1 1st prize: Energy Efficiency Award 01. HARTING KGaA holistic corporate strategy for systematic reduction of energy consumption. As part of its Initiative EnergieEffizienz, the Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena) the German Energy Agency is awarding the 1st prize in the international Energy Efficiency Award to HARTING KGaA. The competition is run by dena with the support of its premium partners DZ BANK AG, Imtech Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG and Siemens AG and is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). Project description. Since 001, HARTING has operated a consistent energy management system to analyse and successively optimise all energy-consuming equipment. The variety of measures implemented in the past ten years has allowed the company to systematically realise high energy efficiency potentials. The focus of the measures implemented was on fully modernising the heating supply in all plants at the Espelkamp site. That included building new condensing boilers tailored for the requirements, using speed-controlled circulating pumps in the boiler house and the sub-distribution, and installing heat recovery systems in several buildings. Biomethane-fired CHPs were also commissioned in all plants to generate heat and electricity. Energy efficiency measures. Company-wide energy management system Condensing boilers operating demand appropriate, low-nox burner and use of speed-controlled circulation pumps in the boiler house and sub-distribution Switch to 100 percent biomethane supply Installation of heat recovery systems at the compressed air generators and the electroplating facility ventilation system Systematic optimisation of compressed air generation Demand-oriented, energy-efficient cooling supply and use of an outdoor air cooler Energy optimisation of the medium-voltage network, e.g. via new transformers Daylight-dependent control of lighting, motion sensors Figures for the energy efficiency measures implemented. 1 Energy costs 000/year Energy consumption GWh/year CO reduction t/year 1, ,500 1,000 1, ,000 5,190 1, ,500 4, , , ,000 Percentage saving 9 % usage 3.3 GWh/year CO reduction 1,590 t/year costs 37,000/year Investment 1.1 m Return on investment 30 % Before optimisation After optimisation Saving 1 For clarity, the figures are rounded. 2 Jury evaluation. HARTING has been consistently working on optimising all energyconsuming systems for over ten years. This approach is based on a company-wide energy management system which was certified according to DIN EN ISO in January 01. The company is awarded the 1st prize of the Energy Efficiency Award, as it has been implementing activities to increase energy efficiency for many years, and has succeeded in making significant energy savings. The results achieved by HARTING are impressive proof that corporate energy management is worthwhile for companies. The energy management allows energy consumption to be analysed, potential efficiency to be exploited systematically and the effects to be monitored. With our actions we want to encourage further companies to look into climate protection and energy efficiency. Companies can learn a lot from each other. 3 nd prize: Energy Efficiency Award 01. famila-handelsmarkt Kiel GmbH & Co. KG energy-efficient building in the retail sector. As part of its Initiative EnergieEffizienz, the Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena) the German Energy Agency is awarding the nd prize in the international Energy Efficiency Award to famila-handelsmarkt Kiel GmbH & Co. KG. The competition is run by dena with support from its premium partners DZ BANK AG, Imtech Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG and Siemens AG and funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi). Project description. In 008, famila built a shopping centre in Kiel-Wik, whose outstanding feature is an innovative energy concept. The project was part of the building exhibition Innovative Bauausstellung Kiel 008. Numerous energy measures were supported with 00,000 euros from the Schleswig-Holstein Fund. The objective of the design was to minimise the energy consumption of the building and to meet the remaining demand from renewable energy sources. 1 Accordingly, the heating and cooling energy for the retail store is generated by a combined system no conventional heating system is required. The waste heat from the cooling system is used for heating, meeting roughly 90 percent of the entire heating requirements of the building. At very low external temperatures, additional heating is provided by a ground-sourced, switchable heat pump. The ventilation units are equipped with high-efficiency heat-recovery systems. Optimised use of daylight, highly effective reflectors in the sales areas and use of LEDs reduce the energy required for artificial light to a minimum. Energy efficiency measures. Excellent insulation standards and a well-sealed building Combined heating and cooling system, incorporating heat recovery Activated concrete core to cool the building CO -regulated ventilation systems with heat recovery Energy-efficient interior lighting Geothermal energy for heating and use of free cooling Figures for the energy efficiency measures implemented. 4 Jury evaluation. The jury is awarding famila-handelsmarkt Kiel the nd prize of the Energy Efficiency Award for a new department store building, which sets standards for energy-efficient building in the retail sector. Thank to the use of innovative building technology and the high construction standards the department store uses roughly 50 percent less energy than a comparable conventional new building. The project proves the benefit of considering energy efficiency systematically as a key criterion when planning new buildings. The example shows that involving planners and plant manufacturers as well as relying consistently on innovative technologies pays off. The prize-winning project can serve as a model for other retail stores, as the great energy-saving potential in the retail sector has yet to be exploited consistently.
