2 Dear Educator, Thank you for taking the time to peruse Step-by-Step Classroom Music. This grade 1 music curriculum has been created for a classroom teacher to deliver a General Music program. Step-by-Step Classroom Music teacher resources contain full lesson plans with clearly specified curriculum expectations at top of each lesson. The music lesson plans give extra explanation and teacher notes and have blackline masters and tests for students. In grade 1 the fundamentals of music are taught and in each successive year they are reviewed and built upon. If you have found us via this pdf document, we encourage you to visit the website: to look at our other music curriculum products in this series and to view our SMART board music lessons and the new online music composition application. 8 Lesson five TOPIC: Using oral prompts to understand the concept of a quarter note and its relationship to a 2/4 musical measure. CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS: Students will C1.1 Sing songs in unison and play simple accompaniments for music from a wide variety of diverse cultures, styles and historical periods C1.2 Apply the elements of music when singing, playing, and moving C1.5 Demonstrate understanding that sounds can be represented by symbols OBJECTIVE: MATERIALS: By the end of the lesson, students will demonstrate the use of a quarter note by clapping, counting and applying oral prompts to a rhythm pattern written in 2/4 time. Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star Lyric Sheet Track 7 Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star Track 8 Tapping to Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star Bar Line Card 2/4 Time Signature Card 2/4 Quarter Note Measure Card Rhythm Card 1 Quarter Note Clapping in 2/4 Time Beat Card 1 Track 9 Counting Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, in 2/4 Time Rhythm Card 2 Counting with Oral Prompts Track 10 Clapping in 2/4 Time with Oral Prompts Track 11 Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star with Metronome LESSON RATIONALE: It is important to understand that music is a language and that as a language it has syntax. One way to think of this syntax is to view musical notes as letters. Just as letters are put together to create words, notes are put together to create musical measures. Just as some words have more letters than others, so too, do some measures have more notes than others. The focus of this lesson is on performing musical rhythms in 2/4 time. Note that there are two parts to this lesson; therefore, it may take more than one period to achieve the objective. SUGGESTED LESSON SEQUENCE: 1. Tell the students that they will be listening to and singing along with a popular song Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. 2. Play Track 7 Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star and have the students sing along with it. 20

9 Lesson five 3. Explain to the students that they will be focusing on two aspects of the song: the beat and the rhythm. 4. Explain that the beat of the song is the steady pulse that goes throughout the song. Sometimes this pulse is heard and sometimes it is not, but it is always present. We can keep the beat of a song by tapping our foot in a steady fashion along with the song. The beat is one of the most important parts of the song because it is the foundation for the rhythm. 5. We can represent a beat musically using a quarter note. Each quarter note has the value of one beat. Below is an example of two quarter notes. q q 6. The rhythm is played around the beat. Sometimes it is on the beat and sometimes it is in between beats. Sometimes, there is silence, which is also part of the rhythm. When we clap along with what we are singing we are clapping the rhythm of the song. For additional instruction on beat and rhythm, review the concepts of beat and rhythm from Teachers Choice/ Step-by-Step core manuals. 7. Play Track 8 and have the students tap their feet along with the beat. The students tapping pattern should be consistent. There should not be any pause or break in the pattern. See below: Twin kle, Twin kle, Lit tle, Star Tap tap Tap tap Tap tap Tap tap 8. In the pattern above, notice that we continue to tap even when there is no lyric. In this case the beat goes on, but the rhythm rests. We can represent the beat with a quarter note each time we tap our foot. Twin kle, Twin kle, Lit tle, Star Tap tap Tap tap Tap tap Tap tap q q q q q q q q 9. Show Bar Line Card and tell the students that when songs are written using notes, the notes are grouped into measures. Each measure begins and ends with a bar line. 10. Tell the students that at the beginning of a song, there is a time signature, which tells the musician how many beats are in each measure. 21

10 Lesson five 11. Explain to the students that the time signature has two numbers, one on top and one on the bottom. The top number tells us how many beats are in each measure in the song. A time signature of 2/4 has two beats in each measure. Show the students the 2/4 Time Signature Card and point out the top number. Tell them that this is the number that indicates the number of beats in the measure. 12. Explain to the students that they can tell when a new measure is beginning because the first beat in the measure is accented, which means that it sounds louder than the rest of the notes in the measure. The last note in the measure is always a soft beat. Therefore, in 2/4 time, each measure contains one loud and one soft beat. A new measure begins whenever they hear the louder beat. In the case of 2/4 time the repetition is every second beat Strong Beat q Weak Beat q 13. Show students the 2/4 Quarter -Note Measure Card, and explain to them that a quarter note has the value of one beat. (This is conveyed by the bottom number of the time signature; a four on the bottom of the time signature tells us that the quarter note is worth one beat). Therefore, in 2/4 time, there must be two quarter notes in each measure. Remind the students that the first quarter note is the loudest note in the measure and that the second quarter note is the quietest in the measure. 14. Play Track 9 Counting Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, in 2/4 Time. Have half the students in the class sing the song while clapping the Rhythm (See Rhythm Card 1) and the other half of the class tap and count along with the beat (See Beat Card 1). (Switch and repeat.) Be sure that the students who are tapping, are accenting the first beat in the measure when they say one, and that they are tapping softer on beat two. Part2 USING THE ORAL PROMPTS TO UNDERSTAND RHYTHM 15. Sometimes children find it easier to recognize the value of different notes through oral prompts. The word that is associated with the quarter note is Ta. Show Rhythm Card 2 Counting with Oral Prompts, and play Track 10 Clapping in 2/4 Time with Oral Prompts and have them listen to the oral prompts count. 22

11 Lesson five 16. Replay Track 10 Clapping in 2/4 Time with Oral Prompts and have the students clap and mimic the track. Be sure that they are accenting the first beat in the measure when they say Ta, and that they are clapping softer on beat two ta. 17. Have half of the students in the class sing the song while tapping the beat (with their foot on the floor) and the other half of the class clap the rhythm along with the oral prompts. (The beat remains steady without any pause; however, the rhythm follows the lyrics.) If you would like the guidance of a metronome, complete this step using Track Replay Track 7 Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star, and have the students repeat step 14, using other types of body percussion (e.g., snap their fingers, pat their thighs). ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES: The important thing is that students identify two beats per measure and that the body percussion pattern consists of an accent on beat one (Ta) and a weak beat on beat 2 (ta). There should be a discernable pattern with a clear repetition every two beats. 23

Twinkle, twinkle, little star, How I wonder what you are! When the blazing sun is gone, When there s nothing he shines upon, Then you show your little light, Twinkle, twinkle, through the night.
