krishnagiri A) Special Weather Advisory Bulletin for Dairy and Poultry Farming: 1. For next four days, sky will be generally cloudy with chance of isolated rainfall. Maximum and minimum temperature will be 34.0 C (93.2 F) and 24 C (75.2 F) respectively. Wind speed will be around 4 km/hour, mostly from west. Relative humidity will be in the range of 64-82%. 2. Southwest monsoon is active over North and north western region of Tamil Nadu. Due to this, a moderate level of rainfall is expected in few places of Namakkal district. The prevailing temperatures will be very conducive for production in poultry. However, it is observed that feeds have been found to contain aflatoxin in appreciable quantities. Hence, testing of raw materials used for manufacturing feeds, especially cereals, is to be followed stringently. 3. Post mortem observations in the birds brought for diagnostic purpose at Poultry Disease Diagnosis and Surveillance Laboratory, VC & RI, Namakkal revealed death of birds due to upper respiratory tract infection and E. coli infection. Hence, farmers are advised to follow appropriate bio-security measures. Test feed and drinking water for E. coli load at this laboratory and use appropriate sanitizers. Agroadvisory: The leaf roller and bod bore is a common problem in the groundnut and pulses due to current weather scenario. So farmers are advised to monitor their crops daily to assess the incident. If the incident level is more than the two economic threshold 1-2 larvae/plant, farmers can go for spraying of botanical based
18 chemical 5 ml litter of water or 10 ml/acre and setting up of pheromone 5 no/acre. Kanyakumari Basin preparation for pepper, clove, nutmeg and cinnamon may be taken for better rain water harvest. Since the jasmine plants are in flowering stage irrigation has to be provided. Organic fertilizer may be given to the spices, if proper irrigation facilities are available. 20 Nilgiris Heavy to moderate rainfall is expected in the district for the next five days. In pepper plantation, 1% DAP spray may be given on leaves to prevent spike drop and for enhanced yield. In Gudalur region, for Arecanut plantation, 220 grams Urea, 220 grams Super phosphate and 230 grams potash may be given per tree in the post monsoon period Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Karur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur & Thiruchirapalli Crop: Rice, Black gram, Sugarcane, Cotton Stage: Kuruvai - Panicle initiation stage; Samba: Land preparation and sowing Field preparation has to be done for samba season paddy crop by utilizing the last week rainfall. For direct sown rice in samba season, sowing by using tractor drawn seed drill, seed rate of 15 kg/acre is required. For manual broadcasting seed rate of 30 kg/acre is required. Seeds should be treated with Pseudomonas fluorescense 10g/kg of seed before sowing. Seed treatment increase seed germination, seedling vigour and controls the seed borne disease. For 1 acre Samba crop, apply 200 kg of gypsum, 10 kg of zinc sulphate, 15 kg of urea, 40 kg DAP and 10 kg of potash as basal fertilizers. Apply 100 kg of neem cake before transplanting to avoid insect and nematode attack.
