G. The TAC technology. G.I. Introduction TAC stands for Total Airflow Control. It is based on the construction of airflow models that can be materialized using the latest motor developments like General Electric s ECM motor. We at PLC have applied this technology to the airflow control technology, and have come out with the standard DDTAC fan series, and with the know-how to develop tailor made special applications for our customers. DD 9-7 TH TAC2 1/2 DD 9-7 TH TAC2 1/ TAC(d+n)2: Constant airflow and working range TACn2: Constant pressure ( V)CFP mode The motor s working principle lies on the control of its working point - the motor is able to communicate reliable data which can then be used to calculate its working point -, and its very high efficiency. It is a DC permanent magnet motor, but AC powered in 115 or 23V, 5 or 6 Hz. The motor is equipped with an electronic module controlling the rotor commutation, calculating its working point, and communicating it to the outside. The experience gathered by PLC in this field since 1993 applied to air moving technology, makes us the leader in the application of this technology on the European market. Intelligent motor, intelligent fan The ECM motor is able to communicate instant accurate information on the motor s working point. Using these information, we have built airflow models allowing instantaneous calculation of the fan s actual working point. The result of these developments is available in the TAC product line. Very high efficiency. The motor s conversion from electrical energy into mechanical energy is very efficient whatever the rotation speed. It will range from 6 to 85% for a rotation speed between 3 rpm and 18 rpm. Economical = Ecological (+ efficiency = - power consumption = - heat loss = - cooling load = + ecological). The product is specifically developed for energy savings. To illustrate this, consider the real application we efficiency (%) Motor efficiency Rotation speed DTC G TAC GB.doc- 2/13

developed for one of our customers: the energy electrical consumption was reduced by 6% to 5% in regard of the working point (see graphic). On top of the direct energy saving, there is an indirect one: less electrical consumption means less heat loss and thus in certain cases less cooling load. Less cooling load could mean air conditioning savings, in power consumption and also in investment (smaller units). TAC technology represents a concrete result of the industry s search for better, more eco-responsible products, and concern for the global warming threat brought forward at the Kyoto conference. typical Power power consumption comparison between AC AC and TAC ECM technology AC TAC Extra comfort The extra comfort for the end user results from a lower noise level than with normal airflow control technologies: - because the motor is energized by direct current (while being supplied in alternative current), - because of controllable progressive airflow variations, - and finally because the motor does not use a triac technology type of speed variation to change the working point. In a practical development, in the night position (2% of nominal airflow) the sound level went from 39 dba to 31 dba (pressure at 1,5 m) while using TAC technology instead of traditional technology. What s new? Everything is new, but mainly the idea to combine top state of the art technologies in each domain: high motor efficiency (DC technology), the computational technology (calculate a working point, without sensors), the control technology (without frequency controllers, electronic commutation,..), and the idea to bring all these developments together to make one standard product. The competition is still working hard to match this accomplishment. Applications The characteristics of the fan make it an important step forward in a lot of different fields where forced, controlled airflow is an issue. On top of that the energy saving it can generate can justify in itself the decision to switch over from traditional AC/triac or frequency controller technology to TAC technology, the rest is then just extra. Our customers apply the TAC fan in applications as different as gas or fuel fired furnaces, air handling units, heat pumps, laminar airflow cabinets, mechanical ventilation units (with and without heat recovery),... Specific developments One of our missions is to develop airflow control systems to meet our customer s specific requirements for their application. Our engineers have at their disposal a complete laboratory containing two fully automated airflow chambers, one anechoic acoustic chamber with all the required measuring devices, CAD/CAM, professional software, and all the necessary equipment to develop the best configuration compromise between available components, available price, and available budget - thus responding to the customer s needs. This mission aims for integrators for whom it is important to be able to pilot their fans using analogical (/1V) or digital signals and/or for whom global efficiency of their product is a preponderant factor in their product definition. Standard developments We defined a range of standard fans using the TAC technology, with airflows ranging from 9 to 57. This standard range exists in two different control versions (TACd2, TACn2), each one responding to situations, and with the possibility to switch from one control type to the other by simply replacing the control box (within the same generation). DTC G TAC GB.doc- 3/13

