1 Puricare se benadering tot Brakwater Besproeiing en Grondversouting. Gedurende droë somermaande ondervind talle boere ernstige probleme met die verhoogde soutinhoud van besproeiingswater as gevolg van meer intensiewe besproeiing, oppervlakverdamping van rivierwater asook die toevoeging van opgeloste soute vanaf myne en soutbevattende kunsmis. Die hoë soutkonsentrasie het ʼn nadelige effek op die water se infiltrasievermoë asook die fisiese toestand van die grond, maar fotosintesebeperkinge word ook ondervind deurdat n soutnetwerk/neerslag op blaaroppervlaktes vorm en brandsimptome ontwikkel. Die geskiktheid van water vir besproeiingsdoeleindes hang af van die konsentrasie en die tipes soute (veral Natriumsoute) teenwoordig in die water. Besproeiingswater met hoë Natrium-konsentrasies kan steeds bruikbaar wees as die Kalsium (Ca) en Magnesium (Mg) konsentrasies ook hoog is. Om hierdie verhouding te kwantifiseer is die konsep van Natrium Adsorbsie Verhouding (NAV), of beter bekend as die SAR (Sodium Adsorption Ratio) ontwikkel, wat die Natriumkonsentrasie as ʼn verhouding tot die totale Kalsium- en Magnesium-konsentrasies uitdruk. Sodra die NAV waarde bokant 12 tot 15 styg, ontwikkel ernstige grondstruktuur probleme en sukkel plante om water te absorbeer. Puricare en besproeiing met brakwater: Die Puricare Landbou Eenheid stel geaktiveerde suurstof in besproeiingswater vry wat besproeiingspype skoonmaak, met minerale o.a. Kalsiumkarbonaat (CaCO 3 ) reageer en hul oplosbaarheid verhoog, n beter Natrium Adsorpsie Verhouding (NAV) tot gevolg het en sodoende die nadelige sout-effek van die water verbeter. Puricare se waterbehandeling verwyder nie die oormaat Natrium- en Chloriedione in die water nie, maar kan wel hul nadelige effek verbeter deur die verhoogde oplosbaarheid van minerale (bv. Kalsiumkarbonaat/CaCO 3 ) en die verhoogde opneembaarheid van Ca en Mg deur plante.
2 Soutneerslag van onbehandelde Soutneerslag brakwater van onbehandelde op n klawerblaar Behandelde brakwater het geen soutneerslag op die klawerblaar gevorm nie Water wat deur die Eenheid behandel is, vorm nie meer n soutnetwerk op die blaaroppervlak nie, geen brandsimptome word waargeneem nie en blare kan suksesvol fotosinteer. Brakgronde: Tydens droogtetoestande kan gronde onproduktief raak wanneer onoordeelkundige besproeiings- en grondbestuur, beperkte/onvoldoende interne dreinering van gronde en verhoogde oppervlakverdamping soutakkumulasie in die grond laat plaasvind. In die algemeen word daar na gronde met hoë soutinhoude as brakgronde verwys. Drie verskillende tipes brakgronde word onderskei, nl. soutgronde, natriumsoutgronde en natriumgronde. 1. Soutgronde besit n hoë konsentrasie neutrale soute (nie natriumsoute), die versadigingsekstrak het n elektriese geleidingsvermoë (EC) hoër as 400 millisiemens (ms) per meter, n UNP (Uitruilbare Natrium Persentasie) en NAV laer as 15 en ʼn ph laer as 8.5 Soutgronde staan ook as witbrak bekend omdat dit gekenmerk word deur ʼn wit laag soute wat op die oppervlak versamel. Hierdie soute is gewoonlik chloriede en sulfate van Ca, Mg en Na. 2. Natriumsoutgronde het beide ʼn hoë sout- en natriuminhoud, die elektriese geleivermoë van die versadigingsekstrak is hoër as 400 ms, 1 m die NAV en UNP is hoër as 15 en ph is laer as 8.5.
