1 Curriculum vitae Dr. Luciano Mescia Luciano Mescia received the Master degree in Electronic Engineering in 2000 and the Ph.D. degree in Electromagnetic Fields in In January 2005, he joined the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DEE) at the Politecnico of Bari as Assistant Professor. His research activity focus on fibre and integrated optic technologies, with emphasis on rare-earth doped active devices, optical sensors for the environmental monitoring, optical fibres for industrial, biological and biomedical applications. His work includes the theoretical and experimental investigation of high power photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) laser and amplifier in double cladding configuration; rare earth doped optical fibre oscillators with single-mode output powers and operating in the Midinfrared wavelength range; thermal effects and pump power coupling techniques. His recent research activity is devoted to the investigation of innovative cascade lasing schemes, slow light generation in PCF via stimulated Brillouin scattering, stimulated Raman scattering, and coherent population oscillation, lasing action in rare earth doped microspheres, supercontinuum generation in photonic-quasicrystal fibers. He also works in the field of evolutionary computation and his research interests include theoretical aspects for the development of artificial neural networks, genetic algorithm, and swarm intelligence applied to rare earth doped fiber lasers and amplifiers. In particular, thanks to international collaborations, he is developing novel research activity about the characterization and optimum design of radiation-hardened and high power rare earth doped fiber amplifiers by means of particle swarm optimization. Moreover, in the field of Earth thermal radiation harvesting, he is developing new studies regarding the design of an antenna array that, differently from commercial solar panels, collects the longwave radiation emitted from the Earth and convert it into electricity. During his research activity he has cooperated with many national and international research institutions and he joined several research projects with academic and industrial partners. His research work has resulted in more than 100 publications in high-impact ISI scientific and engineering peer-reviewed journal, leading international conferences, lectures and invited papers. Moreover, he is a member of Italian Society of Optics and Photonics (SIOF-EOS) and Italian Society of Electromagnetism (SIEm). Chair Activity Member of COST action MP0702-WG3 group P3.3 Photonic crystal fibres (PCFs). Supporter of the project Near and Mid Infrared Photonic Crystal Fiber Lasers within the COST MP0702-WG3 group. Chairman of the session Emerging Technologies at IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics ISIE 2010.
