1 CHORD AVAILABILITY Any songwriter, whether they are amateur or professional, is bound to get stuck sometimes in finding that elusive chord to use in their song. What many of them don t realize is the number of different chords available to them in whatever musical key that they re working with. Granted, a lot of more seasoned songwriters probably know the basic major and minor chords that are found in whatever key they re in, but may not be familiar with the some of the more color chords that can be created from those chords by adding other notes from that key to them. I decided to create a listing of ALL the different chords available in the 5 guitar friendly keys C, A, G, E and D originally for my own personal reference for future songs and I ve decided to share it here with my fellow SongRamp members. The following tables are the result of the research I conducted to find all of the chords in those 5 keys I mentioned. Above each table, I ve shown the Major Scale that that corresponds to the same Major Key to demonstrate how all the different chords in that key are constructed from all the different notes in the Major Scale. As you ll see, the number of different types of chords that can be constructed from all the notes of that particular major scale is amazing. These tables can be handy as a reference tool to songwriters who are looking for ways to spice up an otherwise boring chord progression. In each table, under the Major Scale, the first column shows all the chords that are available in the Key based on the same letter name as the Major Scale. In the next column are all the chords that can be constructed from the notes of that Major Scale built on the next note of the scale, and so on. NOTE: I ve used different abbreviations for different chord names Maj for Major (e.g. Cma7 = C Major 7) m for Minor dim for Diminished (e.g. Dm = D Minor) (e.g. Bdim = B Diminished) + for Augmented (e.g. G+ = G Augmented) / for add (e.g. C/9 = C add 9, Em7/11 = Em7 add 11) sus for suspended (e.g. Gsus4 = G suspended 4th, Csus2 = C suspended 2nd) - for flat (e.g. Bm7-5 = Bm7b5) Also, remember that the basic three note major chords are normally just written with their letter name (e.g. C = C Major, G = G Major, etc.) The same applies to Major 6th chords, which are normally referred to as just 6th chords (e.g. C6 = C Major 6, F6 = F Major 6, etc.) The chord tables begin on the next page.

Although there are different ways of playing any of these chords on the guitar, I have provided what I have found to be the most common (and easiest) way of playing the chords. If you would like to learn alternate ways of playing any of these chords, a good guitar chord dictionary (or encyclopedia) will be helpful. The internet is also a great resource as well. For example, if you wanted to see different ways of playing a C major 7th chord up and down the neck, you could do a Google search try C Major 7th chord, guitar, and go from there. The diagrams on the next few pages are provided by chord type and the diagrams are shown in alphabetical order. Because of the keys involved, not every alphabet letter will be used, as you will see. Just as an example, you won t find a B major 7th chord listed because none of the 5 keys represented contain that chord. MAJOR (Major, Major 6th, Major 7, Major 9, Major /9, Major 6/9, Sus 2, Sus 4) MINOR (Minor, Min 6, Min 7, Min 9, Min /9, Min 6/9, Min 7/11, Min 11, Diminished 7, Min 7-5 DOMINANT (7th, 7th sus4, 9th, 11, 13th)
