Summary By now we have good breeding success within the Giant anteater EEP. Therefore it is likely that all institutions on the waiting list will get animals within the next two years. Many animals are from the same bloodline (Dortmund) which is not surprising as 57 animals were born at Dortmund Zoo of which 39 survived to adulthood. So it is difficult to find unrelated animals to form new pairs within the current EEP population. In the last years a few animals were imported from non EEP zoos, so new bloodlines will be established. Nevertheless it is still important to import new bloodline from North and South America or from Japanese institutions into the EEP. Although the waiting list is long it might be necessary to stop breeding with genetically over represented animals.

Discrepancy notes Tamandua Tamandua tetradactyla Summary NEWCHURCH No reply received in A growing number of zoos keep tamandua or want to start with this species. Only few institutions breed regularly. Over the last years some animals died because of wrong nutrition over a long time. Due to the low number of founders there are difficulties to build up unrelated pairs. From a new imported pair at Olomouc Zoo, which is not related to the population, a male offspring was transferred to Dortmund Zoo to build up a new breeding pair.

Summary In 2007 and 2008 three new participants joined the studbook, Valencia in Spain, and Blackpool and London Zoo in the United Kingdom. A total of eight (2.4.2) animals were born of which two did not survive. All aardvarks in EAZA zoos are captive born as the last wild caught animal died in To improve breeding some animals have been moved in Programme difficulties: Inbreeding will be inevitable in the near future. Apart from the question if this is considered to be a problem, it turns out to be much more difficult than expected to import animals from the American population, or from the wild. Zoos in the United States do not seem very willing to put a lot of efforts in an exchange of animals with Europe. Wild caught animals are an option, but there is some reluctance, because of the doubt in reliability of the parties who are currently offering aardvarks from the wild. Furthermore, all animals in European zoos are from Namibia and the animals offered are often from Tanzania. If subspecies problems exist is yet unknown. Some genetic research has been done, but no satisfying results have become apparent. However, fresh blood is needed to avoid inbreeding.

Ten of these institutions identified which subspecies they keep (P. c. capensis, P. c. jayakari or P. c. syriaca). The last individual of P. c. syriaca, which was kept in Plzen Zoo, died in Programme difficulties: In contrast to the results of the first survey (2005) the ex situ population was self-sustaining in But the successful management of the population is affected adversely by the high percentage of undefined subspecies. Many of the hyraxes currently living in EAZA institutions are wild born and their capture or birth locations are not reliably known. That means no conclusions concerning the subspecies are possible. Through genetic study subspecies of captive hyraxes can be determined and verified. Moreover it will show how valid and different the subspecies are (the taxonomy is also discussed and controversial see Wilson & Reeder 2005, Olds & Soshani 1982). Dr. Carlos Fernandes from the Biodiversity and Ecological Processes Group of the Cardiff University in the United Kingdom and the Centre of the Environmental Biology of the Lisbon University in Portugal, analysed hair samples from hyraxes from Zoo d Amnéville and the Breeding Centre of Endangered Wildlife in Sharjah with the aim to create a phylogenetic tree. Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Osnabrück sent also hair samples during last year. Unfortunately up to now no further results are available and no progress is made. Also efforts to determine subspecies by phenotypical features were not successful. Without a solution during near future it is foreseeable that we will breed zoo-hyraxes.
16 Rock hyrax Annual Report Notes Programme recommendations: The subspecies should be determined and verified. At moment the unknown subspecies should not mixed with defined subspecies. The was initiated in 2008, therefore the data in the report only represents that year.

Summary Notes At 31 December individuals of bush hyrax were kept in four institutions. Berlin TP and Osnabrück started keeping this species in Programme difficulties and recommendation: The population size of EAZA institutions is, with only 19 individuals, too small to manage it well. Therefore it is necessary to cooperate with non-eaza zoos. During last year EAZA zoos received 3.4 individuals from non-eaza zoos. The was initiated in 2008, therefore the data in the report only represents that year.
