1 CITY OF CHICO PARK DEPARTMENT DROUGHT TOLERANT PLANT LIST for Public Right-of-Way, Parks and Other Public Facilities
2 CITY OF CHICO DROUGHT TOLERANT PLANT LIST PREFACE The Drought Tolerant Plant List is intended as a guide to help landscape professionals identify irrigation water needs for landscape plant species. It can be used either for the selection of species when designing hydro-zones, or to assist in developing irrigation schedules for existing landscapes. The list is divided by plant type; i.e. tree, shrub, perennial, palms and grasses. The plants were selected for their low water usage and drought tolerance sustainablility. Butte County and California native plants were given first priority because of their proven performance in local soil and climate conditions. Native plants with aggressive or invasive reproductive habits, and poisonous plant structures were removed from the list. Other non-native plants were selected because of their ability to adapt to the local environment, non-invasive reproductive nature, and low water usage. Water requirements for each plant, if available, were obtained from the WUCOLS Species List (Water Use Classification of Landscape Species). The Seventh edition of Sunset Western Garden, Ornamental Plants by D. Dwight Wait, Manual of the Vascular Plants of Butte County by Vernon H. Oswald, and the Plant Master 5.0 software provided other sources of water usage for those plants not on the WUCOLS list. The evaluations of irrigation water requirements should not be considered absolute and are not intended to be used as such. The evaluations are based upon the best information available at the time using the average conditions in Chico. Microclimate variations within the Chico area will affect the water usage and the hardiness of each species listed. The landscape designer must take these factors into consideration when choosing plants form this list The soils of Chico play an important role in the success of public landscape projects. Proper water drainage in clayey soils is critical to healthy plant growth. Heavily compacted soil or soils with a high clay content typically limit the movement of oxygen to only a few inches of the surface. To minimize the compaction potential, adequate soil preparation is essential. Proper soil preparation not only fosters deeper root systems, it provides adequate growing conditions, leading to healthier plants. In areas of compacted Tuscan or Redding clay soils, soil removal to a depth of thirty inches and replacement with Vina clay loam will be necessary to facilitate plant growth. Compacted Vina loam soils may be scarified to a depth of twenty four inches. Once the soil is scarified, it is critical the soil not be recompacted. This list is not created in part or in entirety to restrict species selection to only those species listed here. Plant introductions are dynamic in nature. It is the responsibility of the landscape designer to provide the necessary information for plant approval where plants not shown on the list are used in a landscape application. In keeping with the dynamic nature of plant introductions, this list may be updated from time to time to reflect such introductions and use patterns.