These products aim for the small batches and the distribution market because they are available in any quantities and provide the customer with all the TAC features: high efficiency, digital or analogical communication, constant airflow, alarms on pressure, on motor failure, etc. What advantages for each intervening party? For the designer: Integrating top state of the art technology, thus designing a top state of the art product. Satisfied customers. For the installer: Strongly reduced tuning time Cheap airflow control components and power components More margins to be more competitive. For the maintenance contractor: Simple, easy and quick diagnostics. Accurate, foreseeable interventions that can be planned. Tele-maintenance via modem. More margins to be more competitive. For the OEM: A more competitive product, with lots of extra sales arguments. Less regulation costs, with more long-term quality. Possibility to individualize the production process (each fan can be programmed). Special features (display of airflow pressure, alarms) and remote diagnostics,.. For the paying end user: Substantial energy savings on the electrical bill, lower investments at equivalent functions, lower functioning costs, plus all of the advantages stated above. The two standard control versions The TACd control, for simplicity The d control is TAC as simple as it gets. The user chooses one airflow out of a series of available airflows by setting dipswitches. The fan will then deliver this airflow independently from the network s pressure drop. The user will take advantage of the TAC s low energy consumption and will see his energy bill drop dramatically. This control also allows to be configured in multi-airflows, and to detect and warn of certain events (static pressure rise or drop, motor failure, motor incompatibility ) The TACn control, all the power of control of a network and digital control. The TACn control enables a fan to be connected to a PC via an RS485 interface and specifically developed PC software. The standard softwares (EOLe2 and EOLe2_SA) enable the user to know exactly what each fan is doing actual airflow, static pressure, rotation speed, absorbed watts etc - but also to change the instructions given to each fan. The system also allows to work by modem and thus to control the fans at a distance. We are also ready to discuss with people interested in integrating this feature in their own software. The possibilities are endless Other features of the TAC2 product range: 3 Alarm systems are built in Both d and n versions of the TAC2 product range have 3 alarms built in. They have the same function, it s just the way they are configured that is different. In the d version it is done using dipswitches and an initial pressure trigger, in the n version filling in a form when connected to a specific fan does it. Indication of a certain pressure variation, Indication of a motor failure, Indication of an initialization problem. DTC G TAC GB.doc- 4/13

Analogical output signals representing airflow and pressure Both d and n versions of the TAC2 product range have 2 output signals ( / 4,5 V) representing with great accuracy the actual airflow and the actual pressure at which the fan is working. This can be used as a control system of the working point (with a voltmeter), or as a system to display this working point with a viewer (or a digital display system). Softstop/start the motor It is strongly advised, and made very easy in the TAC2 product range to start or stop the fan using the softstop/start function. It is a sort of standby position where the fan is put on hold, just like a television set. The power consumption when in standby is less than,5w. Interchangeable control boxes The TAC2 fans enable to separate the control box from the fan, making it more flexible and practical to configure. The fan is delivered with its power box mounted on the housing. The control boxes (d or n) are delivered separately, as well as a connecting cable between the power box and the control box with RJ45 connectors. Generation2 fans have interchangeable control boxes. 9 G.III A fully detailed selection software We have developed a specific software to determine the exact performances of each fan for a specific working point. A complete and accurate data sheet can be printed out for each selection. The estimated noise level can be simulated in the exact room configuration. The software is available and free of charge for our TAC fans customers. G.IV. TACd2: the «discrete» choice. The d choice is TAC as simple as it can get, but with all the important TAC features present. It is characterized by a discrete choice of the requested airflow. (From there the name TAC discrete), and by the fact that all the TAC2 alarm features are present. You can choose one out of 31 airflows: The 5 first dipswitches are used to select one main airflow from 31 available airflows, by selecting one of the 31 combinations of switch position. See the table for each fan in the appropriate technical data sheet. Each chosen airflow can be used to configure a multi airflow fan. Each main airflow chosen from the 31 main airflows can be used to determine a 3 constant airflows fan. The multipliers are fixed at 1%, 66% or 33% and can be activated by a simple contact type wiring (contacts, clock, thermostat ) or an EDSB4 airflow selector. So, for example, if you choose 15 as your main airflow, you can get a 15/1/5/ fan, whatever the counter pressure. Applications The d2 is perfect for installers who wish to take advantage of the fantastic features of the TAC fan, without having to master the basic computer knowledge necessary to use the «n» version. It is perfect for stand-alone air handling units. DTC G TAC GB.doc- 9/13

