1 Portfolio Joost Grootens Joost Grootens studied architectural design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam from 1990 to After completing his final project an interactive cd-rom on the complexity of architectural representation Grootens went on to create his own studio. Between 1995 and 2000, he completed a number of projects in the fields of architecture, interactive media and public space marked a turning point during which he designed his first book Metaspaces, published by Black Dog Publishers in London. Since 2000, he has almost exclusively designed books specializing in the fields of architecture, urban space and art. In recent years, he has worked on atlas projects, designing both the maps and the books themselves. Among his clients are 010 Publishers Rotterdam, Episode Publishers Rotterdam, Nai Publishers Rotterdam, Black Dog Publishers London, Garden City Publishers Taipei and Springer Verlag Vienna. Grootens has won numerous prizes for his designs. Among them: Best Dutch Book Design for three different books. He won the Gold Medal in the Schönste Bücher aus aller Welt 2006 competition in Leipzig and the Dutch Design Award 2006 for Graphic Design. One of his book designs was recently awarded the Red Dot: Best of the Best award. He is a lecturer of the Master s program at the Design Academy Eindhoven. He has also lectured at various schools in the Netherlands such as the Berlage Institute Rotterdam. Additionally, he has conducted workshops at institutions in England, Japan, China and Taiwan. 2 Metropolitan World Atlas Arjen van Susteren 312 pp 168 x 210 mm 010 Publishers, Rotterdam 2005 Best Dutch Book Design 2005 Gold Medal Schönste Bücher aus aller Welt 2006 Dutch Design Award 2006 Graphic Design Red dot: best of the best award 2006 The Metropolitan World Atlas documents a total of 101 metropolises and analyses them through a combination of same-scale ground plans and statistics, with categories ranging from population density to data traffic to air pollution. In order for readers to understand the information intuitively, a system of orange dots is introduced, varying in size to visually represent how a given city compares to others in any category. World data maps of these statistics offer additional visual comparisons. Maps were interpreted and designed based on renderings found on the internet.

3 Limes Atlas Bernard Colenbrander, MUST 208 pp 240 x 285 mm 010 Publishers, Rotterdam 2005 Best Dutch Book Design 2005 This atlas traces the northern boundary (limes) of the Roman empire and follows its path in three Dutch cities: Nijmegen, Utrecht and Leiden. Referencing classical atlases, this book provides an indepth study of how the Dutch landscape was shaped since the Roman empire by providing same scale maps of cities, regions and the country in the years 200, 1200, 1600, 1900 and 2000 The atlas uses a carefully studied color palette, including gold for all areas on the maps that represent real findings of the limes, as well as Roman old roads and fortresses. Custom patterns were designed for the maps.

4 At Work Neutelings Riedijk Architects 400 pp 240 x 285 mm 010 Publishers, Rotterdam 2003 At Work documents 10 years of projects by one of the Netherlands most renowned architecture offices, Neutelings Riedijk Architects. The book, arranged in themes, follows a logic which consistently uses the left page to show parts of the whole presented on the facing page. These pages, printed in black and white, contrast with the end of each section, which is in full color on glossy paper.

5 Zakboek voor de woonomgeving Willemijn Wilms Floet, Esther Gramsbergen 512 pp 120 x 165 mm 010 Publishers, Rotterdam 2001 This small pocket book documents different kinds of living environments/ urban areas in the Netherlands. Each section is introduced with a map, an aerial view of the area and floor plans of the houses there. All plans are shown at the same scale so as to allow comparisons between the different living environments presented. Diagrammatic drawings then illustrate the information graphically to offer clear comparisons, creating a system that makes navigating information easy. To add to the idea that this is a pocket book manual, horizontal photos are given a full page, encouraging readers to turn it around and really use it as the practical object it was designed to be.

6 Dispersion. A Study of Global Mobility and the Dynamics of a Fictional Urbanism Diego Barajas 160 pp 145 x 215 mm Episode Publishers, Rotterdam 2003 Documents the Cape Verdic community in Rotterdam, especially the phenomenon of the belhuis (calling center) in Rotterdam. Through charts, photographs and text, the book tracees and explores the different characters of these spaces used mostly by immigrants to call home. The centers often visually mimic homeland characteristics of those running it. Printed on glossy paper, the book has the appearance of a hybrid between a scientific publication and a magazine or travel brochure, evoking many of the atmospheres present within the call centers themselves.

7 Metaspaces Raoul Bunschoten/CHORA 240 pp 165 x 220 mm Garden City Publishers, Taipei 2004 Extended edition of: Metaspaces Raoul Bunschoten/CHORA 64 pp 165 x 220 mm Black Dog Publishers, London 1998 The work of architect and urban designer Raoul Bunschoten of CHORA in London focuses on dynamic processes in the city. This book features processes of reading the city through the use of drawings, diagrams and text. It also documents an exhibit of his work and takes the reader through an 80-page photo essay. Using a visual as a starting point, the book weaves text together with a diagrammatic sketch so as to pull the reader into the process of Bunschoten s thinking and his work.

Tekenen en fotografie / Drawing and photography Erik Odijk, Anne Bruggenkamp, Domeniek Ruyters 248 pp 245 x 168 mm 010 Publishers, Rotterdam 2005 This book is an as of yet unexplored take on artist Erik O dijk s work in that it documents the source of his insiration his travels. By juxtaposing landscape photos taken on his trips, the spreads become their own landscapes. The middle portion of the book features texts on the artist, as well as his wall-sized drawings. These pages are printed on a rougher, matt paper to give them the tactilicty of the drawings themselves.

9 Ted Noten. CH 2 =C(CH 3 )C(=O)CH 3 enclosures and other TN's Gert Staal 328 pp 170 x 240 mm 010 Publishers, Rotterdam 2006 Ted Noten is a rebel in the jewellery world. This book does the same in the world of jewelery books. Created out of a pile of thousands of photographs, this book creates compositions, associations, and narratives to illustrate Noten s work. While the bulk of the book is a series of free associations bringing to life Ted Noten s range of work, the back is purely informational. One part presents his work in the form of a catalogue, as well as his contacts in the form of the yellow pages. The concept of the book was developed in close collaboration between the artist, the writer and the designer.