3 3. Natriumgronde het nie n hoë soutinhoud nie, maar wel ʼn hoë uitruilbare natriuminhoud. Die elektriese geleivermoë van die versadigingsekstrak is laer as 400 ms, 1 m die NAV en UNP is hoër as 15 en die ph is hoër as 8.5. n Hoë konsentrasie oplosbare Natriumsoute in grond verhoog die osmotiese druk van die grondoplossing sodat plante moeilik water en plantvoedingstowwe opneem. Plante mag dus droogte ly op betreklik nat grond. Omdat Na + ione monovalent is en n groot gehidreerde ioondeursnit het, veroorsaak ʼn hoë konsentrasie uitruilbare Na + ione dat die elektriese dubbellaag verdik, die kleikolloïede mekaar afstoot en as afsonderlike gedispergeerde deeltjies voorkom. In gestruktureerde gronde veroorsaak dispersie dat die binding tussen die kleideeltjies verswak, die aggregate verbrokkel, die struktuur en makroporositeit verval en dat die porieë toeswel a.g.v. die dik elektriese dubbellaag. Dit lei tot ʼn baie lae effektiewe porievolume waardeur water vrylik kan vloei en dus ʼn lae versadigde hidrouliese geleivermoë. Die hoë ph van natriumgronde is die gevolg van ʼn hoë konsentrasie Na2CO3 in die grond wat hidroliseer na OH ione. Na2CO3 + 2H2O Na + + 2OH + H2CO3 Die hoë ph veroorsaak dat humus oplos en as ʼn swart neerslag op grondoppervlaktes versamel, vandaar die algemene benaming van swartbrak gronde. Die abnormale hoë ph is ook nadelig omdat dit die toeganklikheid van ander elemente beïnvloed. Die bevordering van brakgronde: Om grondverbrakking te verbeter is nie n eenvoudige proses met n kort of maklike oplossing nie. Nuwe, wetenskaplike bestuurspraktyke daarvoor is plaaslik nog nie so goed bekend soos in Israel, die Midde-Ooste en Australië nie. Dáár word besproeiing, transpirasie en plante se waterbehoeftes noukeurig gemeet en vergelyk met grondtipes en dreineringsvermoë. Die enigste werklike (eeue oue) metode in Suid-Afrika om grondversouting op te hef, bestaan uit die loging van erg versoute grond.
4 Die hoofdoel moet wees om die soute uit die wortelsone te verwyder (uit te loog) omdat die haarwortels gevoelig vir oormatige sout is. Natrium is n baie mobiele element weens die hoë oplosbaarheid van alle Natriumsoute en omdat Natriumione betreklik swak deur grondkolloïede geadsorbeer word. Uitloging van oormatige soute is n tydsame prosedure en as die dreinering nie vakkundig geskied nie, kan die grond se vrugbaarheid vernietig word. Dit is veral ʼn probleem as die landerye laag teen die rivier is, of as die grondwater baie vlak is en die loging nie onder die wortelvlak van die plant (300 tot 900mm) kan geskied nie. Wanneer die watervlak dus styg (bv. deur besproeiing, reën of die afwesigheid van doeltreffende dreinering) kan die sout grondwater die boonste grondlae bereik en soute aan die wortelsone voorsien. Soutgronde word normaalweg maklik herwin deur herhaalde loging met water, maar die herwinning van natriumgronde is moeilik omdat die fisiese skade daaraan redelik permanent is en die versadigde hidrouliese geleivermoë laag is. Herwinning is slegs moontlik deur herhaaldelik groot hoeveelhede gips (Kalsiumsulfaat CaSO 4. 2H 2 O) met die grond te vermeng sodat die Ca ++ ione die uitruilbare Na + ione kan verplaas waarna die Natriumsoute geleidelik uit die grondprofiel uitgewas moet word met goeie kwaliteit besproeiingswater (lae konsentrasie nie skadelike soute). Wanneer die oormaat Na + ione verwyder is, is die dominante uitruilbare katione di- en trivalent met ʼn klein gehidreerde ioondeursnit (bv. Ca ++ ) en is die elektriese dubbellaag dun sodat die kleideeltjies aanmekaar vaskleef om groter eenhede te vorm. Hierdie toestand, nl. Flokkulasie, is bevorderlik vir struktuurvorming en instandhouding van die makroporositeit van gronde. Dit is n moeisame en duur proses en waar die natuurlike interne dreinering van die grond te swak is, is die installasie van kunsmatige dreinering noodsaaklik. Puricare se bydra tot die verbetering van brakgronde: Die Puricare Landbou Eenheid stel ten doel om swak landbougronde te rehabiliteer en poog ook om brakgronde te verbeter. Die geaktiveerde suurstof in besproeiingswater reageer met minerale o.a. kalsiumkarbonaat (CaCO 3 ), verhoog hul oplosbaarheid, lei tot n beter Natrium Adsorpsie Verhouding (NAV) en tesame met hoër suurstofvlakke in die grond, beter gronddeurlugting, beter waterinfiltrasie en goeie wortelstelsels word n goeie wegtrek vir
5 gewasontwikkeling verseker. Goeie boerderypraktyke (bv. toediening van landbougips/sbevattende misstowwe en organiese materiaal) gevolg deur herhaalde besproeiing met Puricare behandelde water kan oormatige braksoute (as o.a. Na2SO4) uitloog. Gedispergeerde klei word weer stelselmatig geflokkuleer, gunstiger toestande vir struktuurvorming word geskep en grondwaterhouvermoë en grondkwaliteit word bevorder. Saamgestel deur:
