Garg, M.Com., Ph.D. THE COLLEGE Government College, Sector 11, Chandigarh was established in It was shifted to its present campus in From a sapling, it has grown into a leading institution having its own distinct impress on the educational and cultural life of the city beautiful. It now imparts instruction in Humanities, Computer Application, Biotechnology (Three Year Course), Science, Commerce, Business Administration and Post-graduation in English and Information Science. Within each faculty, we have a rich variety of subject combinations and Honours in 9 disciplines. The college is affiliated to Panjab University for graduate and postgraduate courses. Information Technology Programme (C-TOSS) has also been started for imparting I.T. Education in collaboration with SPIC, Chandigarh and I.T. Department, Chandigarh Administration. In recognition of its outstanding all round performance the college has been accredited with B++ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Three Add on courses viz. (1) Journalism (2) Video Reporting (3) Video Editing have been introduced in the Department of English. The college faculty comprises 87 members. As many as 39 members are Ph.Ds. and 29 are M. Phils. The college caters to the need of not only a cross section of students of Chandigarh but also to the students of rest of India. With its highly-qualified faculty, impressive and commodious buildings, well-stocked library, well-equipped science laboratories, sprawling playgrounds and hostels with all modern amenities, the college has the infrastructure of a Premier Institution. The creative qualities of the students are developed and polished through positive activities such as public speaking, dramatics, sports and creative writing. The spirit of discipline and regularity is developed through N.C.C. and N.S.S. activities. The N.S.S. units train the students in public welfare activities. Talent Hunt contests are organized every year to harness the artistic and creative talents of the students. The college also organises two blood donation camps every year, generally in collaboration with P.G.I Blood Bank Society. The reading habit among the students is inculcated through the college library. The young minds are encouraged to read and ruminate as an open shelf system exists in the college library. The feeling of tolerance and brotherhood is fostered through a series of lectures by eminent persons from all walks of life. The college also holds debates and declamation contests and organises paper reading contests on Science, Arts, Commerce and Literature. The college imparts broad-based education, as a cross-section of our student community has the distinction of now occupying coveted positions in education, medicine, administration, defence services, engineering and industry. Many of them have been trend setters for the present generation of students. In short, the college provides a spectrum of academic and other activities in tune with the metropolitan nature of Chandigarh, the city being an epicentre of educational landscape in Northern India 39

5 ELIGIBILITY AND SUBJECT COMBINATIONS POST-GRADUATE COURSES M.Sc. (IT) (PART I & II) (Co-educational) The admission to M.Sc. (IT) Ist Semester will be as per P.U. rules and regulations. For details of subjects please refer to the page of Self Financing Courses. (M.A. I, II ENGLISH) (Co-educational) Admission is open for both Boys and Girls to M.A. I/II English. (i) (ii) (iii) The department has got one of the best infrastructure available for M.A. teaching. It has a separate special room in the college library where students can sit and study during the vacant periods. The department has also a special Computer Room which has the latest state of the art computer with internet facility. Excellent discipline is maintained in the department and teachers are available throughout the working hours in the department. (iv) Eminent teachers are invited to deliver lectures on various papers being taught in the department. Quiz and seminars are organized throughout the session. (v) Leading journals on literature such as TLS, MFS, Literary Criterion, Sewanee Review etc. are available in the library. Online journals are also downloaded from Foreign Universities sites. (vi) Students who have passed B.A. will be admitted as per P.U. Rules & Regulations. (vii) Students who have passed B.Sc./B.Com. or other equivalent examination with at least 50% marks are eligible for admission to M.A. I (English). P.U. Rules and regulations for admission to M.A.I, II are applicable here. (viii) M. A. II (English) course is open to those who have passed M. A. I (English) from P.U. The tutor will maintain a record of the student s conduct, health, attendance and progress in studies as well as his participation in co-curricular activities. Tutorial group meetings will be held as notified by the Principal from time to time. Students are advised to see the notice board daily. N.C.C. Facility for participation in the National Cadet Corps (Army Wing, Naval Wing and Air Wing) is available for the students. Students are prepared for B and C Certificate examinations so that they may avail themselves of reserved seats in the I.M.A. meant for N.C.C. C certificate holders. It is meant to inculcate a spirit of co-operation and social work among the students. The colleges hold various camps in the suburb areas of Chandigarh where students interact with the village folk and the colony residents to impart adult education, environment and AIDS awareness and also to create awareness against social evils. NSS, both for boy and girl students, exists in the college. 44
