4 message from the committee chairman The CHRISTUS Spohn Cancer Center continues to be an important resource in the Coastal Bend community as we help more than 1,000 patients in their fight against cancer each year. Our commitment continues to our patients and their families as we provide continuum of care along their journey to a healthier life. Since 1967, the CHRISTUS Spohn Health System has remained the only Cancer Center in South Texas accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. We feel it represents the dedicated efforts of our Associates and clinicians through the years who have worked to eradicate cancer in our community. The center s cancer care team is comprised of dozens of physicians, registered nurses, chaplains, counselors, nutritionists and more who each day guide Coastal Bend families through the complex world of the health care system helping them to understand the most beneficial treatment options available through education, high-quality care and ongoing support. The Cancer Center offers some of the most advanced technology in the region including the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System and a CyberKnife, but with that, we continue to focus on the patient and their families. We are currently conducting a self assessment of our psychosocial service to ascertain if we are meeting the needs of the patient. Our Cancer Committee continues to review and approve the procedures and operations of our cancer program, monitoring the processes and level of quality for our patient care services leading the way in our community. The committee also supports prevention and early detection services to find and treat early signs of cancer. We hope our efforts continue to serve as the standard for high-quality cancer care in the Coastal Bend, bringing restored health and spiritual wellness to our patients and their families with each year. It s who we are and what we believe that makes our care stand out among the rest. 4 Ajay Sehgal, MD Cancer Committee Chairman

5 the cancer committee The Cancer Committee is the basis of our successful program. This committee is a multi-disciplinary group of physicians and other health professionals representing all specialties who are involved in patient cancer care. The Cancer Committee provides the leadership and policies that guide the program. Cancer Committee Members Chairman Ajay Sehgal, MD Medical Oncologist Cancer Liaison Robert May, MD Surgeon R. 6 Thomas Enright Cancer Center Director what we do 6 The CHRISTUS Spohn Cancer Center offers toplevel outpatient programs at the Radiation Therapy Center. The Radiation Therapy department s advanced equipment includes two linear accelerators, and the CyberKnife which allows us to treat very small lesions and deliver the needed dose of radiation to the cancer site while minimizing risk to surrounding healthy tissue. The department also is the only provider in the area for brachytherapy and high-dose radiation to a tumor through the use of radioactive implants, minimizing patient visits and treatments. This year, Cancer Center Associates will work to strengthen the human aspects of treatment for our valued patients. This will include utilizing patient stress questionnaires which measure stress and stressors and are invaluable to clinicians to offer the highest-quality care as patients moves through treatment. Cancer Center Associates also monitor patients financial issues, and transportation gaps, things that can become roadblocks on their path to renewed health. The Center s Oncology Social Workers evaluate the psycho-social needs of our patients, another important aspect of the support services available. Working with local agencies and churches, including the American Center Society, our social workers can link patients with a range of resources to meet their needs. At the core of what we do at CHRISTUS Spohn is Spiritual Care. In addition to the Cancer Center s Chapel, open during operating hours, our spiritual care Associates focus on faith-based healing, providing support, compassion and a human presence to our patients. The Cancer Center also features a Healing Garden, providing a peaceful setting for our patients with soothing plants and a bubbling fountain to relive stress. To empower patients in their road to recovery, the Cancer Center offers a Breast Care Program which features free educational seminars on a range of topics related to breast cancer awareness, early intervention and detection. A strong emphasis is placed on emotional and spiritual needs of our patients and removing any barriers to care. The Cancer Center s Navigator Program includes a special group of volunteers whom are mostly comprised of breast cancer survivors. They are a valued resource for relating to patients and their families on their healing journey. These volunteers are active in fostering patient relationships, programs, activities and community outreach. A bi-weekly Breast Cancer Support Group is offered to women and their families who have experienced

7 breast cancer and recently, the center has partnered with Crossroads Yoga to offer free yoga classes with an emphasis on working those parts of patient s bodies most affected by breast cancer. Each Wednesday, the CHRISTUS Spohn Cancer Center hosts Cancer Conferences, providing forums for physicians and Associates to discuss patient needs and programs. Since 1967, the conferences have helped shape case management, and offered education and fellowship on a range of oncology topics and issues. The Center also has partnered with FIRST FRIDAY a grassroots organization made up of women whose purpose is to knock out breast cancer through education, self breast examination and free breast screenings for women without the financial resources to do so. Each year, the group provides about 1,000 free mammogram screenings. All of this and more adds up to the high-quality care and compassion that has come to define the CHRISTUS Spohn Cancer Center. Together, the physicians, Associates and volunteers at the Center continue to passionately battle cancer in the community while focusing on the comfort, spiritual needs and dignity of our patients. It s our hope that our renewed focus on the human side of healthcare will bring you closer to our mission as we actively continue our healing ministry on your path to physical and spiritual health. 7

10 breast study 2011 This year s annual report focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. The CHRISTUS Spohn Health system Cancer Registry identified 297 analytical breast cancer cases in This is a 17% increase from the previous year. According to the American Cancer Society s Facts and Figures 2012, an estimated 226,870 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the US during 2012; about 2,190 new cases are expected in men. In addition to invasive breast cancer, 63,300 new cases of in situ breast cancer are expected to occur in women in An estimated 39,920 breast cancer deaths (39,510 women, 410 men) are expected in Breast cancer ranks second as a cause of cancer deaths in women (after lung cancer). Death rates for breast cancer have steadily decreased in women since 1990, with larger decreases in younger women; rates decreased 3.1% per year in women younger than 50 and 2.1% per year in women 50 and older. This decrease in breast cancer death rates represents progress in earlier detection, improved treatment, and possibly decreased incidence. Review of CHRISTUS Spohn system data revealed 297 new cases of breast cancer in Breast cancer represents 21% of all cancer cases diagnosed at CHRISTUS, which is slightly lower than the national average of 29%. The most frequently diagnosed histology was infiltrating ductal carcinoma accounting for 54 % of the cases. CHRISTUS Spohn Histologies Breast 2011 Our patients were most frequently diagnosed with Stage I (116 cases/39%) or Stage II (65 cases/21%) disease. CHRISTUS Spohn Vital Status Breast 2011 Alive 290 Expired Number of Patients Early detection of disease is the key to overcoming breast cancer. Mammography is an effective diagnostic tool used in the detection of breast cancer; however, it is not fail-proof. Approximately 80-90% of asymptomatic breast cancers are detected with mammog- raphy. This early detection translates into increased survival as well as possible cure. Per the American Cancer Society s Facts and Figures 2012, The 5-year relative survival rate for female breast cancer patients has improved from 63% in the early 1960s to 90% today. CHRISTUS Spohn Health System, in conjunction with FIRST FRIDAY, a breast cancer awareness group, have worked together to provide free screening mammograms for women who could not otherwise afford them. In ,394 mammograms were provided. Since this program began in 1994, 16,000 women have taken advantage of this potentially life-saving service. The average 5-year overall survival for all stages of disease diagnosed and treated within the CHRISTUS Spohn Health system is 79%. CHRISTUS Spohn Breast Yr Survival Number of Cases Today, receptor status is an important prognostic factor as well as an important tool in therapeutic decision making for breast cancer treatment. The following is a breakdown of patients based on estrogen and progesterone receptor status: ER+/PR+ 187 (63%) ER+/PR - 34 (11%) ER-/PR+ Unk (%) ER-/PR- 37 (13%) Unknown ER/PR was 39 (13%) Women who test positive for HER2/neu benefit from treatment with Herceptin.
