2 The Evolution of Supply Chain Management Software On this page, Evan Armstrong of Armstrong & Associates, Inc. provides a brief overview of how the marketplace is evolving. In the pages that follow, we list 100 of the major logistics and supply chain software providers. Building on AMR Researcher s annual list of top Supply Chain Management companies, we ve come up with a list of top logistics and software providers. Our goal is to provide you with a resource to better understand the increasingly complex software market. The Editors Growth of supply chain systems has been rapid since The major focus of growth has been on enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, warehouse management systems (WMS), and to a lesser extent transportation management systems (TMS). While the economy has slowed outlays for systems over the last two years, it has not stifled development of a growing array of solutions and their increasing functionality. Now more than ever the focus is to select solutions with sufficient capabilities that can be easily implemented and provide a quick return on investment. The internet has been a major facilitator for this. In the process it has forced the industry to adapt more flexible pricing arrangements. With the emergence of internet systems providers in the 1990's, we saw a migration to more transactional based pricing mechanisms and a corresponding flood of traditional software companies developing webenabled solutions. System functionality and requirements vary greatly for potential users. Too often, providers focus only on the largest companies with the most sophisticated systems needs. However, required systems capabilities vary widely by customer size and supply chain complexity. A Fortune 100 company with a global supply chain network has dramatically different systems needs than a small manufacturer with one shipping facility. Most Fortune 100 companies with complex supply chains already have implemented an ERP system, a WMS, and in many cases a TMS. These systems have either been purchased directly, or, in the case of TMS and WMS, obtained by contracting with a third-party logistics provider (3PL) to supply the solution. In contrast, a small manufacturer may have an internal order management and accounting system, a capable manual warehousing operation, and only moderate needs for a decent TMS solution. Many systems solutions have been available for large companies for the past fifteen years. Thanks to increasing competition and the internet the number of systems available to medium and small companies is on the rise. Over the last three years, we have also seen an emergence of systems developed by 3PLs offering a variety of solutions such as a TMS that can be purchased and used via the web as a hosted solution, or TMS that costs under $100,000 developed for medium and small 3PLs and shippers. Some 3PLs have developed excellent supply chain systems for their own operations, although those are usually not available as unbundled systems. Because of the in-depth knowledge gained by 3PLs performing day-to-day order and shipment execution operations, we expect those companies, which we will call Supply Chain Network Execution Providers (SNEPs), to continue to develop robust systems. Up-and-coming S.N.I.P's are creating new competition for more established providers. They offer a broad selection of functions such as mode optimization, load tendering, contract file maintenance, and freight bill payment. Others offer systems that can process orders through multiple warehouses for multiple customers from a single database. Systems can interface with radio frequency scanners, provide error detection, and e-commerce order management. Others have developed that focus on international shipping, providing such features as a portal for online booking and shipment visibility, transportation management through private networks, exception alerts, and customized reports. In this new marketplaces, many traditional software companies have done well. With the internet and new entrants, the market for supply chain management systems is continuing to evolve and companies are being driven to continually think in non-traditional terms. Those that can are succeeding and gaining in market share. 66
