Back then, magazines all held the little Peugeot in the highest regard for it's immense handling abilities whilst being able to provide fast progress from A to B with much entertainment in between. Despite being a small car, it's design meant it was practical to use, whilst being attractive to look at. In hot hatch terms this was the truest legend, which has never since been bettered by Peugeot despite 4 subsequent attempts. Weighing only 880kg & being of small design with a well designed chassis meant the GTi was and still remains one of the best handling hot hatches ever built. Watch Autocars recent road test of the legendary GTi - to see what they have to say about it's qualities.see also Motors comparison between 205 & 208 GTi Having been enthusiasts for these hot hatches ourselves in the 80's & 90's, we've always taken a keen interest during the rare occasions when top condition examples of iconic European hot hatches have come up in Japan; which is always a rare occasion since so few of such cars were supplied new in Japan. Until now, these cars have always been too expensive to import from Japan back to Europe, but as we see well kept original examples sharply increasing in value & desirability in UK & beyond now, we have begun to look at these cars more seriously when they do come up for sale. In truth we've been searching for a good 205 GTi 1.9 in Japan for almost 2 years and this is the example that inspired us to make sure we obtained it for Newera's stock when we came across it. It was obvious to us on first sight this was the car we had been looking for. To explain this original 205's total rust free condition it's important to understand that in Japan, all roads are drained of water through the use of efficient concrete storm ditches (there are heavy rains at times from typhoons and Japan is 70% mountain terrain with forest, so safety is 1

2 paramount). This means there is no mud & debris washed onto roads during storms, unlike what is commonly seen in Europe. Roads in Japan are also probably the best maintained worldwide, without potholes, mostly smooth surfaces with good grip, etc. Japan is also the country with the largest network of roads in the world for a given area. No salt, grit or sand is laid on surfaces over winters in the most populated areas, as urban towns & cities are invariably built on lower plains, due to risk of earthquakes and consequential landslides that would be risked if building on mountain areas. Because roads are well designed and maintained in Japan, this means undersides of Japanese cars don't tend to be covered in electrolytic dirt and so when the underside gets wet in rain corrosion is much less likely to develop. Essentially the cars are washed by clean rain in Japan if they get wet and explains why cars used in Japan are typically completely rust free, including their undersides and all components. By contrast if you feel the inner arch of a car that's been on British roads for a decade or more, it will have corrugated dirt built up inside, which is electrolytic when wet and therefore corrosive. Corrosion to these Peugeots was common in much of Europe, where they were road driven on typically much harsher roads than found in Japan.Most GTi's supplied in Japan were LHD: Of all the 205's we've seen over the years only 2-3 would have been cars we would have wanted to stock, but unfortunately in the past, values in the UK wouldn't support importing such examples from Japan. One thing we did notice however, is that all those we saw previously were LHD. This is because since WW2 (Until the late 70's Japan wasn't known for manufacturing high quality prestige or Sports cars) LHD cars in Japan have been considered status symbols. This also explains why all the imported sports & prestige cars in Japan remain LHD today. Not having seen a RHD one before, we can only imagine the original owner specified RHD when ordering new in Japan, luckily so, we'd expect for it's future UK owner.full Service History: There is a full Japanese service history with this car, which further confirms how well this car's been cared for since new, although clearly there's no way an owner would keep a car as well as this and omit to maintain it.all original keys are also included, as well as original Japanese manuals. There is also proof of mileage from the shaken certificate, we will supply a scan of the original with the car on completion, so that paperwork can continue to tie in with onward ownership & care with this car's new owner in the UK. Exterior & Interior Condition Report: In keeping with the history of it's life in Japan this example, although rust proofed as new from the factory, has no corrosion at all to the underside. Even the original exhaust is still rust free and has original paint on! Even the fuel pump, although original still has original nickel plating on hose fittings, black paint on brackets, etc. The wheels have no bubbles of corrosion beneath the surface, yet still wear pactory original paint! The plastics are still fresh & unfaded and are in excellent original condition, inclusive of bumper corners & arches, mirrors, etc. The bodywork shows this car's always been loved and cared for. 3 retains a beautiful reflective finish. Interior is similarly beautiful & stunningly well kept. The front seats have no significant wear and are still firm and original and in similar condition to the unused rear seats. Far better than what is typically seen in 205's nowadays. Steering wheel has no significant wear either. Carpets are original and without staining or discolouration and as with the exterior, all the plastics are well preserved too. The electrics all work fine; windows go up & down fast - showing again that this car's not been stored outside at the mercy of the elements (dirt collects in the window runners of older cars stored outside, which results in slow operation). It's never been smoked in either; the cigar lighter has never been used either. We didn't like the fitted mats currently in the car so we ordered a brand new custom fitted set, complete with red piping and "205 GTi" on the