G.V. TACn2 the «connected» choice G.V.1 TACn2, you see it all The n version ( n stands for network) of the TAC2 control devices enables transparency and full control of the fan. The control algorithms are physically located in the control board, and instantly identify the working point of the fan. All that s done in the n version is to communicate these information to a PC via a RS485 network. The user can then use this information to visualize, modify, and process according to his needs. You can either choose to use your TACn2 fan as an element in a fan network, Permanent Network Configuration ( NC ), or as an individual fan you want to configure to work as you decide, the Stand Alone Configuration ( SAC ). Each fan can be software configured to have its own behavior. The TACn2 is designed to maintain constant a certain (chosen) airflow. You can determine this airflow once and for all, or you can create a certain link between the airflow you want and the value of a /1V sensor, or ask the fan to adapt its airflow to maintain a certain /1V-sensor value constant. The parameters are set with a PC running adequate software through a RS485 network. We have retained 6 working modes applicable to the 2 different working configurations (NC and SAC). The 6 modes require different parameters to be set (see G.V.3). G.V.2. Permanent or Temporary Network configuration (NC, TNC) and Stand Alone Configuration (SAC) NC/TNC Features This type of configuration is designed for all applications where each fan has to be monitored from one central location, whether locally or remotely located. In this last case a modem is probably required. Example: supermarkets, business offices, hotels, production plants, etc see schematic -An FPI RS232 - RS485 interface is required between the PC and the network. -Each fan has its own address on the network (using dip-switches 2 to 8). You can connect up to 128 fans per line and up to 255 lines per network, or configure one fan in a stand alone mode. -In a NC configuration, the PC - Inte - TACn2 control box link is constantly present. When using a modem a TNC configuration is generally used. -We have developed our own software EOLe2 to enable all the standard functions and more: EOLe2 is a user friendly software that enables to configure each fan to work in the desired mode, and to configure the parameters that will make the fan work as required: set timetables, use online sensor values to define new assignments, visualize working points, monitor the network for alarms on pressure, motor failure, communication failure, diagnostics, etc DTC G TAC GB.doc- 1/13

SAC Features This configuration is designed for all applications where each fan has to be configured individually, but it is not wished to have an on line status. Typical applications are the setup of an AHU fan, or setup of fans in a production line. See schematic. - An RS232 - RS485 interface is required between the PC and the network. - Each fan has an address x- (only one fan connected) - The PC - Interface - TACn2 control box link is only present when configuring/reading out the fan s parameters or working point, starting up an installation or when controlling it for maintenance or setup modification. - We have developed our own software EOLe2_SA to enable all the standard functions and more: EOLe2_SA is a user friendly software that enables to configure each fan to work in the desired mode, and to configure the parameters that will make the fan work as required: use online sensor values to define new assignments, visualize working point, monitor the alarm on pressure, motor failure, communication failure, diagnostics, etc DTC G TAC GB.doc- 11/13

G.V.3. Definition of the 6 working modes: CA, LS, CS, CFP, VCS, and CFP We have retained 6 different working modes, each corresponding to a different aeraulic «behavior». Each fan can have a different behavior, whether working in NC, TNC or SAC. The EOLe2 or EOLe2_SA software can be used to configure the mode of each fan: Name Description 1 CA Constant Airflow. Example: You want to ventilate a building with constant airflows: 1 between 6AM et 9AM, 7 between 9AM and 7PM, 14 between 7PM and 11PM, 58 between 11PM and 6AM. 2 LS Constant Airflow is modulated by /1V signal (Link to Signal). Example: You want to ventilate a conference room by relating the airflow exhausted to the CO2 air content 3 CS Constant Airflow is modulated to keep a certain sensor value constant. (Constant Signal). Example: Constant pressure: the fan is instructed to keep constant a certain pressure (or temperature, or CO2 content ) measured by a sensor. It will modulate its airflow to fulfill the assignment. 4 CFP Constant Airflow is modulated to keep a certain computed fan static pressure constant. (Constant Fan (static) Pressure). Example: The fan is constantly calculating its working point: which means also its total static pressure. It can be instructed to keep a certain pressure assignment constant (without the use of external sensors.). Be careful, this is not exactly equivalent to the CS mode when the sensor measures pressure. 5 VCS Constant Airflow is modulated to keep an assigned sensor value constant, this assignment is itself subjected to another sensor value. (Variable Constant Signal). Example: apartment ventilation, the pressure assignment is subjected to outside temperature The fan must maintain a certain pressure constant to ventilate apartments, but the value of this assignment is subjected to the outside temperature. The colder it is, the less ventilation there must be in the apartments. The TACn2 is connected to a T sensor, it is configured to define the relationship between T and Pa, the resulting assignment is carried out using a pressure sensor also connected to the TACn2 control box. Schematic: T M T T (signal /1V) T m VCS P (signal /1V) P m P R P M P R P VCFP P (TAC2 calculated static fan pressure ) Action on airflow to keep P = P R 6 VCFP Constant Airflow is modulated to keep constant an assigned calculated fan static pressure, this assignment is itself subjected to another sensor value. (Variable Constant Fan (static) Pressure). Example: apartment ventilation, the assignment is subjected to outside temperature The fan must maintain a certain pressure constant to ventilate apartments, but the value of this assignment is subjected to the outside T. The colder it is, the less ventilation there must be in the apartments. The TACn2 is connected to a T sensor, it is configured to define the relationship between T and Pa, the resulting assignment is carried out using the calculated fan static pressure.
