vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View Installation Configure a Group Policy Object for All Desktops You must configure a group policy object (GPO) that applies to all View desktops to monitor. The GPO administrative template for vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View is called v4v_desktopagent.adm, and is located in the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\Server\extras\GroupPolicyFiles directory on the View server on which you installed the broker agent. You configure the group policy object on the base image or on the Active Directory server, depending on the desktops in your environment. If you are using a single base image with linked clones, apply the change to the base image. The change takes effect immediately. If you are not using a single base image, apply a group policy on the Active Directory server. Apply the group policy to the Organizational Units that contain the user desktops to be monitored. NOTE It might take up to one hour for the GPO to propagate to all machines in the domain. Prerequisites Verify that you deployed the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View desktop agent on all desktop virtual machines to monitor. Procedure 1 In Windows, run gpedit.msc. 2 Expand Computer Configuration, right-click Administrative Templates, and select Add/Remove Templates from the context menu. 3 In the Add/Remove Templates dialog box, click Add, browse for the v4v_desktopagent.adm file, click OK to add the template, and close the dialog box. 4 Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates > Classic Administrative Templates (ADM) > VMware View Agent Configuration, and click vcenter Operations Manager. 5 Double-click View adapter location on the right, and select Enabled. 6 In the View adapter URL text box, type the IP address of the Analytics VM where the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View adapter is installed. The format is rmi://<analytics VM IP>: Click OK. 24 VMware, Inc.
Chapter 2 Installing and Configuring vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View Install a vcenter Operations Manager Collector on the Remote Server To collect performance data from a remote data center it is recommended that you install a vcenter Operations Manager remote collector locally at that data center. Remote collectors help you distribute the load on the vcenter Operations Manager vapp for better performance. CAUTION Enabling the connection between remote collectors and the Analytics VM carries serious security implications for your environment. The adapter for remote colectors does not authenticate desktops. Therefore, an attacker could potentially send rogue data for a desktop to vcenter Operations Manager. All data that is transmitted is encrypted. However, a default self-signed certificate is used. If an attacker gains access to this certificate, it might be possible to decrypt the data sent from desktop agents to the adapter. This includes the Horizon View inventory, Horizon View events, machine names, IP addresses, user names, and general desktop performance data. For detailed information and important considerations, see the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View Security Guide. You can install a vcenter Operations Manager collector on Windows or on remote servers that run Linux. This procedure is for Windows. Prerequisites Verify that you have privileges to create services on the remote server. If possible, use the credentials of an administrator user. Verify that you downloaded the installation package for vcenter Operations Manager Installable, and that the package corresponds to the operating system of the remote server. The format of the installation package name is vcops-<system architecture>-<product version>-<build number>.exe. For example, the name of an installation package for 64-bit Windows might be vcops-win exe. Procedure 1 Log in to the remote server and navigate to the folder that contains the vcenter Operations Manager installation package. 2 Run the installation package file of vcenter Operations Manager. 3 In the vcenter Operations Manager installation wizard, click Next. 4 Click the icon next to Collector and click Next. 5 Click OK to accept the default installation folder, or click Browse and select an installation folder. The default installation folder is \vmware\vcenter-operations\ in the system drive of your machine. The Pre-installation Summary page lists the components that are installed. 6 Click Next and Install to begin the installation. The installation process might take several minutes. At the end of the installation process, the Configuration Mode page appears. What to do next To configure the remote collector to connect to the vcenter Operations Manager vapp, contact VMware Support Services for assistance. VMware, Inc. 25
vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View Installation Create a vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View Adapter Instance on the Remote Collector You must create an adapter instance to connect vcenter Operations Manager to the remote collector. Prerequisites If a firewall is configured on the remote collector server, verify that ports 3091 through 3094 are open through the firewall. The vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View broker and desktop agents use these ports to communicate with the adapter. Verify that the remote collector is configured to communicate with the vcenter Operations Manager vapp. If needed, contact VMware Support services for assistance. Verify that you are logged in to the vcenter Operations Manager Custom user interface as an administrator. The URL format is where <UI-VM> is the IP address of the UI VM virtual machine in the vcenter Operations Manager vapp. Procedure 1 Select Environment > Configuration > Adapter Instances. 2 From the Collector drop-down menu, select the name of the remote collector. 3 From the Adapter Kind drop-down menu, select V4V Adapter. 4 Click the Add New Adapter Instance icon. 5 Type a name for the adapter instance. 6 From the Metric Set drop-down menu, select a set of metrics to be collected. Table 2 2. Metric Sets Option Full Set Reduced Set Description Select this option to collect all metrics that are available for the monitored environment. Select this option to collect a limited set of metrics, and save disk space on the Analytics VM. 7 From the Credential drop-down menu, select the name of the credentials to use when the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View broker agent pairs with the adapter instance. When you create an adapter instance for the first time, the Credential drop-down menu is empty. You can click Add to create a server key password. You must type the server key password in the broker agent configuration to allow pairing between the broker agent and the adapter. Pairing the broker agent with the adapter is an authentication step that ensures that the broker agent and the adapter know each other. Pairing must be finished to allow the broker agent and the desktop agents to communicate with the adapter. 8 Click OK to save the adapter instance. A vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View adapter instance is created on the remote collector server. What to do next 26 VMware, Inc.
