2 Computers in Our World 2-2 CHAPTER 2: COMPUTERS IN GOVERNMENT, LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND THE MILITARY CHAPTER OVERVIEW This chapter focuses on how computer technology has become indispensable to federal, state, and local governments, law enforcement agencies, homeland security, and the military. The federal government handles the census and electoral process with computer software, and allows citizens to submit electronic tax returns, track social security benefits, and handle mail electronically. Law enforcement officials use computer technology to track evidence, enforce traffic laws, locate stolen goods, find missing children, and route emergency help for any 911 call. Computers are also an integral part of homeland security through the tracking of visitors and surveillance of borders, as well as for crisis management. Finally, the military is constantly developing cutting-edge technologies, such as weapons, devices to explore hostile areas, and training simulations. These technologies often result in everyday commercial applications. Major Topics Computers and the Government The Election Process United States Postal Service Census Bureau Internal Revenue Service Computers in Law Enforcement Tracking Evidence Storing Criminal Records Enforcing Traffic Laws Tracking Stolen Vehicles Finding Missing Children Providing Wireless 911 Computers and Homeland Security Tracking Visitors Managing Crisis Through Collaboration Computers in the Military Deploying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) Using Remote-Controlled Robots Utilizing Precision-Guided Bombs Tracking Troop Movement Using Computer Simulations for Training
3 Computers in Our World 3-3 Chapter 3: Computers in Medicine and Science Chapter Overview This chapter covers the technological advances that have transformed the disciplines of medicine and science. Both of these disciplines require making an assessment about the cause of an occurrence, collecting and analyzing data to understand why the occurrence happened, and then recommending a course of action. Computer technology has completely altered the way in which data is collected, analyzed, communicated, and stored. Computers are useful in the medical field to maintain patient histories, improve patient diagnoses, perform operations, and do medical research. Computers are used in scientific fields for observing and collecting data, as well as for data modeling and simulation. Major Topics Computers in Medicine Maintaining Patient History Managing the Medical Practice Improving Patient Diagnosis and Monitoring Technology in the Operating Room Telemedicine and Telepresence Surgery Medical Research and Training Credibility of Medical Information Computers in Science Observation and Data Collection Data Classification and Analysis Data Modeling and Simulation
