1 New Commands in AutoCAD 2010: Part 8 Lots and Lots of Symbols, Free by Ralph Grabowski Introduction AutoCAD 2010 introduces a new way to access symbols from Autodesk's Web site -- and a way to share yours with other users. (I use the word "symbol" here, instead of block, because the Web site also has symbols for non-autocad software, such as Revit and SketchUp.) In this tutorial, you access the Seek Web site. Tutorial: Getting Symbols 1. Start AutoCAD 2010 with a new drawing. 2. Start the Seek command in one of these ways: At the command prompt, enter Seek, or... Click the ribbon's Insert tab, and then choose Seek Design Content button in the Content panel; or... In the DesignCenter palette, click the Autodesk Seek Design Content button. 3. Notice that your computer's default Web browser appears and opens the Autodesk Seek Web page. (I find that this site works with FireFox but not with Opera.)

You can use the search bar at the top of the page, or else browse through categories in the lower half. For this tutorial, we'll browse using Quicklinks: click Chairs. 5. Notice that chairs are listed in a variety of ways: Visually and alphabetically. Filtered by properties (attributes), such as height and material. Filtered by manufacturer, file type, and Autodesk software (product libraries).
3 Figure 2: The listing of chair symbols. For this tutorial, click DWG (under File Type), and then Steelcase (under Manufacturer). These actions reduce the list to ten models. TIP To return to a previous category, click the browser's Back button, or else click the small x next to the sub-category name, as illustrated below. Figure 3: Removing filter items. 6. Notice that each chair has two.dwg files available.

Figure 5: Selecting the 3D format of DWG file, and displaying the preview image. b. Move the cursor over each preview image. Notice the enlarged preview that floats on the Web page. This allows you to see each DWG file in detail before downloading it. c. Click the checkbox next to the 3D drawing, and then click the Download Selected button. d. Notice the Opening (or Download) dialog box. Choose the Save File option, and then click OK.

(I find it curious that Autodesk's site does not use the company's idrop technology, which allows you to drag symbols from Web pages into AutoCAD drawings directly.) a. Open the folder in which the.dwg file was saved. (In FireFox, right-click the item in the Downloads window, and then choose Open Containing Folder.) Figure 7: Opening the containing folder with FireFox. b. Drag the file name into the AutoCAD drawing window. This inserts the file as a block. (If you drag the file name onto AutoCAD's title bar, the file is opened as a drawing.) c. Answer AutoCAD's prompts for inserting the block, such as insertion point and attribute values. d. If you wish, use the VPoint command to see the chair in 3D, and the
6 RenderCrop command to see it rendered. Figure 8: Rendering the 3D chair block. 8. This ends the tutorial; there is no need to save the drawing.
