SIMon Social Indicators Monitor Heinz-Herbert Noll GESIS Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences - Social Indicators Research Centre (ZSi) Mannheim, Germany InGRID Expert Workshop, Budapest, November 27-29, 2013
Social Indicators Monitor SIMon is a web-service provided by the Social Indicators Research Centre of GESIS allowing online access to the time series data from two indicator systems, both considered as instruments for monitoring well-being and socio-structural change: German System of Social Indicators European System of Social Indicators
German System of Social Indicators Originally developed in the 1970s within the SPES-Project, and continuously elaborated and updated since by GESIS Social Indicators Research Centre 13 Life Domains + Total Life Situation Approximately 400 indicators (objective and subjective) and more than 1000 time series Time series from 1950s onwards as far as data available East Germany included after reunification 83 Indicators flagged as key-indicators For more information see e.g. Noll 2014
European System of Social Indicators Conceptual Framework and System Architecture initially developed within European-Project (EU-Reporting) to be used to monitor well-being and social progress across European societies Characteristics Structure: 13 life domains and 8 major dimensions of well-being and social change (currently 9 implemented, covering ca. 650 indicators and time series) Coverage: EU member states + Norway, Switzerland, United States, Japan Time Period Covered: 1980 onwards Regional disaggregation at NUTS-1 level if data availability allows Disaggregation of indicators by various socio-demographic characteristics Data Sources: aggregate data from various sources + microdata sets (e.g. ECHP/EU-SILC, LIS, EB, ISSP, EQLS, World-Value-Survey, European Social Survey)
European System of Social Indicators: Conceptual Framework Monitoring Well-Being Monitoring Social Change Individual Level Societal Level Quality of Life - living conditions - subjective well being Quality of Society Sustainability - natural and human capital Social Cohesion - disparities, inequalities, exclusion - social relations and ties Values and Attitudes - postmaterialism - gender roles - identity of Europeans etc. Social Structure - demographic - employment - migration, ethnic structure etc.
Life Domains Projected / Implemented Population, Household and Family Mobility & Transportation (under construction) Leisure, Media & Culture Participation & Integration Income, Standard of Living & Consumption Patterns Education and Vocational Training Health Housing Labour Market & Working Conditions Social Security (under construction) Public Safety & Crime Environment Total Life Situation
Life Domains & Measurement Dimensions Life Domains Population, Households and Families Transportation Leisure, Media and Culture Social and Political Participation and Integration Income, Standard of Living, and Consumption Patterns Education and Vocational Training Health Housing Labour Market and Working Conditions Social Security Public Safety and Crime Environment Total Life Situation Domain-specific Measurement Dimensions e.g. Child Care Services Income Inequality Trust in Educational System Health Prevention Environmental Impacts of Housing Occupational structure Attitudes towards Environmental Protection Dimensions of Well-Being Quality of Life Objective Living Conditions Subjective Well-Being Social Cohesion Disparities, Inequalities, Social Exclusion Social Ties/Social Capital Sustainability Human Capital Natural Capital Dimensions of Social Change Sociodemographic and -economic Structure Values and Attitudes
Dimensional Structure of the European System of Social Indicators Life Domains Dimensions of Welfare and General Social Change Measurement Dimensions Subdimensions Indicators
European System of Social Indicators Anticipated more recent demands and suggestions, e.g. by Stiglitz et al. Commission: Covers individual and societal well-being Follows a domain approach (going beyond the domains suggested by Stiglitz et al.) Considers quality of life as a multi-dimensional concept, including objective and subjective components Covers objective and subjective indicators (composite index under construction) Integrates sustainability (in terms of the World Bank s capital approach ) as a concept of societal well-being Integrates social cohesion as another concept of societal well-being Covers ca. 80 % of recently published Eurostat QoL Indicators and many more
SIMon Features SIMon Allows to browse and address indicators according to users needs Allows to display and visualize data as charts, maps and tables Provides tools for basic table manipulation and data analysis Allows to print and to export tables and charts in different formats Allows to save selected indicators and charts for later usage Provides search and help functions Allows bilingual utilization (English, German) for the German Indicator System, (European System = English only) Registration (free of charge) is required in order to take full advantage of the functionality of SIMon
