2 Lighting Considerations A well-designed lighting system is a critical success factor to a profitable parking facility. Consider the following when addressing your lighting needs: Proper illumination levels. Provide adequate illumination in various areas of the parking facility depending on the task conducted. Higher light levels are needed where activity is higher or where vehicular and pedestrian traffic may cross, such as drop-off zones or entrances. Excessive illumination is unnecessary and wastes energy. Optical control. Create an atmosphere of excellent visibility by lighting vertical surfaces to note potential obstacles, such as changes in elevation or traffic intersections. Well placed luminaires with appropriate photometric distributions avoid glare for drivers and pedestrians and eliminate dark areas where intruders might hide. Good vertical illumination allows quick identification of objects and people, as well as proper imaging by surveillance systems, and also minimizes contrast between bright light sources and adjacent walls or surfaces. Color quality. Select light sources with good color rendering properties. This facilitates the quick identification of one s own vehicle, as well as other pedestrians. When unfortunate incidents do occur, the accurate description of an object or person may lead to rapid resolution to a criminal event. Technology selection. Selecting energy-efficient and long life lighting systems decrease operating costs for parking facilities and project the image of a well-maintained business. Not only do utility bills decrease, but labor costs to replace lamps or maintain luminaires are also reduced, both positively impacting the bottom line. Controls strategy. A smart lighting control strategy can help a parking facility save energy, while creating a more comfortable structure for visitors. Luminaires may be dimmed during the day when natural light is available, particularly in perimeter areas. Lighting in transition areas, such as entrances and exits, may be programmed to assist in visual adaptation, particularly when entering from bright sunlight. Occupancy sensors and time scheduling may be incorporated where volume varies greatly by time of day or between weekday and weekend hours. Bi-level switching triggered by occupancy sensors may also be used as a way to highlight activity as part of a crime prevention program. Wayfinding and signage. Lighting can be a fun and creative way to help direct traffic through a space. Using visual cues, such as signs, colors, or lines of light, can be an extremely effective way to highlight certain key areas, such as parking zone identification, elevator lobbies, stairwells, payment kiosks, and exits. Speedy flow and transaction times contribute to increasing one s sense of security in a parking facility.
3 OSRAM SYLVANIA LED SOLUTIONS FOR PARKING FACILITIES Drive greater user comfort and security and greater savings for you. Parking facilities can contribute a great deal to the revenue of a business or a community, particularly if there is paid parking, and are often a key consideration in urban revitalization programs. Visitors and consumers are more likely to frequent an area if they feel assured of finding readily accessible parking where they feel safe and secure. Prospective tenants are more likely to occupy a building or neighborhood where they, their employees or their visitors can easily find secure parking nearby. First impressions A parking facility often creates the first impression to a business or neighborhood. A welcoming, well-maintained structure is easy to find, simple to navigate, and creates an inviting feeling of comfort and security. Interior and exterior spaces should reinforce the corporate or community image. Crime prevention Limiting liability is best done through effective crime prevention programs. Creating an environment where actions are widely visible from long distances is important. Surveillance systems not only allow monitoring of activities to deter crimes, but they are also necessary to support the apprehension of criminals. Lighting in a parking facility is crucial to creating a safe environment for vehicles, pedestrians, and property owners, and can be the first line of defense against assault, theft and vandalism. Profitable operation Good business practice calls for increasing revenue while decreasing operating costs. An attractive, welcoming parking facility draws more customers, which can be strongly influenced by excellent lighting design. Energy-efficient, long life lighting equipment decreases utility bills, as well as the need to conduct frequent maintenance or repairs. In some cases, this may also lead to the reduction or reallocation of labor. Sustainability In addition to energy-efficiency objectives, many corporate and community sustainability programs have been adopted to address other environmental issues. Among these are light trespass and Dark Sky initiatives. By selecting light fixtures with efficient optics, directing the light output effectively, the amount of light spilling across property boundaries or up into the night sky can be limited or even eliminated, often required by local ordinances. Accommodation for alternate transportation, greenpowered motor vehicles, and electric vehicle charging stations may also be provided to support green building programs, guidelines and design. Barbara Chance of Chance Management Advisors, said: Parking garages have had an undeserved bad name as locations for crime. Better garage designs by parking professionals (using principles such as those found in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design), improved and appropriate lighting, and more attention to the needs of pedestrians have helped to reduce crime and improve perceptions of the environment found in well-designed garages. excerpt from the article: Parking Vs. Pop Culture Gritty Crime and the Parking Garage by Isaiah Mouw and Ben Bronsink

5 Developing the right solution for your facility Advances in LED light sources and controls have resulted in the ability to integrate these technologies into an ideal strategy to meet your business goals. A well-designed LED lighting system has multiple benefits, particularly when compared to metal halide or high pressure sodium systems. Not only will you save more than 50% in costs upfront, optional smart controls will increase those savings by 20%. Factor in utility rebates and your total energy costs will be reduced even further. Combining any of these lighting solutions will create a parking program that boosts your bottom line for years to come. Light quality LEDs produce a broad spectrum, bright light whose color remains consistent throughout the life of the system. The excellent color rendering enables one to accurately distinguish colors, helpful when searching for a vehicle in a crowded garage or identifying people. High reliability As electronic components, LED light sources have extremely long service lives, typically around 50,000 hours (L70), which is 2 to 3 times longer than many technologies it can replace. With no filaments, LED light sources are extremely durable, withstanding vibrations often experienced in parking garages. These long lifetimes not only save on replacement lamps, but also permit a reduction in labor to maintain the lighting systems. Whether in your sign or parking bay, you can count on your LED lighting system to support your reputation and customers. Illumination efficiency Not only does LED technology produce light efficiently, but due to their directional nature, they put light exactly where needed. Whether as a lamp or luminaire, the optical efficiency of a welldesigned LED system means less light is necessary to create the same safe feeling of a well-illuminated space. In exterior applications, this means uncontrolled light is not lost or left to create an annoyance for neighbors. Sustainability LEDs contain no mercury or lead. Their long life and energy efficiency results in the use of fewer natural resources and a reduction of power plant emissions. With proper luminaire selection, LED technology can help to avoid light trespass and sky glow, minimizing light pollution. Temperature insensitivity Many parking facilities are unconditioned spaces, and may get quite cold during winter months. This often leads to reduced output for sources, such as fluorescent lamps. LEDs thrive in cold temperatures, thus no loss of efficiency and do not require special luminaires to retain heat. Controllability With no gas discharge required to create light, LED light sources are easily controlled and may be switched on and off with no warm-up time or hot restrike issue. They may also be dimmed across a wide range with the proper control equipment. This allows a much greater flexibility in control strategies focusing on improving comfort and reducing energy consumption, such as the use of occupancy sensors or dimming controls. Why install lighting controls? Lighting controls can dim or turn off the lights when a space is unoccupied, provide flexible light levels for varying traffic patterns and overall comfort, and decrease the electric lighting when adequate natural daylight is available. These controls can reduce the overall demand for lighting energy by up to 70%, lowering your electric bills and maintenance costs.
