7 Chapter 1: Overview The IBM SVC Monitoring probe enables you to monitor the IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC) and IBM V7000 storage systems. The IBM SVC and IBM V7000 are storage virtualization systems which provide the foundation for managing heterogeneous storage resources. The IBM SVC Monitoring probe fetches the following performance data for generating alarms and QoS: CPU Utilization Interfaces: The connection speed of the interfaces with the Fiber Cables (FC), iscsi, and SAS hosts. Volumes: The read and write speed and latency information of the volumes. MDisks: The read write speed and latency information of the MDisks. Note: The performance data is available at both the system and node levels. 9 Chapter 2: Configuration Details The IBM SVC Monitoring probe is configured for enabling and configuring the monitoring checkpoints of IBM SVC Monitoring probe. The probe configuration also includes establishing a communication link between the probe and IBM SVC. This node lets you view the probe information and configure log properties of the IBM SVC Monitoring probe. Navigation: ibm_svc Set or modify the following values as required: ibm_svc > Probe Information This section provides information about the probe name, probe version, start time of the probe, and the vendor who created the probe. ibm_svc > Probe Setup This section lets you configure the default log level for the probe. 10 ibm_svc Node <Resource IP Address> Node The Resource IP Address node displays the resource connection properties and lets you update these properties. The resource properties include IP address of the resource, port, and user authentication details. Navigation: ibm_svc > Resource IP Address Set or modify the following values as required: IP Address > Resource Setup This section lets you edit the resource properties, which are configured while creating a profile. Hostname: defines the host name or the IP address of the IBM SVC. Note: Each IBM SVC system is termed as a resource in the probe. Port: defines the port number on which the (Storage Management Initiative Specification) SMI-S provider is listening. The SMI-S is a standard for managing heterogeneous storage systems in a SAN (Storage Area Network). Default: 5988 Interval (secs): defines the time interval for fetching current value of the monitors. This current value is then compared with the threshold value. Default: 600 Username: defines the user account for accessing the SMI-S provider. Password: defines the password for the given username. Use SSL: allows the probe to use HTTPS for connecting the IBM SVC. NameSpace: identifies the namespace that is supported by the Device Manager and the SMI-S version. Storage Type: specifies the storage type to monitor. The available options are: SVC and V7000. Alarm Message: specifies the alarm message to be issued when the probe is unable to connect with IBM SVC. Default: ResourceCritical 10 Probe Guide for IBM SVC Monitoring

11 ibm_svc Node <IP Address> Node The IP Address node is used for configuring monitors of the IBM SVC Monitoring probe. Monitors generate alarms and the QoS messages depending on the monitoring category. Monitors also enable the probe to fetch the following data about the complete storage system: Discovery Data: Provides information whether the probe connects to the storage system. Configuration Data: Provides information about the storage system classification. For example, the number of clusters and other components. Statistical Data: Provides fetch statistical information of storage system components. For example, total IO operations and read/write latency on virtual disks. The IP Address node lets you configure the following monitors: configurationexecutiontime discoveryexecutiontime statsexecutiontime Navigation: ibm_svc > Resource IP Address > IP Address Set or modify the following values as required: IP Address > configurationexecutiontime This section configures the configurationexecutiontime monitor of the IBM SVC Monitoring probe. Units: Identifies a unit of the monitor. For example, % and Mbytes. Metric Type Id: Identifies the unique identification number of the monitor. Value Definition: Specifies the value type for comparing with the threshold value and then generate alarms. Value type is also used in QoS messages. Specify one of the following values: Current Value Average Value Last n Samples Delta Value (Current - Previous) Delta Per Second Number of Samples: Defines the number of samples for calculating the average value. This field is available for the monitors that have the Value Definition enabled. Chapter 2: Configuration Details 11

12 ibm_svc Node High Operator: Specifies the operator for validating the alarm threshold value. For example, >= 90 means the monitor generates an alarm if the measured value is more than 90. High Threshold: Defines the threshold value for comparing it with the actual value. High Message Name: Specifies the alarm message to be issued when the threshold value is breached. Note: The Low Operator, Low Threshold, and Low Message Name fields are used for configuring low thresholds. Typically, the low threshold generates a warning alarm and the high threshold generates an error alarm. Similarly, you can configure the discoveryexecutiontime and statsexecutiontime monitors also. Clusters Node <Cluster Name> Node The Clusters node is used for classifying the list of arrays, which are available in the IBM SVC. This node does not contain any fields or sections for configuring the monitors of the resource. The Cluster Name node represents the actual cluster name which is available in the IBM SVC. This node contains only the Monitors section which displays a list of monitors for configuring at an array level. Select a monitor in the Monitors section and configure the properties. The monitor properties are same as configured in the IP Address node. The Cluster Name node further contains sub nodes for representing elements of a cluster, which are as follows: Disk Controller Hosts IO Groups MDisk MDisk Groups Nodes Ports VDisk The cluster element nodes further contain sub nodes for configuring monitors of different sections of an element. All element nodes and their corresponding sub nodes contain only the Monitors section. The Monitors section is used for configuring monitors of that IBM SVC component. 12 Probe Guide for IBM SVC Monitoring

13 Add Resource Add Resource You can add the IBM SVC system as a resource under the ibm_svc node to start its monitoring. You can then configure monitors of that resource. Follow these steps: 1. Click the Options icon next to the ibm_svc node in the navigation pane. 2. Click the Add New Profile option. 3. Update the field information and click Submit. Note: Refer to the Resource Setup Information section of the Resource IP Address node for field descriptions. The IP address of the resource is displayed under the ibm_svc node. You can select the IP Address node and configure the monitors. Configure a Monitor This procedure provides information to configure a monitor of IBM SVC Monitoring probe within a node. Each section within the node allows you to configure the properties of the monitor for monitoring IBM SVC. Follow these steps: 1. Select the appropriate navigation path. 2. Update the field information and click Save. The specified monitor of the probe is configured. The probe is now ready to generate alarms and QoS when the monitor threshold is breached. How to Configure Alarm Thresholds Some Quality of Service measurement probes allow you to set different types of alarm thresholds. These threshold options allow you to more broadly control when alarm messages are sent for each QoS probe. For more information about the different alarm thresholds and their configuration requirements, refer to the General Probe Configuration section of the Admin Console Help. Important! Alarm threshold settings are dependent on the baseline_engine probe. If you do not have the correct version of baseline_engine configured, you will not see the additional threshold options. 14 Remove a Resource Remove a Resource You can delete the IBM SVC resource when you do not want to monitor it. Follow these steps: 1. Click the Options icon next to the IP Address node in the navigation pane. 2. Click Delete Profile. 3. Click Save.
