Approval Content The syllabus for the course was approved by the Programme Committee for the Undergraduate Medical Programme on 30 January 2007 and is valid from 1 July Adult Psychiatry This course comprises of basic psychopathology, diagnostics, psychopharmacology, elderly psychiatry, addiction, psychoses, mood disorders, panic disorders, eating disorders, somatoform disorders, suicidology, forensic psychiatry, basic neuropsychology and basic terms and methods within psychotherapy. Care outside the hospital Care outside the hospital comprises working with supervision in primary care, with general medical
2 application of the clinical subjects that have been studied so far during the medical training. Attention is drawn to the significance of mental, social and sex/gender factors in health. Medical conditions and the importance of diagnosis and treatment will be highlighted. Attention is also drawn to the medical decision-making process from a theoretical and practical perspective. Global Health Global health aims to orient students in the global health situation. Why does the international disease scope look as it does today, where is development going and what can be done and not done to improve the health situation in the countries where health is poorest. The subjects that will be handled, among others, include demographical and epidemiological translation, children s health, sexual and reproductive health, scope of health in the world, international health politics, poverty and health as well as questions relating to how health and medical care is financed. Expected study results Meet and communicate with patients, relatives and staff Examine patients, document and analyse symptoms and clinical findings Diagnose and treat relevant conditions within the specialities Describe the law and regulations applicable within these specialist fields Identify and evaluate ethical problems in medical practice Analyse clinical situations from a cultural and gender perspective Adult Psychiatry Describe principles and establish knowledge within the aetiology and pathogenesis of psychiatric diseases
3 Explain the relationship between genetic, other biological, psychological and social factors in the development of mental illness Describe and discuss psychiatric ill-health and prevention in a society and gender perspective Perform preliminary evaluations, plan treatments and document medical records Have a doctor-patient consultation which includes medical history taking and mental state examination Investigate, diagnose, treat, rehabilitate and take care of patients with mental disorders Explain the law regulating compulsory psychiatric care (LPT) and its applications Explain the basics of Forensic Psychiatry Care outside the hospital Diagnose, examine, treat and rehabilitate patients with non-selective diseases in doctor s surgeries in rural and urban areas on a basic level Supervise patients with symptoms lacking a definite medical diagnosis Prioritize and judge the level of care for different groups of patients seeking outpatient care Apply evidence based knowledge when meeting individual patients Explain the significance of continuity and the holistic perspective in contact with those seeking care and their relatives Explain the consultation s possibilities and limitations in preventive as well as welfare work Explain individual prevention and public health work in primary care Analyse one s own observations during a patient consultation in relation to the medical literature and describe the medical decision process and apply it to a clinical setting
4 Admission qualifications Teaching structure Global health Outline the global health situation, how it came about that the international disease scope looks as it does today, in which direction development is progressing and what can be done to improve the health situation in the countries where health is the poorest. Describe the basic demographical terms (demographic and epidemiological transitions) measured in health, and health determinants which are used in international settings (global burden of disease, DALY) as well as the disease scope and the development of diseases globally Outline the economic development theories and overview of the financial development relating to the health development globally Outline priorities in so far as prevention and treatment of the most important diseases among adults and children in a global perspective Outline variations in reproduction and sexual health in the world, health policy as well as pharmaceutical policy and organisation and financing of health care in other countries Describe the big international health and humanitarian aid organisations and their work (WHO, UNICEF, WB, Red Cross, Doctors without borders etc), NGO as well as international agreements within health care area Outline how medical training looks like internationally Clinical Basic Course 1 (MEDC62), Clinical Basic Course 2 (MEDC81), Professional Development, term 7 (MEDA70), Professional Development, term 8 (MEDA70), or equivalent. Attendance at roll-call as well as participation in all parts of the course, demonstrations and clinical training, with the exception of lectures, is obligatory.
5 Psychiatry Student-active teaching methods are used. This includes seminars based on case descriptions, group exercises, clinical conferences, demonstrations and lectures. During the course, students will be trained to meet and communicated with patients and other staff. They will also be trained to examine patients. Furthermore, students carry out practical training on psychiatric wards at NUS or at other psychiatric clinics within or outside the region. On-call (being on duty) can occur. Outpatient Health Care Student-active teaching methods are used. This will include case, lectures, seminars and personal work with associated groups and case exercises. Attendance at case/seminars and group work is obligatory. Clinical training at Health Care Clinics in the northern region for some courses may be given in English. Global Health Student-active teaching methods are used in the form of lectures and country-based case with supervision given by persons from respective country. Attendance at all parts of the course, with the exception of lectures, and work training is obligatory. Examination In order to take part in the examination, students must have participated in and completed all obligatory parts of the course. During examination the student s theoretical knowledge and ability to meet, examine and communicate with patients will be taken into account. Additionally, the student s ability to meet and communicate with other staff will be taken into consideration. The examination is written and/or oral. Examination takes place continuously during the course and/or at the end of the course.
6 The course can be examined at a scheduled examination with a re-taking soon afterwards. The re-take can be written or oral. In the case of failure, students are referred to the next scheduled examination at the beginning of the next term. A student that has failed an examination is allowed to take it again five times in order to pass. After four failures, the student is invited to re-take the course. Students who re-take the course and fail the scheduled examination, and then fail on additional occasion, must terminate their studies. Re-take examinations based on the same syllabus as the scheduled examination are guaranteed for at least two years after the student has been first registered. A student who has taken two exams for a course or course part, without passing, has the right, after written request to the Programme Committee, to be appointed another examiner if there are no particular reasons against it. In order to pass the course, the student must have obtained a pass in the clinical training, attended all obligatory parts of the course and passed the examination. Accreditation Course literature Decisions regarding accreditation are made by the Programme Committee after consultation with the course coordinator. Application for course accreditation should be made in writing and it should include relevant information about the course/part of course. Certified copies of course certificates or equivalent for the course that the accreditation is requested, date, subject area, level, number of ECTS and grading must be submitted together with the application.
