1 Lapua Ballistics User Guide 1 Lapua Ballistics User Guide Introduction Lapua Ballistics is advanced exterior ballistic software for mobile phones capable of predicting trajectories in real time with extreme accuracy. Using Lapua Ballistics, there is no need for checking tables and calculating cosines for rather imprecise inclination compensation. Not to mention the often ignored but vast influence of cartridge temperature on muzzle velocity and atmospheric conditions on the projectile's trajectory. Lapua Ballistics installs to basic mobile phones supporting Mobile Java and provides the user with exact elevation and windage corrections on the range, in special operations or in hunting sessions. Whereas advanced PC softwares, like Quick Target Unlimited, are ideal for desktop calculations, bullet comparison, ballistic table printing etc. purposes, Lapua Ballistics is a tool to be always at hand when you need it, without any compromise at the cost of accuracy. Employing a state-of-the-art ballistic model, the Lapua Ballistics, can significantly improve shooting accuracy if used with precise ballistic data. It will help to keep the spotter and shooter focused on their task and not on calculations and estimations. Lapua Ballistics is a customized version of Viking Ballistics ( with extended features. Viking ballistics is an advanced exterior ballistics program designed originally for professional long range snipers. Hardware requirements Lapua Ballistics can be installed to mobile phones supporting Java ME (Java MIDP 2.0 support needed). Typically older basic phones have this Java support in place as well as newer smartphones. Worldwide over 3 billion Java supported phones have been manufactured offering largest worldwide installed base of supported mobile devices for Lapua Ballistics. The program needs mobile phone with Java ME support. Apple iphone and Android platforms do not support Java ME. Lapua Ballistics is recommended to be installed directly to the phone using phone s web or WAP browser. Software can be installed also via PC with phone specific software. Software has been tested with several manufacturers devices supporting Java ME. However there may be vendor specific implementations of Java ME support causing installation problems. Also some Smartphones may require some installation permissions set in phone settings to allow correct installation.

2 Lapua Ballistics User Guide 2 Installation If you have an existing version of Lapua Ballistics installed on your device, it is strongly recommended to first remove the old program prior to installing a new one. 1. Browse with your device browser to URL Choose and click correct installation version link 2. Now setup files are downloaded, accept all prompts phone may ask during the installation process. 3. Program icon appears in default folder on your device, e.g. Downloads or Own programs 4. Find the Lapua Ballistics icon and start the program. At first use of, choose your preferred units (meters/yds, Celcius/Fahrenheit etc.) in Settings menu before using the program. Changing these units in future does not automatically reflect to stored profiles. Quick start guide 1. Main menu Settings a. Select units and preferences you want to use. 2. Option1: Assuming you create a new weapon profile a. Go to Calculator Sight in page b. Select which bullet to use and fill other sight in data for your weapon configuration 3. Option 2: Assuming you have previously stored profiles available a. Go to Main menu Load profile b. Select a profile and load it into use. c. Program will automatically jump to Calculator - Sight in page. d. Check sight in inputs and go to Calculate to start shooting 4. Calculator Calculate page a. This page is used to feed relevant field data and dynamically change them to calculate elevation and windage corrections. b. Enter shooting distance, wind and other shooting environment conditions 5. Read elevation and windage corrections from title or top row of the page a. Note that the shooting values are visible also on Sight in page title row. 6. Main menu Save profile a. You can save your gun, ammo and sight in data as an weapon profile

3 Lapua Ballistics User Guide 3 User interface Main features This program calculates elevation and windage corrections in real time. Program does not produce traditional trajectory tables, but is designed to provide a firing solution to match current conditions. Correction in number of total clicks in real time is available to shooter on the top of the display no time delays, no need to press OK or Enter to start calculation, always ready to shoot. Lapua Ballistics utilizes Doppler radar data for selected bullets enabling extremely accurate trajectory predictions on supersonic bullet speeds. At ICAO conditions Lapua Ballistics predicted results match results of Doppler radar measurements at 0.025mrad accuracy, which is approximately ¼ of a click on a typical riflescope with 1cm/100m adjustments. In Lapua Ballistics the correction values are shown only up to ranges at which bullet travels supersonic (>340m/s). If bullet speed drops below this point, the output will show U0 R0 Below are listed some main differentiate functions Lapua Ballistics carries on top of basic inputs needed in trajectory calculation. Both metric and imperial units supported and user selectable. Gun and ammo combination profiles can be stored and loaded in to use in seconds. Single gun can have multiple ammo profiles with one ammo being the primary ammo scope is zeroed with, and others, with possibly different POI, configured in such a way that user always gets true elevation and windage values to dial in to scope. Calculate and sight in page user interface is simplified if some advanced functions are not selected into use. Corresponding input fields not shown in this case making use of the UI more convenient to user.

