MOOREX mooring system The peace-of-mind mooring system

Modern ships are difficult to moor safely Ship sizes grow but berths and mooring arrangements remain the same as before. Operators often face the problem of mooring their vessels safely. Safe mooring is essential for the safety of passengers, crew, cargo, ships and harbour constructions. What s the problem? Traditional mooring stations located on high decks and short berths lead to ineffective rope angles that t are not always able to ensure that t vessels are reliably moored to the quay. Forces caused by passing ships, wind, suction and swell are complex and vary continually. If the vessel moves sideways in its berth the ramp and gangway positioning become unsafe. Large movements of the vessel may cause damage to gangways, ramps, linkspans and harbour constructions. Problem Large wind surfaces cause high mooring forces To control and evenly distribute mooring load L-type quays are often too short Unfavourable/ineffective mooring rope angles Need for several auto-tensioning mooring winches Loss of mooring force Broken mooring ropes Unreliable use of passenger gangways, ramps and linkspans Many mooring ropes needed in bow and stern Risky working environment Adjustment of ropes according to changing quay heights and weather conditions Reason > Size of vessel > Number of mooring ropes in various angles > Length of vessel > Height of mooring decks > Number of mooring ropes > Friction in hawses and fairleads > Wear and tear, sharp rope angles in hawses, overloaded mooring ropes > Movements of vessel > Manpower and time-consuming operations > Handling of heavy ropes on open deck > Frequently changing mooring conditions MacGregor MOOREX mooring system will completely or partly eliminate the problems. 2

Cargotec s commitment for increased safety: MacGregor MOOREX mooring system MacGregor MOOREX self-tensioning mooring arrangement, placed on the quay or onboard, at an optimal rope angle and longitudinal position thus keeping the vessel safely moored alongside both longitudinally and athwartships even in difficult weather and tidal conditions. MOOREX enables fast mooring operations even in short harbour stops and reduces the need of the crew to supervise possible movements of the vessel. MOOREX on the quay side Main benefits Increases mooring safety Sufficient self-tensioning mooring force for optimal rope angle and position Same device can serve many vessels, especially in line traffic Fast, easy and reliable mooring operations Allows for safe, precise operation of gangways and linkspans connected to the vessel Reduces wear and tear of side, bow and stern ramps Helps berthing in ice conditions Saves space onboard Reduces the need to use traditional mooring ropes Reduces manpower needed in mooring operations Reduces damage on the quay Especially handy at short harbour stops Reduced need for continuous surveillance and adjustment of mooring ropes Typical main characheristics Pulling force at self-tensioning: specified between kn/rope Pulling length: according to need MOOREX quay side units are compact and tidy installations and save space onboard. Safety In case of malfunction of the MOOREX unit, information is transmitted to the ship s alarm system. Capacity MOOREX is available from 10 to 60 tonne capacity when placed on the quay side. A strong MOOREX bollard is installed flush with the ship s side. MOOREX mooring rope angles are always optimal, rope forces remain high, and the ship keeps its position accurately. 3

Peace-of-mind mooring secured by MacGregor MOOREX MOOREX on the quay side provides accurate mooring even in short berths and allows safe utilisation of ramps and gangways even in difficult weather conditions. The mooring power of MOOREX quay side units can be compared to harbour tugs continuously pushing the vessel against the quay fenders. TRADITIONAL MOOREX With MOOREX quay side units, the mooring rope angles are always optimal, rope forces remain high, and the ship keeps its position accurately. 4

MOOREX in Vuosaari port Vuosaari port in Helsinki Two 60 tonne MOOREX quay side units were installed in 2008 in Vuosaari port for Finnlines Plc. Vuosaari port is specially configured to satisfy the requirements of a variety of ship operations. Automatic traffic and access control using the latest technology ensures the most efficient non-stop flow of goods and cargo from ship to shore. Port systems are therefore designed to maintain a continuous movement of cargo. MOOREX secures large ferries alongside short quays in the port of Basques and North Sydney Eight 35-tonne capacity MacGregor MOOREX units and eight ship side mooring bollards were installed. Increased mooring capacity with quay side MOOREX The new vessels chartered by the Canadian company Marine Atlantic are significantly longer than their existing vessels and require increased mooring capacity. Cargotec has supplied quay side MacGregor MOOREX units, placed vertically to the ship s side and corresponding mooring bollards set into the side shell of the vessel. The MOOREX units were installed to increase the mooring capacity, maintaining a constant tension on the mooring rope and keeping the vessel in position. Each 35-tonne MOOREX unit consists of a pulling device frame with jigger winch and a separate room for hydraulic and electric equipment. 5

MOOREX onboard MOOREX onboard is the flexible option, in the event a vessel changes route, systems immediately become available as soon as shore bollards are installed at the new port of call. Two units are located within the hull structure and prior to the operation wires are manoeuvred through small watertight openings in the hull and attached to shore bollards. Once activated, MOOREX onboard auto-adjusts to any ship movement maintaining constant tension. Two units are normally sufficient to ensure the appropriate pulling force. MOOREX onboard equipped with a weathertight side shell door. MOOREX doors can be opened inwards or outwards. 6
