Located in Esbjerg in the South West of Denmark, our Department is part of the University of Southern Denmark. Together with our staff of competent researchers we address The Blue Denmark, i.e. all industries and organisations in the maritime field of businesses. Globalisation today offers a variety of opportunities in terms of cooperation and exchange across borders, but in many ways it is also a challenge. The Department of Maritime Research and Innovation wants to contribute actively to the continous improvement of maritime industry competitiveness in the global market place, with our focus on maritime economics, management, cluster development and transport optimisation. NAVY SHIPOWNERS OFFSHORE VISION The vision of the Department of Maritime Research and Innovation is for The Blue Denmark to be a coherent, powerful and innovative maritime cluster run by globally competitive and visionary companies. The Department will play a central role as a producer and conveyor of knowledge and be an active, outreaching force behind the construction and development of the Danish maritime cluster. MISSION The mission of Department of Maritime Research and Innovation is to be a nationally leading and an internationally renowned research unit that focuses on business development, planning and knowledge development within The Blue Denmark. STAKEHOLDER FOCUS The Department wants to create a powerful research environment, by conducting a practice near and stakeholderoriented activities it will: > contribute to improving The Blue Denmark framework conditions and development opportunities > assist the development of competitive companies and organisations within The Blue Denmark > propagate knowledge of Danish and international shipping/navigation as well as of maritime industries in general > transfer the newest practice-oriented knowledge to relevant recipients through education and publisation EQUIPMENT MARITIME SERVICES TRANSPORT & LOGISTICS SERVICES CONSULTING MARITIME ACADEMIES STEERING COMMITTEE A steering committee has been established in order to ensure that our research, education and knowledge dissemination always match the needs of The Blue Denmark. The Department s activities are divided into four interdependent task areas. We elaborate on the contents of each task area on the following pages. RESEARCH EDUCATION WE SEE OUR RESEARCH FROM 4 PERSPECTIVES: of ships, the business culture of the parties, contract related factors, or yet other factors? As part of its role as a knowledge provider to the Danish maritime industries, the University of Southern Denmark offers a sector. On the basis of our research activities, we can introduce students to the newest results within maritime research > THE MACRO PERSPECTIVE: Global shipping markets and framework conditions > THE LEADERSHIP PERSPECTIVE: Development of efficient maritime organisations through visionary leadership and innovation > THE CLUSTER PERSPECTIVE: Development dynamics within The Blue Denmark > THE PLANNING PERSPECTIVE: Development of efficient maritime transport systems and ports for short sea shipping THE LEADERSHIP PERSPECTIVE: How to optimise cooperation between a ship and its onshore organisation... This project is about improving cooperation between the shipping company s technical onshore organisation and the crew of the ships, seen in the light of new technological possibilities and of the breakdown of traditional work roles. THE CLUSTER PERSPECTIVE: Cluster relations and industrial growth... This project examines the usability of the cluster concept as a framework for understanding the factors that generate change Master s degree in Transport and Maritime Management. The Department of Maritime Research and Innovation plays an important part in the teaching, marketing and coordination of this course of education. FOCUSED EDUCATION The purpose of the master programme is to offer a study tailorised to the needs for maritime industry employees. The structure and contents of the master degree have been developed in close cooperation between the University of Southern Denmark and a planning group with representatives from the maritime industries, the transport and the newest practices in firms. Thus, our students will experience an educational environment marked by close cooperation with companies, professional schools and research environments both in Denmark and abroad. Our primary applicant group is composed of maritime industry employees who aim to get or who already have management experience within areas such as navigation, logistics, service, equipment, port and transport activities. CONTENTS AND STRUCTURE All our projects have been initiated as results of cooperation with maritime industry stakeholders. Here are a few examples of research projects that illustrate this one from each perspective: and innovation within the Danish maritime industry. The project is a result of cooperation between Copenhagen Business School and Department of Maritime Research and industries and the Danish Maritime Authority. Therefore, the skills acquired by the student during his/her education will match the future needs of the maritime industries. MAXIMISING THE LINKS BETWEEN OF THE EDUCATION The part-time master s degree takes two years. It is composed of 4 semesters of studies that employees can complete while working. The study programme is organised in mod- THE MACRO PERSPECTIVE: Strategic analyses of pools and other kinds of cooperation between shipping companies and other operators concerning a common supply of transport capacity and route network... Innovation. THE PLANNING PERSPECTIVE: A model of the competitiveness of short sea shipping... The Department of Maritime Research and Innovation has developed a model THEORY AND PRACTICE The Master s degree has been organised in order to maximise interplay between theory and practice. The Department of Maritime Research and Innovation stresses the importance ules and consists of compulsory as well as executive subject modules, semester projects, a seminar week, and finally, the preparation of a master s dissertation. This project examines what are the crucial factors for the success of these kinds of cooperation. The continuous dialogue with The Blue Denmark stakeholders model now used by Danish ports to calculate their financial impact on local communities. We work to meet these needs through our research, education and networking activities. The presentations relate to everyday job situations and relate to theory and to practice. FOR A DANISH SHIPPING COMPANY: We calculated the environment-related costs for society in the cases of either road or sea transport of the same amount of goods. In the actual case, road transport imposed on society an extra DKK 2 million.

( THE BLUE UNIVERSITY Today a large amount of valuable knowledge is tied to individual maritime organisations and companies. In order to make this knowledge generally available to The Blue Denmark, it is of great importance that the knowledge production be compiled, structured, scrutinised and communicated. Innovation has therefore, in cooperation with the Maritime Development Centre of Europe, initiated the establishment of The Blue University. The Blue University works as a basis for sharing of knowledge and experience between the stakeholders of The Blue Denmark and across academic disciplines. As members of The Blue University, we interact with other researchers, teachers, consultants, civil servants and business persons. Together, these actors create a fertile soil for creative thoughts and ideas to the benefit of The Blue Denmark. BLUE CAMPUS NETWORK The University of Southern Denmark is a leading university within non-technical maritime research and education. Especially the Esbjerg campus hosts a large variety of research units related to maritime issues. Innovation has therefore initiated the Blue Campus Network which links the different branches of science with focus on maritime research, including fishing and offshore activities in the vicinity of Esbjerg. Innovation is continually in contact with renowned international research forums worldwide for purposes of cooperation and exchange of maritime knowledge. This enables us to be always at the forefront of research. Together with Copenhagen Business School and the Maritime Development Centre of Europe, we have been appointed to host the annual conference of the International Association of Maritime
