3 Welcome Orbx would like to thank you for purchasing FTX Global openlc (Europe), which is the culmination of over two years of R&D and data development. FTXG openlc as the name suggests, replaces the default Landclass layer with higher detailed and a better variety of land types, which then creates more varied and accurate terrain. FTXG openlc also include many new custom textures, used in addition to those installed with the Base Pack. The version of openlc you have is specifically designed to work with both FTX Global BASE and FTX Global Vector as part of a total simulator overhaul. What FTX Global openlc does: If you are reading this User Guide you have likely already installed openlc and perhaps taken your first flight to discover the difference. Landclass data is the way the simulator knows what all the land is being used for and tells the simulator what type of ground should go where, for example: Forest, City, Agriculture, Desert, Docks, Grassland, etc. The simulators come with a global default coverage of landclass data, but many areas contain missing or in-accurate data. FTXG openlc plans to change that. So the difference between what you had before and after openlc is quite remarkable; we like to compare it to a complete simulator upgrade, similar to the huge improvement FTX Global BASE s textures provided. 4 Orbx FTX Global is required for full functionality FTX Global openlc is specifically designed for FTX Global BASE, and calls many textures only found in that product. Attempting to use openlc with default textures or other third party texture products is not supported and will lead to unpredictable results Here's what is required to run this scenery as Orbx designed it to: PRODUCT Version(s) Why Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) Standard Edition Deluxe Edition Acceleration Addon Pack (not a stand-alone product) Gold Edition (which includes all three versions above) The base product required. All Orbx products are made for FSX/P3D and don't run by themselves. If you don't have FSX already, the best version to purchase would be the Gold Edition, which already includes all versions and service packs SP1 and SP2. OR Lockheed Martin Prepar3D (P3D) Academic Version Developer Network Program Professional License Orbx FTX Global (Download) This is a downloadable FTX pack which you can purchase from the Orbx fullterrain.com website. 5 Quick Installation Guide The Orbx FTX Global openlc uses the flightsimstore.com FSS security wrapper to validate your order number, registration code and order date which then recognizes your legitimate purchase of the software and unencrypts the installer files and proceeds with the installation. STEP INSTRUCTIONS 1 Unzip the FlightSimStore.com (FSS) downloaded ZIP file. NOTE: You cannot run the install from inside the ZIP file. Always extract it to a separate folder on your desktop before running the installer executable. 2 Run the installer app. It should be named something like OrbxFTXopenLC_EU100.exe 3 Fill in the Order Number, Date and Key when requested. This information would have been ed to you when you purchased the download of openlc from FSS. To ensure accuracy you can copy and paste the data from your received from FSS. 4 The wrapper will unwrap the Orbx installer, which will then run and present the opening installation screen. Please acknowledge the EULA page and continue. You cannot choose a destination folder, since all Orbx products are installed into the ORBX folder in the simulator root folder 6 Once the file copy process is complete, the installer automatically adds in the Scenery Library entries and you re ready to fly. There is no configuration tool to use, openlc is a simple install and forget product that upgrades the entire world without the need to use any tools. 6 The openlc EU areas The openlc Europe package is broken into 10 folders based on geographic location. The following maps show what area is covered by the relevant EU folder name, ranging from EU1 to EU10. The openlc folders are located in the ORBX\FTX_OLC folder. 10 How does openlc fit with FTX Global BASE? If you are new to FTX Global and have purchased openlc you ll probably want to know what the FTX Global BASE product does within FSX/P3D. This was released back in July 2013 and upgrades the entire simulator s TEXTURES worldwide, more specifically: Replaces all the default landclass textures located in \Scenery\World\Texture with custom Orbx FTX textures Installs FTX Central and other supporting apps into the \ORBX folder. FTX Central and these other apps help manage all Orbx addons including FTXG, FTX Regions and FTX Airports Adds 3D lights to all vector main roads all over the world. These can be turned on and off using FTX Central Makes corrections to the base landclass for some parts of the world, particularly in SE Asia and the USA SW area Adds zero-fps hit 3D lights to all textures all over the world. So what openlc does is enhance the new textures with much better landclass representation, telling the simulator what type of textures to place in a certain area. 11 FTX Central and Hybrid Mode FTX Central is the one-stop application that controls all aspects of Orbx's FTX regions and airports as you purchase and install them for FSX/P3D. It's an easy to use tool that provides convenient access to the user manuals and any Control Panels that come with FTX airports, plus other utilities in the Tools menu. If you do not have any FTX Regions installed, simply click on FTX Global and Apply Group to fully activate all the Global and openlc features If you do have FTX Regions installed and wish to fly between them and Global, tick/check the Enable hybrid mode box Orbx FTX Global openlc Europe Version 1.20 User Guide September 2015 Page 11

