2 Page 2 of 7 Hardware Before installing Dragon Medical Practice Edition v2, always consult the Recommended System Requirements. It is recommended that you computer meets, better yet exceeds, the Recommended System Requirements. Recommended System Requirements: CPU: Intel Pentium 2.2 GHz (dual 1.8 GHz core processor) or equivalent AMD processor Processor Cache: 2 GB Free Hard Disk Space: 5 GB RAM: 2 GB for Windows Vista (SP2 or higher), Windows XP Home (SP3 or higher), Windows XP Professional (SP3 or higher). 4 GB for Windows 8, Windows 7 (SP1), Windows Server 2008 SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2 (SP1 or higher). Soundcard: must be capable of supporting 22 khz 16-bit mono audio recording Internet Explorer 7 or higher (for web application support IE version 9 or bit mode only) DVD-ROM drive required for installation Installation After reviewing the Recommended System requirements, and verifying that the computer either meets or exceeds these requirements, close all open windows and applications before beginning software installation. Insert the DVD into the DVD player and begin installation. The installation of Dragon Medical Practice Edition v2 can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. When you launch the software, you will be prompted to Register. It is recommended that you register the software. In the event that you cannot find your serial number, it can always be accessed from Nuance s registration site if you ve registered the software. The software will also prompt you for activation. You can activate automatically, activate manually, or activate later. If you have an Internet connection, it is recommended that you activate automatically. If you do not have an Internet connection, select Activate Manually. You will receive an activation code and will need to take this code to a computer that does have an Internet connection in order to complete activation. The Dragon software must be activated. If you choose to Activate Later, you will be able to launch the software 5 times. After the fifth time, you will be locked out of the software until you activate.

3 Page 3 of 7 Microphones The Dragon Medical Practice Edition v2 (full box) software is packaged with a Nuance approved USB headset microphone. It is recommended that if using a wired microphone that you use a USB microphone. If the microphone that you are using does not have a USB connection, and has 3.5mm jacks instead, it is recommended that you use a USB adapter to bypass the onboard computer sound card. Roaming User Profiles If you plan on using Dragon Medical Practice Edition v2 on multiple computers that have access to a shared networked location, it is recommended that you use a Roaming User Profile. A Roaming User Profile is saved on a shared networked location and allows you to access your profile from multiple computers. There is a proper way to create a Roaming User Profiles. Roaming User Profiles are condensed and smaller in size than Local User Profiles. Local User Profiles can tend to get quite large and if placed in a networked location they may have trouble opening, or not open at all. To create a Roaming User Profile, use the Roaming feature within the Administrative Settings of Dragon Medical Practice Edition v2 and follow these steps: 1. On your networked location, create a folder for your Roaming User Profile. (Map this location on each PC for ease and simplicity) 2. Create a Local User Profile (with the User Profile Creation Wizard). 3. Close the User Profile and on the DragonBar go to Tools > Administrative Settings. 4. On the Roaming tab, place a checkmark next to Enable under Roaming User Profile. 5. Click Add. 6. Enter a Display Name, such as Roaming User. Then, browse to your networked folder (created in Step 1). Click OK. 7. Before closing the Administrative Settings, place a checkmark in the option, Allow nonroaming user profiles to be opened. Click OK. 8. On the DragonBar, go to Profile > Manage User Profiles. 9. Select the Profile that you d like to save to the roaming location and select Advanced > Save to Roaming. 10. Once your profile has been saved to the roaming location, close the Manage Users Dialog, open the Administrative Settings and remove the checkmark from the option, Allow non-roaming user profiles to be opened.

4 Page 4 of On each of the other PCs that you would like to access your roaming profile from, go on the DragonBar to Tools > Administrative Settings > Roaming Tab (Enable) and Add your Roaming location. You will not need to do Steps 7-10 again. Once your profile has been saved to roaming, as soon as you point another PC to your Roaming location, Dragon will be able to see your profile. When (and How) to Make Corrections Correction to your transcribed dictation should be made when Dragon misrecognizes a word that you say. Dragon cannot make spelling errors, however it can misrecognize what you ve said. If you ve misspoken a word, it is not recommended that you make corrections. This could negatively affect your accuracy. Example of a misrecognition would be if you dictated, the patient presents today and Dragon typed, the patient reasons today. In this case, you would want to select the word reasons and correct it. Example of a misspoken word would be if you dictated, the patient presented today and you meant to dictate, the patient presents today and Dragon typed, the patient presented today. In this case, Dragon did not misrecognize what you said and you would not want to use the correction tools in Dragon to make corrections. In Dragon Medical Practice Edition v2, Dragon is able to learn from your keyboard corrections however, keyboard corrections (typing or speaking over a misrecognized word) will not affect your recognition accuracy as quickly as using the Correction Hotkey or Correction Options menu in Dragon. If Dragon misrecognizes a word, you can turn on your microphone and say, correct [word]. Dragon will highlight the word and give you the Correction Options menu. From this menu, you can say, select [number] (if the correct word is listed in the options next to a number), or spell that and you can then dictate or type the correct word. You can also make a correction by highlighting the word with your keyboard (or selecting it by voice) and using the Correction Hotkey (determined on the Hotkey tab in the Dragon Options located under Tools > Options > Hotkeys. You can also highlight the word with mouse (or by voice) and use the Correction button on the DragonBar s Extras Toolbar to make corrections.