Upgrade From vcenter Operations Manager for View 1.0 to vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View If you have vcenter Operations Manager for View 1.0 installed in your environment, you can import the data to vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View and continue monitoring the health and performance of your View pods. You can perform data migration only by using the local adapter on the vcenter Operations Manager vapp. Remote collectors are not supported. All View pods that are monitored by vcenter Operations Manager for View 1.0 must be configured to use the vcenter Server collector and the View adapter on the vcenter Operations Manager vapp. If you have existing View pods in the environment that are not monitored yet, you can configure them to use a vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View adapter on a remote collector. For information about installing the View Adapter PAK file, see Install the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View Adapter, on page 16. For information about installing the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View Broker Agent, see Install the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View Broker Agent, on page 18. Prerequisites Upgrade the VMware View environment to use Horizon View 5.3, or deploy the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View desktop agent to all View desktops. See Install the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View Desktop Agent, on page 22. NOTE If you choose not to upgrade to Horizon View 5.3, verify that the desktop agent GPO policy is applied to all desktops. The GPO policy must be configured to use the Analytics VM as the location of the View adapter. Upgrade the vcenter Operations Manager vapp to version by deploying the vcenter Operations Manager vapp PAK file. See the vcenter Operations Manager vapp Deployment and Configuration Guide. Procedure 1 On the vcenter Operations Manager for View 1.0 adapter server, stop the vcenter Operations View Adapter service. a b c Log on to the View 1.0 adapter server. In Computer Management, navigate to the list of Windows Services. Stop and disable the vcenter Operations View Adapter service. NOTE Stopping the vcenter Operations View Adapter service interrupts the data collection until the upgrade process is finished. Stop the adapter service before you proceed with the upgrade to reduce the risk of duplicating resources and data in the database. VMware, Inc. 27
vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View Installation 2 Install the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View adapter on the vcenter Operations Manager vapp by deploying the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View PAK file. During the installation of the adapter, the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View 1.0 configuration, including resource kinds, metric names, and so on, are converted to comply with version Install the broker agent on a View server that belongs to the same View pod that vcenter Operations Manager for View 1.0 was monitoring. The broker agent configuration wizard opens at the end of the installation. 4 On the View Adapter configuration page, type the IP address and port of the Analytics VM where the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View adapter is installed. NOTE You cannot use a remote collector when migrating data from vcenter Operations Manager for View 1.0 to vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View Click Pair to pair the certificates of the broker agent with the adapter. You are prompted to type the server key that you specified when you configured the credentials for the adapter instance. Pairing the broker agent with the adapter is an authentication step that ensures that the broker agent and the adapter know each other. Pairing must be finished to allow the broker agent and the desktop agents to communicate with the adapter. 6 Click Next. 7 On the data migration page of the wizard, click Migrate. NOTE You can migrate data from previous product versions only during the initial configuration of the broker agent. If you choose to skip this step, you can no longer import old monitoring data. 8 (Optional) Browse for the MetricBoundaryData.xml file. The MetricBoundaryData.xml file contains records for all minimum and maximum values for every metric in the View environment. These values are used primarily for calculating normal workloads. If you choose not to import the file, for the first few days you see unrealistically high workloads, until vcenter Operations Manager learns what is the expected behaviour. By importing the MetricBoundaryData.xml file, you help the system to calculate faster what values are normal in your environment. 9 Click Migrate to start the data migration. It might take several minutes for data migration to be completed. 10 When the data migration process is finished, follow the prompts to finish configuring the broker agent. All vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View resources are migrated to the database. The View 1.0 adapter is deleted from the vcenter Operations Manager vapp. The VCOps_View_Translator adapter no longer appears in the list of adapters of vcenter Operations Manager Custom user interface. What to do next After the upgrade, the server where the vcenter Operations Manager for Horizon View 1.0 adapter is installed is not needed. You can uninstall the View adapter from this server and repurpose it, or remove the virtual machine from your environment. 28 VMware, Inc.
