Chapter 1: Overview Uninterruptible Power Supplies and Environmental Sensors Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and Environmental Sensors are widely deployed in IT environments. A UPS provides reliable power to critical devices. Environmental sensors detect environmental problems that could cause critical devices to fail. Many UPS devices and sensors are SNMP enabled with a MIB and agent that the ehealth software can poll and certify. The ehealth Suite supports a generic set of UPS and Sensor variables in addition to variables for specific brands of this type of equipment. Many devices, such as high end routers, contain environmental sensors for temperature, humidity, power, or fan. Large devices may have multiple sensors of any given type, for example, multiple temperature monitors or multiple fans. There are also devices that are dedicated to environmental monitoring. These support many sensors of multiple types, everything from door sensors, to light, power, and water. Some devices include a built in UPS; others have external UPS devices with built in SNMP agents and a network card that allows them to be managed remotely. A UPS typically monitors input power, the battery, and output power at minimum. How ehealth Monitors These s Because a UPS can have multiple inputs and multiple outputs, we have multiple elements that correspond to those parts. For UPS devices a standard MIB is defined in RFC1628, and many UPS vendors have private MIBs. For environmental sensors there is no standard MIB, but there are many private MIBs, most of which allow us to poll for the value of a sensor. Most also include the ability to send traps when a sensor or the UPS detects a problem. For example we have certified traps for Cisco's ENVMON MIB and the APC MIB. You can monitor these devices using the ehealth system to ensure that your service is performing as expected. When performance does not meet expectations, ehealth reports can help you pinpoint the cause of the problem. For a complete list of certified UPS and Environmental Sensor vendors, refer to the Certification page on the web site. Overview 5
License and Hardware Requirements License and Hardware Requirements The UPS element uses the standard licensing model; each UPS element consumes one element license. To discover your UPS devices and manage them using ehealth, you use the Router discover mode. When ehealth discovers your devices, it associates the UPS element with whatever device to which it is connected. If you run a report on the device with which the UPS is associated, you can drill down to the UPS element. If you run a report on a UPS, you can follow a link to a report on the associated device. Element Overview The ehealth UPS and Environmental Sensor element model supports the following types of devices: Simple UPS Simple Environmental Sensor with Embedded Environmental Sensors Complex UPS with Extra Sensors Simple UPS This standalone, SNMP-manageable UPS device has a battery, one or more input and output power lines, zero, one or more bypass power lines, one or more network interface cards, and an SNMP agent. Figure 1 shows the elements in a simple UPS with a single battery, input line, output line, and optionally a single bypass line. It would normally have a single network interface, but this model does support a UPS with multiple interfaces and/or a CPU. Router Interface Interface CPU UPS Input Line Input Line Bypass Line Bypass Line Output Line Output Line Figure 1 Simple UPS 6 Monitoring UPS s and Environmental Sensors User Guide
License and Hardware Requirements Simple Environmental Sensor Figure 2 shows the elements that model standalone, SNMP-manageable and network-addressable environmental sensor devices. The Rittal CMC 7000 series of environmental sensors are an example of these devices. Router Interface Sensor Sensor Figure 2 Simple Environmental Sensor The model in Figure 2 covers the case of a simple dedicated environmental monitoring device. Such a device generally supports MIB2, a single interface, and one or more environmental sensors. Such a device could have a CPU, or it could have multiple interfaces, but these are rare. An example of an environmental sensor is the RITTAL CMC-TC in certification request with Embedded Environmental Sensors These are dedicated environmental monitoring devices, or devices with embedded environmental sensors. The elements used to model either of these devices are shown in Figure 3. A Cisco router that supports the Cisco environment monitoring MIB is an example of such a device. Note that any kind of device could include environmental monitoring sensors, a router, switch, system, or RAS. Overview 7