Automatic muzzle velocity adjustment according to powder temperature sensitivity as cartridge temperature changes with ambient temperature. Uphill / downhill shooting corrections. (See Advanced functions details.) - Output scope total clicks. Shows output as total scope clicks accoding to selected value in Sight in. If not selected, shows output in mrad. Profile name Bullet name used and change bullet sub menu Zeroing conditions: range, v0, temperature, air pressure Note: station pressure! Scope elevation and windage click values Zero elevation POI up and Zero windage POI right. Used if gun is zeroed in a manner at which Point of impact (POI) of bullet deviates from point of aim (POA). See more detailed bullet data at the end of this guide Bullets marked with * are based on Doppler radar data, thus expected to provide extremely accurate trajectory predictions (results shown only on supersonic area). Lapua Ballistics is limited to Lapua bullets only. User can not add own bullets or adjust existing bullet coefficients.

Range = distance to target. Wind speed Incoming wind direction [clock value]: head wind=12, right wind=3, tail wind=6 etc. Uphill /Downhill shooting angle [degrees] Temperature Air pressure Latitude (needed for Coriolis only) Shooting direction in compass direction. 0=North, 90=East, 180=South, 270=West. Needed for Coriolis correction only. Estimated muzzle velocity Vo. Shows automatically the muzzle velocity used in trajectory calculation, value changes if field air temperature is changed and v0 temperature compensation is selected. Change value only if you have exact chronograph reading. (See Advanced functions details.) Advanced functions details Profiles User can store gun and ammunition data along with zeroing conditions in to a profile. A profile can be saved easily and loaded in to use in seconds making it convenient for the user to use software with multiple guns or ammo types. Single gun can have multiple ammo profiles with one ammo being the primary ammo the scope is zeroed with, and others, with possibly different point of impact (POI), configured in such a way that software always show true elevation and windage values to dial in to scope. Typical users benefitting from profiles feature are users e.g. hunters, snipers using multiple ammo types on a single rifle. Muzzle velocity (v0) temperature compensation Powder temperature affects the bullet muzzle velocity obtained with certain cartridge. The higher the powder temperature is the more muzzle velocity same cartridge will yield in same weapon and vice versa. The weapon may be zeroed at one air temperature on a range and then used at another location, possibly substantially at colder or warmer conditions resulting in higher or lower muzzle velocity than during zeroing. This change in muzzle velocity needs to be considered, especially in long range shooting. Key parameter affecting this velocity change is called powder temperature sensitivity. It describes how much muzzle velocity changes when powder temperature changes one degree. In sight in menu, there are two input fields for powder temperature sensitivity parameter (Vo change below 0 C and Vo change above 0 C). The temperature sensitivity is typically bigger the higher the temperature thus user can input two values for temperatures above and below zero. Powder temperature sensitivity depends on powder type, load, caliber, barrel and other smaller factors and can typically range from 0.2 up to 1.5m/s per 1 C. Precision users are encouraged to determine this

7 Lapua Ballistics User Guide 7 parameter for their own gun and ammo types based on test shootings with chronograph at various temperatures. If no information is available, a good default value to be used is in the range of 0.5m/s per 1 C. In Calculate page where ambient air temperature is given for shooting conditions, the program assumes the cartridge temperature to be the same and changes muzzle velocity accordingly (assuming you have feature activated in settings and temperature sensitivity parameter value set in Sight in page. Estimated muzzle velocity is shown on bottom of the Calculate page and value should not be changed unless user gets exact reading from the chronograph on field. In this case user may update the muzzle velocity on Calculate page and the v0 in Sight in page will be changed correspondingly. Zero elevation POI up and Zero windage POI right. Sometimes it is sensible to zero the gun in a manner at which point of impact (POI) of bullet deviates from point of aim (POA) at zeroing range. E.g. hunters typically zero the gun at 100m to hit 3-4cm high to optimize the bullet trajectory resulting the true zero range to be round m. In these cases, the bullet s POI deviation from POA is entered here when turrets show zero value for elevation and windage. The software adds or subtracts automatically this value and shows real elevation and windage values to set to scope despite non standard zeroing method. Another important use case for this function is secondary ammunition use in a weapon zeroed with primary ammunition. Typically secondary ammunition POI may vary mrad from the primary ammunition thus requiring the gun to be either re-zeroed or the deviation values to be remembered and corrected manually. Typically shooter does not want to touch the scope zero for primary ammunition and in stress situations remembering the correct amount and direction of the deviation may be challenging. To solve this problem this POI deviation from zero can be specified and own profile stored for secondary ammunition. E.g. a long range shooter using 10g Scenar as primary ammunition may want to use heavier 12g Scenar on certain conditions. Shooter just loads 12g Scenar profile into use (with POI deviation specified) and program shows true elevation and windage readings to the shooter.