5 Page 5 of 7 Accuracy Tuning Running the Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer When you create a new User Profile, you are prompted to select if you would like to run the Acoustic and Language Model Optimizer. It is recommended that you build and train your profile before setting the Optimizer to run on your User Profile. You can skip this option during User Profile creation and set it at a later date by going on the DragonBar to Tools > Administrative Settings > Scheduled Tasks. You can also run this task manually, and not on a schedule, by going on the DragonBar to Help > Improve my Accuracy and selecting Launch Accuracy Tuning now. Training Your Profile At the end of the New User Profile Creation Wizard you will be prompted to make a selection for General Training. You can choose to Show Training with Prompting, Show Training without Prompting, or Skip Training. Performing General Training will help Dragon analyze how you pronounce words. It is recommended to proceed with training, however you can choose to Skip Training and access it at another time. To access General Training after you ve created your User Profile, go on the DragonBar to Help > Improve My Accuracy > select Read text to train Dragon to your voice under Adjust your acoustics. Utilizing the Dictation Box There are two different ways that you can use the Dictation Box. You can use the Dictation Box when working with non-standard windows (non-standard windows are applications that do not have full text control when you are working with a non-standard window, the Text Control Indicator (checkmark on the DragonBar) will be gray instead of green), or in Hidden Mode. When you are working in a non-standard window, you may still be able to dictate directly into text areas, however Dragon may not always behave in the way which we would expect. To avoid any issues with non-standard windows, you can open the Dictation Box, dictate directly into the Dictation Box (including Custom Commands) and then place your cursor into the non-standard window and transfer text.

6 Page 6 of 7 You can also use the Dictation Box in Hidden Mode. Hidden Mode is a powerful Dragon tool that allows you to view and move between other applications while continuing to dictate without interruption. The dictation is placed into the Hidden Dictation Box (which now has a transparent option). When you have completed dictation, place your cursor into the text area where you would like to place the text and transfer text. Adding Words and Phrases to the Vocabulary Dragon Medical Practice Edition s vocabulary is expansive, yet sometimes you will come across the word that may not be in the vocabulary. If Dragon misrecognizes a word that you say, use the Correction options to make the proper corrections. If Dragon misrecognizes a word that you say, and the correct word is not available in the vocabulary (which is rare) you can add the word to the vocabulary. To add a word to the vocabulary, on the DragonBar select Vocabulary > Add new word or phrase. Type and train the word, so that Dragon knows how you pronounce the word. You can also add phrases. For example, everytime I say Dragon Medical Practice Edition I want Dragon to type DMPE (instead of the full name) I can add this information as a phrase. On the DragonBar, select Vocabulary > Add new word or phrase. When the dialog box appears I would add DMPE in the spell box and Dragon Medical Practice Edition in the spoken form box. Then I would train the pronunciation of DMPE. You should not add a word to the vocabulary that already exists in the vocabulary. For example, if you are having trouble with Dragon misrecognizing a certain word, and that word appears in the correction options, you should train the word and not try to re-add it to the vocabulary. Adding a word to the vocabulary that already exists will cause recognition accuracy issues. Creating a Backup of the User Profile By default, Dragon will backup your User Profile after every 5 th save of the profile. The backup folder is located in the same folder at the Current folder. Dragon utilizes the files in the Current folder to access your User Profile. However, if something were to happen to the Current folder, Dragon would allow you to perform a Restore from the Backup folder. Although Dragon creates an automatic backup of your User Profile, it is highly recommended that you backup your User Profile to removable media or another computer. In the event that your computer crashes, or corruption occurs at the root level of the User Profile, you will need to have a backup of the User Profile on a separate location.

7 Page 7 of 7 To backup your User Profile to a different location, you can launch Dragon, close your User Profile and on the DragonBar select Profile > Manage User Profiles > select your Profile > Advanced > Export and browse to the backup location (ex: flash drive). You can also redirect Dragon to create the Backup folder in another location. To do this, on the DragonBar, go to Tools > Administrative Settings > Miscellaneous tab and change the default location under Backup location for user profiles. Please note that if you direct the new Backup location to be on removable media the removable media must be available in order for the profile to backup. If you remove the flash drive, for example, Dragon cannot access that location to create a new backup. Also, please note that Roaming User Profiles will not create an automatic backup file through Dragon. Roaming User Profiles are condensed so that they can be easily accessed and transferred across a network, therefore the profiles do not have all of the available folders that a full Local User Profile does. One of the folders that a Roaming User Profile does not have is the Backup folder. For Roaming User Profiles, you must export a copy of the Profile as a backup.