License and Hardware Requirements Router, System, or RAS Interface Interface CPU Other element Other element Sensor Sensor Figure 3 with Embedded Environmental Sensors The model in Figure 3 covers a device, such as a router, switch, system, or RAS that also includes environmental sensors within its chassis. These environmental sensors might measure the temperature at different places, or might monitor a pair of redundant power supplies. In both cases, the model is a device with sensor elements associated with it. Examples include the NEC IX2010 with the NEC-Pico MIB, or a Cisco Router with the CISCO-ENVMON MIB. Note that we have partially supported the CISCO-ENVMON MIB in then past by storing temperature, fan, and power status in router CPU elements. This only supports a single sensor of a given type, but the device can have multiple sensors and we currently cannot represent those. To migrate to the new model, we will continue to support the existing temperature, fan, and power status variables in routers and router CPU elements. However, we will create new sensor elements for each distinct sensor in the device. In some future release, we can remove the support for these variables from the router and router CPU elements. Complex UPS with Extra Sensors These are devices with embedded sensors and UPS devices. The elements used to model these devices are shown in Figure 4. Any kind of device can include a UPS and environmental sensor. 8 Monitoring UPS s and Environmental Sensors User Guide
License and Hardware Requirements The model i represents the complete picture, a device, like a router or switch, with an embedded UPS and multiple sensors. If a UPS has multiple batteries, it can be modeled as multiple UPS elements or as a single UPS with multiple battery sensor objects, depending on how the UPS works. Router, System, or RAS Interface Interface CPU UPS Input Line Input Line Bypass Line Bypass Line Output Line Output Line Sensor Sensor Figure 4 Complex UPS with Extra Sensors If every output line gets its power from one battery, then each battery should be considered as a separate UPS. But if the output lines get they power from all of the batteries, it should be modeled as one UPS, with multiple child battery sensor objects. If the complex UPS is embedded in a device with some other function, a router, switch, system, or RAS, the model in Figure 4 will support that case. If the device also has environmental sensors unrelated to the UPS, they are modeled by unparented Sensor elements with a device association to the device element. Element Types Two element types are included in this model: UPS and Sensor. These elements are part of the router technology type, and are generally associated with a device element such as a Router, System, or RAS. association allows for drilldown from the top-level device element to the UPS. Overview 9
License and Hardware Requirements The ehealth system discovers UPS as the parent element. A UPS element models the battery in a UPS, and is the parent of the input, output, and bypass power lines that are part of the UPS. All power line elements are modeled as power line sensor elements. The name of a UPS is normally sysname-ups. If a system has multiple UPS elements, a description or name field is added as in sysname-upsdescr-ups. An example of a upsdescr is the upsidentname MIB variable from the RFC1628 UPS.MIB. The software can discover the following as child elements: Sensor There are many types of Sensors. Each Sensor is a separate element. The statistics supported depend on the sensor type. Power Sensor This element is used to monitor power lines, including following types of lines: UPS Input Power Line UPS Output Power Line UPS Bypass Power Line Power Sensor Monitors power lines or power supplies for devices that don t have UPS. Temperature Sensor Measures air temperature. Humidity Sensor Measures moisture in the air. Fan Sensor Detects if the server s fan is working. Contact Sensors Contact Sensor types include the following: Door Open Sensor Alarms when door or window is opened. Door Closed Sensor Alarms when door is closed. Lock Sensor Alarms when door is unlocked. Generic Contact Sensor This element type should be used only as a last resort. Whenever possible, add a new sensor element type. Note: The name of a sensor is normally sysname-sensorname-env, for example: NYUPS32-InPwr01-ENV. 10 Monitoring UPS s and Environmental Sensors User Guide
Chapter 2: Reporting Available Reports ehealth offers Top N, Trend and At-a-Glance reports for UPS and Environmental Sensor elements. Use these reports to gain insight into the health of your UPS devices and the performance of your Environmental Sensors. To generate these reports, select the variables that represent the data that you want to monitor for each device. At-a-Glance Reports At-a-Glance reports contain a set of pre-defined charts that provide insight into the performance of the elements. The following table lists the charts that are generated for each element. Element Type UPS input Line Charts Time Without Output Power Battery Charge Remain Voltage Battery Temperature Battery Condition Output Line Load Availability Latency Voltage Current Power Frequency Availability Latency Reporting 11
