TIRANA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT GATEWAY TO ALBANIA
2 3 Welcome to Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza. Situated about 20 kilometers from the capital, Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza is Albania s most important transport hub. It connects this South-eastern European country with Europe s major business centers and is supporting the development of tourism along Albania s 316-kilometer Mediterranean coastline. In 2006, 16 airlines flew from here to 30 destinations abroad. With passenger figures increasing by 15 percent last year, Tirana International is one of the fastest growing airports in Europe. This in itself is testimony to Albania s rapid economic development. the Airport Following comprehensive modernization and the construction of an impressive new passenger terminal, the Airport named after the Albanian nun Mother Teresa (Nënë Tereza) is now an up-to-date, customer-friendly, safe and secure civil aviation hub, a statement confirmed by international organizations and experienced airline companies. Since 23 April 2005, the Airport has been privately managed. Within the framework of a BOOT (Build, Own, Operate, Transfer) concession, a new operating company became responsible for running the Airport, with all the rights of an owner, and also for undertaking construction measures. At the end of the concession period, the Airport will be transferred back to the state.
4 5 Tirana International Airport SHPK (TIA, formerly Tirana Airport Partners) is responsible for the planning, financing and extensive modernization of the Airport and will remain in charge of operational business until about Tirana International Airport SHPK During this decisive period, the Airport management can rely on the support and knowhow of TIA s three strong partner owners: HOCHTIEF AirPort GmbH (HTA), one of the world s leading private airport managers and investors, with interests in five airports around the world, is the strategic investor providing the requisite operational and management expertise; Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG), a member of the KfW Banking Group and specialized in the financing of corporate and infrastructure investments in Europe, is contributing with financing experience; Albanian-American Enterprise Fund (AAEF), an investment company founded by the US administration to support the development of the private sector in Albania, is providing its financial expertise to TIA. In 2004, in the face of tough competition, this company won an international bidding procedure, whereupon the Albanian state awarded it the 20 year operating concession for Tirana International Airport. TIA has set itself the goal of running the country s only international airport in accordance with the highest standards of safety, security and service, offering new flight connections and rapidly expanding the facilities. In March 2007, with the opening of the new passenger terminal, the centerpiece of the modernization work was concluded. Prior to that, the road linking the Airport to the capital city was completed. In line with the development of passenger traffic, TIA expects to commence the next expansion stage in the near future. TIA offers Albania: A world-class airport that will give Tirana a distinctive identity in South-eastern Europe Best-practice management expertise and state-of-the-art technologies Stimulation of the regional economy by engaging predominantly local contractors and suppliers Access to Western European aviation and tourist markets Encouragement of the private sector by attracting further foreign investment into Albania HOCHTIEF AirPort GmbH DEG Deutsche Investitionsund Albanian-American (HTA) Entwicklungs- Enterprise Fund (AAEF) gesellschaft (DEG) 47% 31.7% 21.3% Tirana International Airport SHPK
6 7 The mission of Tirana International Airport is to provide Albania with a prestigious international aviation facility offering an efficient, safe and first-class service for passengers and airlines. For those visiting this country by air, the first and last impressions will be the capital s well-managed Airport. TIA Mission
8 9 By signing the concession agreement, TIA took on the obligation to organize the Airport in line with current requirements and to carry out major construction and conversion work. The punctual opening of the new passenger terminal in March 2007 represented the conclusion of the first phase of this transformation process. The tall, bright and spacious building, designed by the renowned Malaysian architect Hin Tan, is a symbol of Albania s new self-confidence. With its elegant lines, the modern terminal merges harmoniously with the mountainous backdrop of the surrounding countryside and offers an impressive panorama. The Airport is now the country s most aesthetically expansion and modernization pleasing and up-to-date infrastructural facility. The terminal, initially designed for one million passengers, can be extended in modular fashion to cope with swiftly growing passenger numbers without detracting from its striking architecture. The first extension phase is already being planned. Other important modernization measures have also been completed: a new cargo terminal with ancillary buildings, a new fence and perimeter road, as well as a two-lane seven-kilometer access road. During the period up to 2007, the new operating company TIA will invest approximately EUR 50 million in enlarging the Airport and increasing its passenger-handling capacity. At the same time, TIA has streamlined the organizational structure of the Airport. It now has state-of-the-art technology that conforms to international standards of safety and security and offers users a broad range of up-to-date services. In all air transport matters, TIA operates in accordance with the relevant EU stipulations and implements these promptly. The same is true of the strict EU regulations on environmental protection. In this respect, TIA serves as a role model for the rest of Albania.
10 11 What has now evolved into Tirana International Airport Between 1960 and 1978, following Albania s break with what was then the Soviet Union, the country became politically isolated. This naturally also impacted on the Airport, where operations became increasingly restricted. Between 1965 and 1974, some work was carried out to improve the Airport facilities. Further improvements followed in the period In the wake of general technological developments in civil aviation worldwide, these were necessary to enable the Airport to meet international requirements. As a result of the political changes in Eastern Europe in 1989 and 1990, contacts between Albanian government officials and Eastern and Western European countries increased substantially. Nënë Tereza was constructed between 1955 and 1957 and operated initially under the name Rinas Airport. It was served by the airlines Aeroflot, Jat, Malev, Tarom and Interflug but the number of regular flights was extremely small. For Albania, the period between 1992 and 2000 was one of great political and social transformation. This resulted in considerable growth in passenger numbers; more airlines started to use Rinas. Facing the need for further development of the Airport, Albania s Council of Ministers issued an invitation to international investors to undertake the construction of a new terminal and other facilities and also to assume responsibility for operations. An international bidding procedure was initiated. This was won history of the Airport SHPK) and on 23 April 2005, the new company took over the management of the Airport. by the consortium Tirana Airport Partners (now the management company Tirana International Airport Since then, the Airport has undergone its biggest transformation: all the facilities have been modernized and a new passenger terminal erected.

14 15 How to get to the Airport Tirana International Airport is located 25 kilometers north-west of Tirana, the Albanian capital city. It is easy to reach via the newly built Tirana Durrës Motorway, the four-lane dual carriageway that connects Albania s two main cities. The easiest way to get to TIA is by taxi. Taxi services are available in all Albanian cities and urban areas, with the main cities operating a call-service. The journey from Tirana to the Airport takes minutes depending on traffic and costs 2,500 Albanian Lek one way. Please note: We strongly recommend that passengers use only licensed taxis, which are yellow in color and have appropriate identifying signs. At the Airport, these park in front of the terminal. Rinas Express, a private company operates a daily 24-hour hourly bus service between the Airport and the National Museum in the centre of Tirana. The single fare is 200 Albanian Lek. Parking New parking spaces are available directly in front of the new passenger terminal. There are 250 covered spaces (120 Lek for first hour, up to 600 Lek for first day, and 500 Lek per day after that) and 210 uncovered parking spaces (100, 500 and 400 Lek, respectively); discounts are available for longer stay.