front mats. The non-original shift knob was something else we didn't like, so even though there's nothing wrong with it, we've tracked down a brand new shift knob to fit. We even came across an original 205 Keyring, with the iconic Speedline 15" wheel design as a centerpiece of the fob, which will be provided with the car's original keys. We like perfection in every detail. The bodywork is excellent with just 3 pin dents to the doors. We'll be getting these professionally removed by a specialist who does excellent work in the UK. Comparing this to a car that's been on European roads all of it's life with restoration work done, would be a mistake. This Japanese example is all original and completely rust free. It's never been restored, it's just been extremely well kept & cared for - used only for leisure by a mature owner and garaged safely when not. It's never seen salt, grit, sand or other corrosives to it's underside. By contrast a car in Europe that's likely been restored, will have had rust that may not be visible, but is likely to return over time. With Japan's smooth roads, this example's got much less wear to chassis and other mechanical components too. Not least this car has factory fitted air conditioning which of course blew refreshingly cool on the warm day we shot pictures you see on our site. It also has factory fitted power steering. Road Test: The engine starts perfectly and settles down to a steady idle from cold, with good strong oil pressure. With mileage this low and typically frequent Japanese oil change intervals, it has no mechanical wear. Gearbox shows no wear to synchros. We noted there's no rattling of interior fittings & plastics, a sign of a car that's not lived a hard life at all. Performance is good, as to be expected from a car this light, but most notable is the enthusiasm with which this car can be thrown into corners. It feels small because it is, yet the interior isn't cramped at all. The factory slidable sunroof's pneumatic seal works perfectly too. There's nothing at all we could find amis with this example, except from the small detailed items listed above, which are being put right once the car is imported to the UK. This Peugeot GTi is now ready to ship to the UK, but will be held in Japan where it's safely stored under cover for now but can be reserved for prompt shipment with a deposit of 1,000. 40 How the Newera System Works (1). Starting with your inquiry, we provide a quote or communication, so that we are clear on just what you are after. We ask for detailed information from you, so we can provide an accurate quotation from the beginning. If you are inquiring about a car from stock, steps (2) and (4) are not required. (2). When sourcing to order, our quotation is based on your requirements. As long as your budget is sufficient for the car youre after & the car is likely to be available, we will be prepared to find the car you order, or better. Remember: even if you budget too much, it doesnt matter. We operate a system of supplying the best car we can find, plus a set fee of 900. If we can buy your car for a low price, then you make the corresponding saving. (3). When you are ready to proceed, we ask for a deposit (& completed order form, if applicable). The deposit is usually 1,000. If you want a car worth over 10K OTR, then the deposit is 1,500. The deposit is fully refundable without question, should you for any reason need to cancel before a car is bought on your behalf. If you are reserving a car from stock the deposit is refundable less costs and time incurred provided you cancel 4 working days before shipment from Japan. (4). Miguel, our buyer keeps you informed via periodically whilst searching for your car. Sometimes it can take weeks, even months to find the right car. In addition to Miguel attending the major Tokyo auctions daily, we have buyers searching daily throughout Japan for the car you want. No news simply means we havent found it yet. We dont buy the first car which comes along. It must meet or exceed your requirements whilst not costing more than the OTR price we agreed, though it frequently costs less. (5). As soon as available, we will you up to 30 detailed photographs, showing all aspects of your car. We also include a detailed description. Of course, total OTR price is known at this stage, so we let you know. Cars are insured from the time theyre bought, to the time they are completed & collected by you in UK. (6). Usually, boats are available every 2-3 weeks, from Japan to UK (Southampton). We arrange for your car to be shipped on the first vessel available. Around the time the car is shipped, we ask for the second instalment. Typically this is approximately 40

41 60% of the cars OTR total cost. Note that the car we supply to you is fully insured at all times prior to you collecting it. (7) We arrange booking of the SVA test in advance - shortly after the car departs, so that the car can be tested as soon as possible upon arrival to UK. We also inform our UK agent of your full contact details and information on everything which needs doing, to make sure the car wil be presented in beautiful condition. (8). Shipping takes 5 weeks. Around 2 weeks before arrival, we ask you for the final instalment, to cover Import duties, VAT, shipping, UK conversions, testing, registraton etc. (9). Before the car arrives, we arrange customs clearance, etc. so the car neednt spend un-necessary time waiting at the docks upon arrival. It usually takes 3-4 days for cars to be unloaded and cleared by UK customs. (10). The car is sent from Southampton to our UK agents premises in Canterbury aboard a car transporter. Upon arrival there, it is SVA converted, derestricted, SVA tested & MOTd (If applicable). All minor cosmetic work required (e.g. bumper scratches) is carried out. The car is fully valetted just before you collect it. (11). The car comes with 6 months road tax and is fully registered in your name as the first UK keeper. If you have a suitable private number plate youd like to go on the car, we can also arrange this, provided you have a DVLA retention certificate. N.B.
