1 U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PRISONS MONDAY MORNING August 27, 2012 HIGHLIGHTS Congressman Visits FPC Pensacola L. to R.: Warden Batts, Congressman Miller, and AW Joseph On August 16, The Honorable Jeff Miller, United States Representative for the 1 st District of Florida, visited FPC Pensacola. Congressman Miller met with Warden Samuel Batts and Associate Warden Miche lle Joseph, and received an overview of institution operations from Chief Psychologist Dr. Mandy Ramsey, DAP Coordinator Dr. Mary Kaye Johnson, Reentry Affairs Coordinator Bianca Freeman, Captain John Slater, Case Management Coordinator Laura Shank, Lieutenant Robert Shank, and Southeast Regional Reentry Affairs Coordinator Myra Lowery. During his visit, the Congressman toured the institution, including the RDAP housing unit. This was Congressman Miller s first visit to FPC Pensacola. He expressed his appreciation to the staff for their professionalism and dedication to correctional excellence. INSIDE HIGHLIGHTS In Memoriam: 2 Yvonne Sepulveda FCI Williamsburg Holds Mock Job Fair 2 Staff Serve the Community 2 Staff News 4 USP Atwater Staff Visit California State Prison On August 20, Warden Paul Coperhaver and 13 staff members toured California s Folsom State Prison. The visit was arranged as part of USP Atwater s staff leadership training program. Folsom Warden Rick Hill and members of his staff provided an extensive tour of the 400-acre historic state prison. Warden Hill provided USP Atwater staff with a Folsom State Prison in Represa, California wealth of information on the challenges he faces each day in managing the institution s nearly 3,000 inmates during difficult economic times. Mission of the Bureau of Prisons It is the mission of the Federal Bureau of Prisons to protect society by confining offenders in the controlled environments of prisons and community-based facilities that are safe, humane, cost-efficient, and appropriately secure, and that provide work and other self-improvement opportunities to assist offenders in becoming law-abiding citizens.
2 Monday Morning Highlights Page 2 In Memoriam: Yvonne E. Sepulveda On August 7, Yvonne E. Sepulveda, Residential Reentry Assistant, San Antonio RRM Office, passed away from a heart attack. She was 45 years old. Prior to joining the Bureau, Ms. Sepulveda was an Accounting with the United States Air Force. She began her BOP career at the San Antonio RRM office in prepare to reenter the community. David Bishop, Culinary Arts Instructor, provided lunch for the community participants. Staff Serve the Community MCC Chicago She is survived by three sisters, Yvetta Mora, Shelby Guerra, Evelyn Sepulveda, and two brothers, Abraham and Reynaldo Sepulveda. Chavez Boulevard, Room B-138, San Antonio, Texas, FCI Williamsburg Holds Mock Job Fair FCI Williamsburg staff and mock job fair volunteers On August 17, FCI Williamsburg s Education Department sponsored a mock job fair. Executive Assistant Linda Geter and Supervisor of Education Deborah Colon provided opening remarks. Dontess Dennis and Sandy Rogert coordinated the job fair and introduced representatives from the United States Probation Office, Department of Veterans Affairs, United Way, SC Works, Vocational Rehabilitation, Alston Wilkes Society, and the South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce. The community representatives conducted practice interviews with inmates, providing them an opportunity to hone their interview skills as they L. to R.: Leticia Zamora-Martinez, Warden Catherine Linaweaver, Principal Lucille Howard, and Captain Antonio Salas, Jr. MCC Chicago s Affirmative Action Committee recently sponsored a book bag and school supply drive to benefit the Charles E. Hughes elementary school a Chicago school that the MCC has been partnering with for more than five years. On August 13, Warden Catherine L. Linaweaver and Federal Women s Program Manager Leticia Zamora-Martinez delivered the donations to Principal Lucille Howard. The school staff and students expressed their appreciation for MCC Chicago s commitment and continued support. FCC Victorville On August 15, FCC Victorville Senior Officer Terry Johnson and Senior Officer Seth Thomas were returning to the Complex following a medical escort trip when their vehicle was struck by another vehicle, causing their vehicle to overturn. Officers Johnson and Thomas climbed out of the wreckage, secured the area, and requested assistance via institution radio. They extracted the inmate passenger from the rear of the vehicle, provided medical assistance to him, and assessed the condition of the other driver prior to the arrival of emergency
3 Monday Morning Highlights Page 3 personnel. Both officers were treated for minor injuries at a local hospital and are expected to return to work soon. A preliminary investigation showed that the driver of the other vehicle was texting on his cell phone when the collision occurred.