12 If you intend to spend some time flying within the boundaries of an Orbx FTX Region then you will use the Region Exclusive Mode Simply select the FTX Region (in this example, North America), and Apply Group. Other scenery elements that you may wish to activate will be Orbx Trees or FTX TreesHD (if installed).you may optionally choose to enable the Vector Road Lights, which adds 3D lights for all main arterial roads worldwide. 13 Scenery Library Insertion Points After openlc is installed, the scenery library entries are enabled for you. As openlc is a Global addon, it will place itself at the highest priority. If you do have FTX Regions installed, you will need to manually manage its position in the scenery library. You can use the Scenery Library Insertion Point tool for this and it is designed to be used easily. This can be found under Settings>Tools in FTX Central. Your FTX Regions and Airports are all grouped under FTX and can be moved by clicking and dragging. It is important that the FTX block be set above your openlc entries, as shown below. 16 Orbx FTX openlc Worldwide Regions The diagram below shows how openlc will be rolled out across the world beginning with Europe (1), followed by North America (2) and so on. In this way, rather than make you wait a year or two to have a single worldwide openlc landclass installer, we re releasing each pack separately so you can complete the FTXG layers for major parts of the world as we go along. Since Orbx has committed to FSX, P3D 1.x and P3D 2.x your investment in the FTXG family will continue to bear fruit if you decide to move your core simulator platform. Once you purchase any of the FTXG products its license is valid for all three simulator platforms; there is no need to pay for a new license for P3D 2.0 for example. In this way we are building a platform for the future that embraces existing FSX technology and also allows the freedom to move to future new platforms that leverage DX11 and the latest GPU technology. 17 Compatibility Notes Please visit for the latest compatibility information between FTX Global openlc and third party addons. UTX Europe (UTX) FTX Global openlc competes with UTX since we replace landclass data contained in UTX. You have a lot of configuration options available using the UTX configuration tool and we recommend you take time to explore what works best when FTXG and openlc are combined. SceneryTech (ST)/Cloud9 (XClass)/Other Landclass products If using XClass Europe or ST Europe Landclass, note that openlc Europe is a direct competitor and is not designed to work with them. You can keep using SceneryTech and other landclass addons that are outside of the openlc Europe coverage. GROUND ENVIRONMENT X (GEX) GEX is a default texture replacement product just like FTX Global and provides its own unique textures using a vastly different color palette. Additionally, openlc calls many custom textures contained in FTX Global which GEX simply does not contain, or which will have the incorrect color tone. FTX Global BASE is required to work with openlc, since they were designed to work together seamlessly. THIRD PARTY TERRAIN MESH openlc does not include any terrain mesh files. Mesh is used to provide the definition of mountains and undulating terrain so the smaller the distance between each mesh point (the resolution), the better defined these features look in the simulator. We recommend you check the compatibility forum in the link above or the FTX forums to research what the best terrain mesh product is for openlc. Orbx has also partnered with PILOT s who have released a download version of their worldwide FSGlobal2010 Mesh product, called the FTX Edition. This is the mesh product Orbx beta testers used when testing openlc and although it is not required or mandatory, it s a quick solution to provide a worldwide mesh which you can purchase and download from the flightsimstore.com this is a ~24GB download though so be aware that s a lot of data! 18 Quick Reference Settings The table below lists in a handy reference the minimum recommended settings required in FSX/P3D to enjoy openlc the way Orbx designed it. These settings run well on most PCs. If you use the settings below you will enjoy a high fidelity experience and good performance. Setting Value Why? 19 The Autogen Density Slider Because FTX Global BASE + openlc uses much denser, more accurately placed autogen objects in its annotation, having it set to Extremely Dense in large cities like Paris, London or Frankfurt will bring even the most powerful PC to its knees. We won't mince our words FTX Global combined with openlc is not designed to give you a 60FPS experience with all sliders maxed. The key thing to remember is that FTXG is designed to be used both today and in the FUTURE, meaning that we did not cripple the product on release to cater for a broad range of PCs, but rather created a standard that will be enjoyed by most people as hardware catches up. Here's a simple table* which should be used as a guide for the Autogen Density slider. If you adhere to these slider settings in FTXG you will get a good balance between visuals and performance.
