1 1 Labels: Getting Started Barcode Definitions Overview Barcode definitions contain information for different types of barcodes. You may skip this document if you are not printing barcodes, or if you are printing barcodes using hardware and/or software from a third party. Barcode definitions allow you to describe each type of barcode that you want to print, how it is to be printed, and the printer on which the barcode is to be produced. This information must be provided when other barcode hardware and/or software is not present to translate the data into barcodes. The ID assigned to a barcode definition is used in Setup / Labels / Custom formats to indicate that a specific data field should print as a barcode. This document explains how to set up barcode definitions. Defining a barcode definition Select Setup / Labels / Barcode definitions. 1. Barcode ID Enter the barcode ID. Press F1 to scan through the existing barcode definitions.

2 Labels: Getting Started - Barcode Definitions 2 When an existing barcode definition is displayed, press: F2 F3 F6 To print a test barcode (See the Testing a barcode section on page 5 for more information.) To delete this barcode definition To copy this definition (See the Copying an existing barcode definition section on page 4 for more information.) A barcode ID can consist of any eight alphanumeric characters. Barcode ID s that mean something are generally the easiest to use. For example, you might set up a barcode ID called UPC-A for a barcode definition that prints UPC-A barcodes, and one called CODE39 for a definition that prints Code 39 barcodes. WARNING: Don t delete a barcode definition if there are existing custom formats that use that definition. 2. Description Enter a description for the definition. 3. Barcode type Specify the number that corresponds to the barcode type for this definition. Descriptions of barcode types: See Barcode Types, in Printing Barcodes for more information. 4. Bar height If you specify a barcode type of Zip+4 Postnet, your entry in this field is ignored. Enter the height of the barcode, in tenths of an inch. A maximum of 20 (two inches) is allowed. 5. Bar width Enter the width (number of dots) to print in each narrow bar. A maximum width of 6 is allowed. Ratio This field appears only for barcode types Code 39, Extended Code 39, and Interleaved 2 of 5, and allows you to specify the ratio in thickness between the narrow and wide bars of the barcode.

3 Labels: Getting Started - Barcode Definitions 3 Select: 1 For wide bars two times thicker than narrow bars 2 For wide bars three times thicker than narrow bars 3 For wide bars two and a half times thicker than narrow bars, with the narrow bar twice the width specified in field 5 (Bar width) 6. Print spaces? Specify whether bars should be printed for trailing spaces by selecting Yes or No. 7. Print text? If you specified a barcode type of Zip+4 Postnet, this field defaults to No and may not be changed. Specify whether to print text below the barcode by selecting Yes or No. If you answer Yes, up to 30 characters of text are automatically formatted per industry standards for the barcode type specified. 8. Print checksum? For UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-JAN13, EAN-JAN8, Code 128, Code 93, Extended Code 93, and UCC-128 barcode types, this field defaults to Yes and may not be changed. For a Zip+4 Postnet barcode type, this field defaults to No and may not be changed. Specify whether to print the checksum character as a bar by selecting Yes or No. A checksum character is automatically generated for most barcode types. This character can be used to verify the barcode at the time it is scanned. Include in text? This field appears only if you answer Yes to both Print text? and Print checksum? Specify whether to include the checksum character in the text that prints below the barcode by selecting Yes or No. 9. Printer type Specify the number that corresponds to the printer that will be used to print this barcode. Number of passes This field appears only for printer types other than the HP Laserjet types (numbers 3, 4, 9, and 10). Enter the number of times, from 1 to 5, that the printer should overstrike the barcode to make a darker impression.

4 Labels: Getting Started - Barcode Definitions 4 Landscape? This field appears only for printer types HP Laserjet II 150 dpi and 350 dpi (numbers 3 and 4). Specify whether the barcode should print in landscape mode. In landscape mode, the barcode prints perpendicular to the bottom edge of the label. If you want text or other data to also print on the label in landscape mode, you must configure the printer for landscape mode prior to printing the label. This can be done using Pre-run print control codes in the custom format defined for the label. Custom formats: See Custom Formats for more information. 10. Printer CPI Specify the number of characters per inch, from 2 to 20, to use when printing text for this barcode. The setting you enter here will be used to print barcode text. The printer is returned to its previous CPI setting after the barcode prints. 11. Printer LPI Specify the numbers of lines per inch, either 6 or 8, to use when printing this barcode. The setting you enter here will be used to print barcode text. The printer is returned to its previous LPI setting after the barcode prints. Copying an existing barcode definition Press F6 when an existing barcode definition is displayed, to copy this barcode definition. Copy to barcode ID This field appears in a pop-up window when you press F6 to copy an existing barcode definition. Enter the ID of the barcode definition to create.

5 Labels: Getting Started - Barcode Definitions 5 Testing a barcode Press F2 when an existing barcode definition is displayed, to print a sample barcode on the specified printer. Number of characters Specify the number of characters to print in the test barcode. NOTE: This number must be valid for the barcode type specified in the definition, and cannot be greater than 30. (See Printing Barcodes for more information.) When labels are printed, you may send them to any defined printer. However, any compression codes associated with a printer are used when printing labels. You may specify any required non-compression codes for label printing in the Pre-run print control field, or you may define the same printer again and answer No to Comprs?. The characters used for formatting and printing the test barcode are dependent on the barcode type.
