I am glad to present you this booklet about the Centre for Agricultural and Applied Economic Sciences. Our Centre invites you and your friends from all over the world to take part in our Master of Science (MSc) programs offered in English language. 4 DEBRECEN The city of Debrecen has more than 200,000 inhabitants, making it the second largest in Hungary. It lies in the northeastern part of the Great Plain region, and is the cultural and scientific Centre of eastern Hungary, a city of festivals, which was always able to renew itself during its turbulent history of more than 640 years. The city is also attractive to people living in other continents. It receives hundreds of thousands of visitors every year during its festivals, which include the Béla Bartók International Choir Contest, Debrecen s Jazz Days, the Hungarian language and cultural courses of the Debrecen Summer School, or the Flower Carnival, held each year on August 20th, on the Feast of Saint Stephen, which celebrates Hungary s first king. Thousands of students attending college or university-level faculties choose to live and study in our city each academic year.

5 The University of Debrecen The University of Debrecen, like other integrated institutions of higher education in the country, was formed on January 1, 2000, through the (re) union of formerly independent institutions. The University is historically rooted in the Reformed College of Debrecen (founded in 1538), whose three academic sections later served as the basis for the establishment of the Hungarian Royal University of Sciences, created in With this heritage of more than 450 years, the University of Debrecen is the oldest institution of higher education still based in the same city in continuous operation in Hungary. Today, the university is comprised of 15 faculties and three agricultural research centres, and has close to 30,000 students. The University of Debrecen ranks among the top state higher education institutions in the region.

6 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS OPINION Xavier Mestdagh: (Belgium) Thanks to a warm welcome I have spent a wonderful time at the Centre for Agricultural and Applied Economic Sciences in Debrecen right from the start. The courses offered in English were very interesting and the professors were really well prepared. There are lots of things to see in the city and in its surroundings and there is a teeming student life with many international students. Weronika Ciesluk: (Poland) I will always remember the semester spent in Debrecen. The Campus of the Centre is always full of life. The different kinds of quiz shows and other social programmes give a chance to make relationships, and to find new friends. I will never forget the hospitality of the Hungarian people. The land of paprika, goulash,tokaji wine and the czardas will always be a very fond memory for me. Dr. Sina Gul Hakeem Khan: (Afghanistan) I am a doctor of veterinary science and I came here for the MSc. in Animal Science programme because I want to get to know the advanced educational system of Hungary and also I want to know more about the above mentioned field. I am glad to be here as the University is a nice place and has a good educational environment indeed.

7 Petrus Thyemo: (Namibia) The main reason I came here was to pursue my postgraduate studies after getting a scholarship. Being from Namibia, I knew little about Hungary or specifically about the city of Debrecen. I have been here for some months now, and I cannot express the beauty of the city, the hospitality of the people and the energy our campus offers. Surely during my stay here, there is more to come, and I cannot wait. Shimels Eshete Wassie: (Ethiopia) I have been here at the University of Debrecen Centre for Agricultural and Applied Economic Sciences since last August, I find it more interesting and wonderful city than what I have heard about it before. All professors and the university s communities are well-prepared and ready to help us. I hope we will have an enjoyable time in Debrecen during the two years we spend here.

8 AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING (MSC) UNIVERSITY OF DEBRECEN, HUNGARY About the course The MSc in Agricultural Engineering offers a training focusing on the fields of Applied Biochemistry, Applied Plant Physiology, Applied Genetics and Biotechnology, Applied Soil Science, Production Physiology and Nutrient Management which are the key research areas of the Faculty. We offer you a 4-week field practice in summer. Areas of Study Animal Nutrition, Integrated Crop Production, Animal Husbandry, Soil Cultivation and Land Development, Horticulture, Environment and Land Use, Marketing, Product Quality, Sectoral Economy, Research Methodology, Communication, Quality Assurance, Management, Medical and Spice Crops Production, Biometrics, Integrated Plant Protection, Organic Farming, Ethology, Project Management, EU knowledge, Animal Breeding, Milk and Meat Processing, Extension in Crop Production. We offer you a 4-week field practice in summer. Areas of Study Biochemistry, Quantitative and Molecular Genetics, Physiology, Reproductive Biology, Microbiology, Research Methods, Animal Production, Animal Nutrition, Natural Resource Management, Wild Animal Health, Aquaculture, Fisheries and Management, Food Safety and Quality, Economics and Planning. The training places special emphasis on combining the recent research results of disciplines supporting rural development. 20 SERVICES Accommodation The Centre for Agricultural and Applied Economic Sciences offers student accommodation for incoming students in the Arany Sándor Apartment House. In the flats shared by 2-4 students, there are two rooms, a kitchen, a toilet and a bathroom. Free internet access is provided in all the rooms for the students using their own computers. Computing services and library At the campus of the Centre for Agricultural and Applied Economic Sciences, the students can have access to computers in the Neptun Hall and at the Library. Using their own computers, the students are provided with free internet access in all rooms of the dormitory. Upon registering in the library of the Centre, the students gain access to all university library units of the National and University Library of Debrecen Sports facilities The sports facilities such as sports-court, tennis court, fitness rooms are at the students disposal for spending their free time. Entertainment The Kazánház on the campus of the Centre for Agricultural and Applied Economic Sciences offers a wide range of opportunities for entertainment, hosting university parties, pop music concerts and other events.