7 COLLEGE HOSTEL There are three hostels in this college. These hostels are modern in concept and design, having the latest amenities. Mostly with cubicles, these hostels have common rooms and guest rooms and amenities like T.Vs. and newspapers, ceiling fans, geysers, watercoolers, public telephones, indoor and outdoor games, canteens and mess. Each hostel has a teacher warden and supporting staff. A candidate should apply for Hostel seat alongwith Admission Form of the college on the prescribed form. Old residents should apply afresh for admission. Their merit and their conduct in the hostel in the previous session will be taken into consideration. For old residents of the hostel, it is notified that the admission to the hostel is not a matter of right. Students seeking admission to the hostels are expected to read all the rules and regulations printed on the back of the hostel admission form. Also binding on them shall be the rules and regulations notified from time to time. A resident student can be asked to vacate the hostel in case of misconduct. Admission to the hostel will be as per rules and regulations. Special care is taken of the general well-being of the resident students. Every resident student must strictly abide by the Hostel Rules. Note :- Parents must accompany a student who seeks admission to the hostel for the first time. Note :- Details of the hostel rules are mentioned in the Hostel Admission Forms of the college. HOSTEL RULES 1. For Hostel Admission application on the prescribed form (available in the hostel) is to be made in the student s handwriting and will be dealt with by the Hostel Warden. 2. Allotment of rooms in the Hostel will be made strictly according to the rules framed by the college. 3. A hostel resident is required to attend 50% of lectures delivered per month failing which he/she will have to vacate his/her hostel room. 4. Possession and consuming of liquor and other intoxicants in the hostel shall entail expulsion from the hostel. 5. All the residents are required to take their meals in the hostel mess. Minimum charges of 40 meals per month will be charged from each resident. 6. No resident will pass on the key of his/ her room to another resident or to an outsider. 7. Internal locks/latch locks are not permitted to be installed in the hostel rooms. 8. If a resident absents himself/herself from classes in the colleges for seven days continuously without prior permission then he/she will be asked to vacate the hostel seat. 9. A resident whose name has been struck off from the college rolls for any reason will have to vacate the hostel seat. 10. Hostel seat is allotted only for one academic year. 45

Instructions. The latest instructions will be displayed on the college Notice Board). Note 1 : Practical Examination has been introduced in the subject of Philosophy from the session Note 2 :A student would offer Mathematics only if he has passed the subject in the qualifying examination or qualifies in the subject as a deficient/additional subject from concerned Board/University/Council in the Supplementary Examination subsequent to the admission. Note 4 : A screening test will be held for the students opting for Music Vocal. Those who do not qualify the test will be asked to change the subject. Note 5 : A student cannot opt for more than two subjects having practicals. Note 6 : No student is allowed to change his subject while filling Panjab University Examination Form for April 2008, Examinations. ADD ON COURSES Department of English runs one year Add on courses in (1) Journalism (2) Video Reporting (3) Video Editing. Annual examination for these courses is conducted by the Panjab University and qualifying students would be given certificate/diploma by Panjab University. (i) Senior Secondary Certificate Part-II examination or +2 of recognized board / council/ university with 45% marks in aggregate (ii) Certificate in Physical Education of two year duration with a minimum of 45% marks from any recognized university / institution on any other equivalent qualification recognized by the PU Chandigarh. (iii) The candidate should not be more than the age of 21years on 1 st Sep However age may be relaxed upto 22 years in the case of National / International position holder sports student for the admission and for those who belong to recognized scheduled castes/ scheduled tribes. Provided that a candidate considered for admission under any of the above clause ( i ) to ( iii) qualifies in the standard Physical Fitness /Efficiency Test at the time of admission to this course and scores 45% marks in aggregate out of 60 marks of six test items. (iv) The merit for the admission to the first year of the Bachelor of Physical Education (B.P. Ed.) shall be prepared on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying examination, fitness test with due weightage in the field of sports / NCC / NSS and proficiency in the game of choice etc. as per the guidelines of the Chandigarh Administration / Panjab University, Chandigarh. (v) The reservation policy will be followed as per the guidelines of the Chandigarh Administration (UT). 2. Period for Completing the Course No student shall be allowed to spend more than 6 years in the entire Four Year Degree Course in Physical Education.
