All the formulations featured in this magazine meet the European Guidelines for UVA protection, which require that the UVAPF is minimum one third of the labelled SPF with a critical wavelength UVA measuring at least 370nm. Passing the critical wavelength test also ensures that these formulations meet the new FDA rule for broad spectrum sunscreen claims. The stability of these formulations has been carefully monitored and all the formulations have passed a three month stability test at 45 C, 40 C, 25 C, 5 C and room temperature, and a one month freeze thaw cycle test (-5/45 C). 3 Vital Statistics Sun Protection The global sun care market has made a speedy recovery from the economic downturn. Value growth increased to 7.4% in 2010 after dropping to 4.3% in Despite dwindling value growth in Western regions, there is still plenty of mileage left in the sector, with fresh innovations, greater awareness of the risks of sunbathing and growing demand from emerging regions all helping to boost the demand for sun care products. New product launches increased by 31% yr-on-yr for , with a domination of sun protection products accounting for 79% of the sun care launches (followed by after sun 15% and selftanning 6%). Highlights Western Europe represents 35% of global sun care sales. France and Italy hold the largest markets with 18.9% and 16.5% of sales respectively. The UK is a close third and sales rose 2.4% to account for 16.7% of Western Europe s sales. The fastest growing region within sun care in 2010 was Latin America which now represents 16.7% of global sun care sales. Brazil keeps driving the area s growth with 39.1% yr-on-yr and representing 83% of sales. In the rest of the world North America and Asia- Pacific continue to be dominant players that drive value growth in the sun care sector with market share s of 20.5% and 19.5% respectively. Within Asia-Pacific, South Korea, China and Japan are the biggest markets with shares at 34%, 29% and 27.5% respectively contributing to the region s 14.1% value growth yr-on-yr. Education Drives Efficacy Consumer demand for effective sun protection is being driven by increased awareness of the harmful effects of UV. This is thanks to ongoing commitment from governments and/or health charities across the globe to provide educational campaigns for the general public. In more recent years improved knowledge and education about the dangers of UVA (causing free radicals and visible signs of ageing) has lead to demand for UVA protection. There has been a huge amount of consumer confusion around the subject of Vitamin D which has proved challenging for the sun protection industry. Experts now agree that the average person has enough exposure in their daily routine to synthesise the required amount without having to adapt their behaviour. Higher and Higher Protection With increasing awareness of UV dangers, high SPF is becoming the norm. A recent report discovered that 70% of American consumers use products with SPF 30+. Despite this demand for protection, the consumer does not want to compromise on convenience or pleasant skin feel. Convenience Consumers want products that are easy to use, multifunctional and/or specialist. High SPF sun care products have to be light, non greasy and a sprayable format is particularly appreciated. In our last issue we saw a strong trend for segmented products, specialised for gender, ethnicities, skin types and ages. This trend prevails but, moreover, secondary benefits such as moisturising properties, anti-ageing, skin firming and protection for sun sensitive areas such as the scalp are now indispensable to the consumer. Beyond Sun Care The distinction between sun care and skin care markets is becoming less defined. UV protection is becoming an essential claim of most daily wear skin care products, usually with a SPF lower than in sun care products (between 10 and 30). As the sun care market merges further with skin care the greater the demand for aesthetic appeal will become. Sun Care is Everywhere Sun exposure is not limited to beach holidays. Exposure happens everywhere the sun is out; a city break, camping in the country or an outdoor event. Consumers want protection but also suitable aesthetics for everyday activities. More sun care products propose medium to high UV protection with light textures and high transparency, maintaining the convenience and comfort of a daily wear product. Formulation examples include oil free creams, sprays, gels and after sun protection products. Nature s Way Consumers tend to opt for green products for their perceived health benefits or their reduced environmental impact and seek products that have natural certification. We have seen a trend for the use of inorganic UV filters in recent years. Often referred to as Nature Identical minerals, inorganic UV filters are the most natural form of sunscreens currently available. Mineral sunscreens are frequently complimented by the use of botanicals or organic oils and are often also cold processable making them more environmentally friendly. 1