Available Reports Element Type Output Line Bypass Line Charts Voltage Current Power Frequency Output Line Load Availability Latency Voltage Current Power Availability Latency You can use the At-a-Glance reports to compare variables and look for combinations of problems that could indicate problem sources. From At-a-Glance charts, you can drill down to Trend reports and view performance data in greater detail. The ehealth software supports drill downs between the At-a-Glance reports associated with the UPS and Environmental Sensor elements. This allows you to navigate to a higher or lower view for a resource, and enable you to review the performance of related elements. Sample At-a-Glance Report When you run At-a-Glance reports for UPS devices and you choose a Technology, be sure to select one of the device types that UPS devices can be embedded in or connected to, including the following: Router/Switch LAN/WAN LAN Interface Generic LAN This At-a-Glance report displays several charts for the bass:9509 UPS element. The charts show the percentage of time without power, battery charge remaining, and other conditions of the UPS element in the previous 24 hours. The report output also supplies links in the left pane to view charts for additional variables associated with this element. 12 Monitoring UPS s and Environmental Sensors User Guide
Available Reports Trend Reports Trend reports allow you to view more granular data on a particular performance variable or group of variables for an element. You can also view trends over time from both At-a-Glance and Trend reports. Sample Trend Report When you run a Trend report for one of these elements, you select one or more variables. To identify the variables associated with UPS elements, see Supported Trend and Top N Variables on page 15. This Trend report shows battery voltage and battery charge remaining for a two hour period during which there was a power interruption. It can help you determine how well the UPS device performed during the power loss. The report shows that the UPS device provided power for about 40 minutes while maintaining steady voltage, then recharged normally after power was restored. Reporting 13
Available Reports Top N Reports Top N reports provide information on groups of elements. These reports use the same variables as Trend reports, but in addition, they offer information such as peak values. You use this report type when you want to compare variables for multiple elements in a group. For example, you might want to understand which UPS devices have the most Battery Low Time, or show the highest Battery Temperature. When you run Top N reports, you select a pre-defined group of elements and the variables that you want ehealth to compare for each element in that group. ehealth supports numerous drilldowns between the At-a-Glance reports associated with the UPS and Environmental Sensor elements at different levels in the hierarchies. This allows you to navigate to a higher or lower view for the resource that can help you to troubleshoot problems by reviewing the performance of related elements. Sample Top N Report When you run a Top N report, you can select a group of elements for which you want to view common values, and then select up to six variables for comparison. To identify the variables associated with UPS elements, see Supported Trend and Top N Variables on page 15. This Top N report displays the percentage of battery charge remaining for the UPS elements in the selected group. 14 Monitoring UPS s and Environmental Sensors User Guide
Available Reports Supported Trend and Top N Variables The following table lists the supported Trend and Top N variables for the Control Switch and Active Directory elements and their subordinate elements. 16 Available Reports Variable Data Mappings For a complete description of the UPS and Environmental Sensor elements, data mappings, and trendable variables, go to the Certified s Web page on the web site. As a registered user, you can obtain important information about UPS devices and associated Environmental Sensors, such as the following: Available MIB Translation Files (MTFs) General Information Database Column Mappings Polled MIB Variables Trend Variables Figure 5 shows a Certified s page for a UPS element. In addition, you can use the ehealth Element Variable report (available from the ehealth Web interface Organization Page) to obtain detailed information about the Trend variables and polled MIB OIDs for each element. Figure 5 Certified s Page for a UPS Element Figure 6 shows a sample report with the Trend variables for the UPS element. It shows how ehealth combines and evaluates the MIB variables to obtain the data for each Trend variable for the element. 16 Monitoring UPS s and Environmental Sensors User Guide
